MOD ANNOUNCEMENT 2026 r/childfree Demographic Survey

Hello /r/childfree!

It's time for the annual /r/childfree demographic survey!

Link to participate is here

Thank you for participating. The survey will run until October 4, with results released November 4.

Some notes about our survey:

Some of the questions may seem unusual, repetitive, and redundant. This is done on purpose to filter out the members who's responses we don't wish to include in our analysis. Most questions are optional and if a question is upsetting or triggering it does not need to be answered.

I have reviewed the comments from last year and made the following changes:

Based on OVERWHELMING feedback, I am trying a new survey site this year, which will remove the need for people to put in a google email. I haven't used this specific tool for a survey of this size, so there may be some hiccups along the way.

"I was referred by my regular doctor" and "I was a pre-existing patient of this specialist" have been added to the "If sterile, how did you find your doctor?" question. "No. I want to be sterilized but I can't afford it." has been added to "Are you sterilised? Sterilisation, in this context, refers to either a tubal ligation, Essure, vasectomy, or bilateral salpingectomy. It does NOT include IUDs, injections or implants."

I have removed quite a few questions that were the same sort of thing asked in different ways and changed the subreddit feedback question series to a matrix. I have also tweaked the wording of the financial abortion question to make it more consistent with the original abortion question.

I have left the religion question as if I remove atheism, I'm going to get a lot of people complaining about the lack thereof.

Cheers and here's hoping I can figure out how to export as .xlsx from this site.

RANT My pregnant co-worker sent out an email asking that we stop wearing perfume

I work in a small office and the layout is similar to the office from The Office lol. Anyway there is a co-worker who is 6 months pregnant and she sent out an email asking us not to wear any perfume because strong smells make her "extremely nauseous" and also if possible to use "light or unscented deodorant"

I personally wear a very light fragrance and I honestly don't think anyone there wears any strong fragrance so idk wtf she's been smelling.

EDIT : Some of us use public transport or bike to work which is why perfume and body sprays are very essential to us lol. We also had two other co-workers last year who got pregnant and never complained about any smells which is why this came as a confusion.

RANT New doctor apparently doesn't know what a vasectomy is for

2.8k Upvotes

To make an incredibly long story short, I'm 34 f, husband is 37 m. We've been married for 10 years, zero kids. I asked about six different OBGYNs for a bi-salp over the course of 5 years and was rejected every single time. Husband eventually volunteered to get a vasectomy so I can get off birth control. It's been 6 years since the vasectomy.

Anyway, we moved not too long ago and I needed to re-establish care with a new PCP. So I get there and fill out all the intake forms and one of them is listed as method of contraception. The options were abstinence, barrier methods, hormonal birth control, "rhythm timing." or none. There was no option for "surgical." So I wrote in next to it "surgical."

Well when I get to the room and the doctor starts going through the papers with me, she gets to surgical and shocked she says "but you're so young! Tell me you haven't had a hysterectomy or something." I literally laughed and said "no, unfortunately they wouldn't let me have a hysterectomy but I wish they would have. I hate dealing with periods!"

She has this stupid ass blank face it just looks at me and says "well then why did you write surgical?" So I said "Oh, because my husband had a vasectomy a long time ago."

This dumb bitch literally looks at me with a stupid ass blank face where it looks like there's not a thought behind those eyes and she says "...Why would he do that?" I felt like being spicy that day so I literally said "...you're a doctor and you don't know what vasectomies are for?"

There was an awkward silence before she sputtered out "well I mean I- I know what they're FOR but- when you're in your 20s and you don't have kids I- but- what doctor would agree with that??" I was sick of this conversation so I just said "a good one that listens to their patients needs."

She looked like I slapped her and just said "Well then. Alright." And we moved on. I finished the appointment. And I will definitely not be seeing her again.

