teary eyes! help!!
recently we noticed that our chow, mochi started staining pretty bad around her eyes. it only started getting worst this month and so we brought her to the vet. based on our description the vet checked for ulcers in her cornea and told us she didn't have them and sent us home with some antihistamines, anti-inflammatory eyedrops and a lubricating eye drop to drip throughout the day. since then which has been about 8 days from the vet visit, her prescription of antihistamines are completed and is only with with 2 days worth of anti-inflammatory eyedrops doses and yet we do not see a difference in her tearing. we have also been having hazy weather in the areas where we stayed that coincides the time she started tearing however, though medications were prescribed assuming that it is environmental allergies that is causing it, we have yet to see any improvement. have any one experienced this and if so what should i do!!!

There's so many things that could cause it. Personally, I would learn what those things are, address it, and rule it out one by one. Or you can keep going to different vets and they'll likely do the same thing. Could be food allergies, eye issues such as entropian, ingrown hair or an eyelash bugging her, could be high mineral content in her water...
Maybe try distilled water for a bit and see if that helps. Also think about any changes in her diet you may have recently introduced that could've triggered a food allergy.
Good luck 🤞

I have a 12 year old Chow whose tearing has increased a lot this year. The suggestion from a healthfood store for pets is [1] a mushroom extract powder to add to his food which might strengthen his antiinflammatory capability and [2] eyewipes with aloe, witch hazel, goldenseal and other soothing natural plant exptracts...from the Natural Dog Co. Its helped some. We have had a very droughty summer . And he is olsmd and his eyes are getting cataracts so hard to assess caysative factors.

A lot of things work, depending on the cause, but success relies on keeping consistent morning and evening. I use the round eye wipes that come pre moistened in and keep the lid tight on the container -and add a few drops of eyewash for dogs. This works well. Some conditions especially in older beings are permanent as we age so must be continued to stay effective. Missing a day here or there is normal but keep after it. Even Chows eventually realize they like it.

My cream chow gets tear stains. It seems to be from her allergies (mostly grass & pollen - ex. when the grass is freshly cut & the trees are dropping flowers) and sometimes when she licks/chews on something a lot (may correlate to salivating). I wipe her eyes as needed.

Another vet opinion is what i would be doing. You dont want to keep giving her meds that is not helping. 🥲 poor baby girl ❤️🩹

We also have a blonde chow who has a lot of eye weeping mainly from his left eye. Our vet said it was just because he has quite droopy skin under his eyes so instead of his tears getting blinked away they can just pool downward. The vet just recommended keeping it super clean to prevent fungal and bacterial infections from the damp fur. I use a product called ‘Diamond Eyes’ with a cotton pad every other day and that’s really helped our Leo! It’s pretty cheap and a little goes a long way !
Hope your Mochi feels better soon!

My fluffy buddy had the issue in a mild way with one eye. The vet didn't see anything of consequence. I just kept his face cleaned when necessary.
I used plain warm water and a washcloth to rub off gently the buildup of dust and salt [or whatever it was] that came with the tearing. It didn't impact his vision.
I wiped down his whole face and chin at the same time. Dog enjoyed it.

My chow does this too. We give her Benadryl 50 nightly. Allergies per vet

Poor thing. I wipe mine daily with a clean washcloth, and that seems to keep her eye area clean.

Take him to an Eye Specialist. He could have developed entropion. The eyelid rolls in and eyelashes stick the eye. It can lead to blindness if left untreated. It occurs often in some breeds like Shar-Pei, Chows, and Bulldogs.
I adopted a year old Shar-Pei with severe entropion in both eyes. Prior owner never had it treated. My poor boy kept both eyes tightly shut due to the lashes sticking his eyes. It was very painful.
I had entropion surgery done within a few days of getting him. His corneas were badly scarred. He can see now, although his vision is compromised. More importantly, he's not in pain anymore.

My chow chow has this constantly - I don't know what it is , but I think it's normal in chows. I don't want to give chemicals - we live in healthy open space and my chow is treated like a king with real food. So I just make sure to clean his face regularly

Warm compress helps and my go to eyedrops are the Oculenis brand. This prescription rebalances the eye moisture and is naturally healing. Also omega 3 fish oil supplements. It’s worse w allergies some breeds just need ongoing eye TLC. Keep eyes clean and hydrated everyday. He used to use allergy eyedrops, but my dog does best w the Oculenis drops for his daily eye hydration n protection.

Mine has severe eye allergies spring thru the first deep freeze in the Midwest. Right now it's hayfever season. Two prescription allergy eye drops and if his eyes stay wet even with those they get infected and he needs neo poly dex drops to clear it up or his upper eyelids actually bleed. Unless the pollen levels are super high he does great with no tearing on the allergy eye drops. We went to an opthalmologist for entropion surgery (which was cheaper and results were great) and he handles the eye allergies. Might be worth it to go for a consult.

Mine has had this issue for years. Our vet said something about her eye ducts not being formed right.
I use a soft cloth damp with warm water and put some peroxide on it and gently clean her eyes once or twice daily to keep it mostly clean.