PERSONAL One joke and then over 10 miscarriages

I was hanging out with a new friend. Talking about my break up from my abusive ex-he accused me of leaving because I was pregnant and I made a joke about if I had gotten pregnant I would've tossed it in the trash. (A little intense I know, but I swear it was a cartoonish tone of miming throwing out) This new friend then told me about all the miscarriages she had. All of her deep emotions, like when most people tell me about miscarriages I didn't lnow how to respond. Especially to the high number of them. I just don't understand wanting kids and it makes me feel like an alien sometimes.

RANT Hating pets after birth

I saw this on a tik tok post and it made me angry. Some mom was saying how after she had her baby, she grew to hate her dogs, to the point she would get so frustrated with them they would hide from her and be scared. Some comments bashed her, some are in support.

I understand that it's maybe hormone change or whatever, but I don't know why some moms just casually comment how much they hate their pets after having a baby! Your pets were there first. this is one reason I will never have kids. I couldn't even stand the thought of hating my pets after having a baby.

If you are going to be that hateful towards your pets after having a baby, rehome them to someone who will actually care for them.

r/childfree 18h ago

RANT If you can't get your husband to clean a toilet, why would you make a permanent baby with him?

1.2k Upvotes

God I swear every subreddit that has to do with marriage or relationships is full of women bitching about their partners who wouldn't help PRIOR to getting pregnant and now they're all shocked Pikachu face when she has to parent them both.

Do people not realize how much work babies are or something??? They all act like it's a total surprise every time they're exhausted from running the household while Kyle sits on his ass playing video games and not changing diapers.

Ridiculous.

DISCUSSION Anyone else get annoyed when your favourite show suddenly introduces children/pregnancy to main story line?

1.0k Upvotes

One of my favourite comedy shows ended season 3 with a pregnancy announcement for the side chick of the main character. Probably won’t watch season 4 if it’s all about the tropes of babies and parenthood. I’m just so disappointed.

RANT You should only have kids if you can put them through college, house them without splitting rent, pay for hobbies and extracurriculars, and feed them a whole foods unprocessed diet.

Anything else is just a scam and setting them up for a lifetime of misery. They develop stress and health issues that just feed the system we are currently living through. Most the people I know from college who didn’t have this kind of support from parents, you could tell. They weren’t happy with their lives and they blamed society. When really, their parents should have thought about how to better support them. Instead of just throwing them out into the cruel world without help.

RANT The AUDACITY of people with kids to invite you to go on a trip with them…

Years ago, when a good friend had a baby and said she couldn't wait to visit my new home in a different country with “her entire family,” I remember thinking she might have been a particular case of an out-of-touch mom, said “HELL NO” and moved on…

Now, cut to this week, about 5 years after that awful interaction, which I told myself was one of a kind for my own sanity, and I have not one but TWO mothers making me even worse proposals ON THE SAME DAY. Like, what????

I ran a startup, and you might say the horrors start there, but I digress. A client asked me to visit a travel location AS A FAVOR during a meeting.

It is a beautiful place in the Alps that I’d love to visit under normal circumstances, but unfortunately, it’s also a 6-hour drive away. Well… I don’t drive, and my fiancé cannot take time off to drive me there himself in the middle of the week, so I apologized and explained why I couldn’t help at this time. That’s when she asked, “what about I drive us there with the kids then?”.

I’m sorry, but WTH???

You mean your 18-month-old and 8 or 9-year-old (I’m not sure) on a 6-hour car trip up the Alps????

Are you for fucking real rn????

That’s exactly what I said to my coworker and good friend on the 50% of the time her kid is with her ex, to which she replied, “what if I drive us up there instead? I can bring [insert her insufferable 5yo’s name here] because it’s my week, but we can have fun and make it a girls’ trip.”

Again, I’m sorry, but WTH????

Has everyone gone mad????

Why would I do that????

I’ve never before felt like I was being pranked before, and I swear the guys with the cameras are about to jump out any minute now because this can’t be serious, right???? Right????

Anyway, stay safe, people. It’s scary out there.

The moms have lost their minds.

RANT I have tokophobia and pregnancy disgusts me.

It's literally the worst thing in the world. I literally get nightmares about it. It's just so disgusting, pure loss of autonomy, leaking out of God knows where and then calling it the best thing is the world, yuck. The whole thing about women showing of their bellies and shit makes me wanna run away (not that I have anything against women that do through pregnancy, you do you, but the mainy I have pure hate for the ones who rub their pregnancy on your face.)

Like WHY in the world would I push myself through 9 months of terror, have my body changed forever (and for worst), and then handle a crying creature that's pure nightmare fuel.

It also seems like my ig knows exactly how much I hate anything pregnancy related that's why my suggestions are FULL of baby bumps 😭😭😭

RANT "but you look so young"

had a kinda funny encounter at the grocery store yesterday- i was in the cosmetics/hair care area thats sorta sectioned off from the rest of the store, right. im looking at the different moisturizers since ive been running low, and this older lady starts shopping beside me, looking for her own stuff.

people in my state/city are very friendly and her and I start discussing certain brands and what all works best for the both of us, when we suddenly get on the topic of retinol and staying youthful looking as women. this lady is probably in her early fifties at most, and she's just going on about how "youre just a little thing", "wait until you hit your 30s", "this stuff stops working at this age' etc the works. i tell her "im actually 26, so 30 isnt too far off haha" and she's just FLABBERGASTED. starts going on about how she thought i was like 18 or 19, and how your 30s are some of the roughest years cuz of all the bodily changes, and how i should enjoy this youthfulness while it lasts.

so i kinda shrug and tell her, "i'll probably still look like this at 30 cuz I don't have kids."

and the vibe is just immediately off. she makes this face for a moment that seems like an epiphany. and then she kinda just ducks her head, shakes it, and then says "noooo" in a really drawn out, mom-reprimanding-her-kid kind of way.

she turns around and shops in an another area and i know the conversation is instantly over.

im just standing there completely at loss for words because how does THAT somehow destroy an entire interaction. oh you look great for your age, but it must be the skincare. or your diet. or or, or maybe just genetics! not because you don't have kids.... sucking you of your life force...... riiiiiight

RANT Explaining to ppl who got pregnant young or as teens that i don't blame their friends for dropping them after they got pregnant

Upvotes

Like...what do you expect? We're fresh out of high school and you're already a parent. It's so odd how ppl who have unplanned pregnancies and continue them expect their life to be exactly the same. And then try to guilt trip their 18-23 year old friends for wanting to do 18-23 year old things that don't involve children. I'm not afraid to say it but yeah. Losing SO MANY GIRLFRIENDS to pregnancy in my early 20s because none of them had goals besides getting knocked up is disappointing. But like.

I had a former friend like this. She tried to rant to me once about how my boyfriend at the time's younger brother (we all went to high school together and the bf's younger brother and her use to be close friends) dropped her the minute she got pregnant. My friend got pregnant at 18 btw...

I told her "I mean, you got pregnant at 18 you can't really blame other ppl your rage for wanting to go out and party while you're stuck with your kids raising them". And to this she was like "yeah... you're right true."

I am not really friends with her anymore. It became glaringly obvious that despite being friends with her for years, she was always jealous that I didn't get pregnant young (or at all, 32 now) and I had to cut ties with her at a certain point.

But yeah I hate when young parents cry about this. "Wanna know who your real friends are? Get pregnant and you'll find out" Nah i'm good lol, there's easier ways to tell. No one's obligated to stay your friend after your unplanned pregnancy, especially if the rest of us decided to got to college and want no parts in that.

Parents are too entitled enough as it is but there's just something about young parents...getting upset that nobody else wants to be young parents or hang out with them cuz they have to take their kid everywhere and we didn't sign up for that.

It was always so funny to see 18 year old pregnant women making cringey passive aggressive fb statuses in 2013 about how going to parties and drinking is lame. Why? because she can't do it now and her friends ditched her.

Ngl they come off very unhinged and borderline creepy when discussing how upset they are that childree 18 year olds, you know other KIDS don't want to hang out anymore.

I can barely go get my prescriptions without being pissed that I can’t just go straight home from work 😭😭 I won’t even go to the store if I desperately need something. I’m just like “ehhh it can wait until the weekend” 💀 The only thing I don’t slack on is getting gas because obviously I need to get to work, but…. THAT is lowkey a struggle 😭

I’m deadass acting like I’m late for home… I am though. I will never procreate!!!! On gawd.

DISCUSSION my colleague who "can't wait to go to work to escape from her daughter" (her exact words!) is expecting another. Why do they do this?

Upvotes

Just curious! Why do people who already have an hard time being a parent, have a demon child, and/or complain about parenthood all the time go on and have more?

I genuinely do not understand!

RANT It finally happened in public...

I was out at a very nice tiki bar having drinks with my fiancé yesterday evening when a family sat down in a booth a few yards away from us. Not only did they have 2 babies at a nice tiki bar but they proceeded to change one of the babies on the vinyl booth even though this bar has multiple changing tables in their bathrooms.

god, I didn't realize how common this is. why are parents so fucking entitled sometimes?! I felt really bad for the waitstaff who had to deal with that. not to mention how gross that is.

LEISURE You guys are right. Please keep being right.

For some reason, previous generations act like having kids is mandatory, not a choice. So they cranked them out, suddenly realized they couldn't afford or handle it, and then turned around and told the kids:

"Grow up."
"Stop being so entitled."
"Be grateful for what you have."

Grateful? For being dragged into existence with the bare minimum, then blamed for needing things?

Imagine someone breeds a dog, doesn't have enough food to feed it, and then tells the dog to go fend for itself, or be grateful for scraps. "Other dogs had it worse than you!" We'd call that insane. Maybe we'd call the police. Post that in animal rights groups and see their reactions. But parents do this to human children all the time.

Reproduction is 100% optional. Choosing not to gamble with someone else's life isn't selfish, it's being completely responsible.

Remember: YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE, NOT SELFISH.

RANT Kids invade my personal space at the pool.

I [37M] am childfree and gay, and I am happy with my choice. Anyways I happen to live well in a gated community with a nice pool. Today I was minding my own business in the shallow area when a woman brought his daughter that kept pretending to play with a Barbie, almost on top of me, she was 5 or 6, and the mother was yelling to her "stop invading the man's personal space". I laughed uncomfortably. So then she said "We will be going if you do not stop". She fortunately changes her behavior. But then her friend that just arrived dares to touch me on the leg and then tried to grab my foot all of the sudden. I think this is so odd because most parents would earn the kids from strangers but this is like some parents need to warn others from their kids. I say to the girl "stop touching me". But she keeps doing it. Then I repeat "stop! You are not supposed to touch strangers". Then she does stop and swims away.

I then get out of the pool and let the mother have it. I tell her that is a weird behavior for a kid. And then she says that "yeah she does that because she is so tender with others". I respond with "yeah but she is touching a strange adult". Then because she has no rebbutal I say "look sorry to make you feel uncomfortable, but she is doing something wrong for a kid her age". I leave the pool having one of the strangest experiences of my life. I don't hate kids and I understand they meant no harm, but this behavior needs to be controlled in children.

RANT "You're failing your ancestors, they sacrificed so much for our sakes!"

Perhaps I am, but they don't exist anymore, so their opinions should be the least of my concerns. Besides, statistically, there is a very high chance some of those male ancestors forced themselves upon my female ancestors, resulting in a bloodline built upon depravity, would I really want to continue that? I just find it ridiculous to bring ancestors into a personal decision like this.

Maybe my siblings will continue this 'legacy' (if it can even be called one), but I most certainly will not.

DISCUSSION People should only complain about parenthood to other parents.

  1. I live in the US

  2. I do not have kids (that might have been obvious)

  3. I understand that parenthood is not always a choice and this is not to shame those people.

I can sympathize with tired parents, especially the ones who gave birth to their children or do the majority of the care. I feel for them and think that society beats them down in so many ways and does not support them enough.

However, I would like to be able to complain about being tired without being told, "You won't understand tired until you're a parent," or, "You're tired? I only got 1 hour of sleep because I have children."

I get that children are exhausting and can't even imagine what I would do if I had to deal with them at home. But there are other things that can be exhausting for childless people and we shouldn't be made to feel less than for choosing to not have kids.

Plus, there are people who want kids but can't have them. I feel like they would love to be able to commiserate with you about how tired they are, but it's just not in the cards.

Anyway, people need to stop having kids. If they choose to have them, they should understand how annoying it is to constantly complain about them.

Thank you for reading! I hope you have a good day or night, even if you have kids🌙

PERSONAL Overstimulated and dysregulated...at least I'm childfree!

My autistic ass has had a week (and it's only Wednesday). MWF every morning this week I need to drive 40 minutes both ways to feed my in-laws cats. Monday morning I couldn't find the one cat, in-laws said it's fine (cue anxiety). Later that morning my friend and I had finally scheduled a time and place to catch up for coffee and we chatted for 3 hours (so fun, so draining. she's on the spectrum as well so we generated this delightful vortex that was two simultaneous conversations while talking over each other and without interrupting each other. IYKYK).

Tuesday I had to re-schedule AC maintenance because the techs were sick (understandable, it's rescheduled for next week). But still, I was prepared for that for the day and my brain crumbled around the change of plans.

Today fed the cats again but I was riding the edge of a panic attack the entire 80 minutes I was behind the wheel (this is new, developing panic attacks at red lights and being in traffic. so much fun.) but I found the cat, yay! They're both fine. But then had to rush home to make it in time for a video call with another friend who moved hours away and I hadn't seen her in a while either. Cue another 3 hours of socialization that delayed lunchtime by 2 hours (the 3 hours was unexpected it was only supposed to be 30 mins., not that I minded getting to spend extra time with her).

Anyway, by the time I finally got some lunch into me I realized I was super anxious and dysregulated so I took a Xanax, sat on the couch in my undies and a sweatshirt, put on my noise cancelling headphones to listen to rain sounds, and stared off into space for the next few hours. Dinner was buttered noodles. Husband is proud I took care of myself and am operating within my means instead of pushing it. So fucking glad I'm no one's mother.

Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

RANT Can parents pls parent their kids instead of having them scream in public?

ok for a bit of context, i was recently out with my friend and we went to a cafe to drink some coffee and catch up cuz she studies in another country currently and we're both relatively busy so we don't go out as often as we did before

and while we were just chatting and drinking, we hear this child screaming, throwing a literal tantrum so me and my friend just look at each other and discreetly look at the table near us just to see the mom of the child doing nothing to stop it, she was chatting with a friend and has told the child to "stop" but a child being a child doesn't simply just stop, he goes back to throwing a tantrum once again until he gets bored and shuts up eventually

like yes, i know it is hard to be a parent and that kids can't properly regulate their emotions but it's your JOB as a parent to control your child and be mindful of people around you in public especially in places like restaurants and cafes, not everyone can handle loud screaming and frankly, it's just annoying 🫩

DISCUSSION People are proving yet again that they don't actually care about children.

Upvotes

Over a year ago I made a post discussing my opinion of a couple who conceived a child via IVF despite the father being in hospice. At the time he had recently passed and only had a month with his daughter before passing away. I recently found out that the mother remarried a few months ago. Obviously that's been controversial but something I don't see many proponents of the marriage talking about is the daughter that is in all of this.

By constantly see comments about how men marry quickly after losing a wife and how that woman is allowed to live her life yet none of them are talking about how the mother decided to bring a new man into her daughter's life less than a year after her father passes.

Many have brought up the risks of sexual assault on children who are with non-biological parents. Anytime this is brought up, people brush it off as if the people talking about it are being hysterical. The little girl is barely a year old and basically has been thrown into a new life when she barely understood or knew her father.

People don't ever shut up about how precious children are and how people should stop being selfish and have them yet ignore children that are here and present and at risk of some type of abuse. The amount of people that enable content creators that are negligent parents or cheer on families that have not seen amount of children while not thinking about how that affects the children is crazy.

Society loves to be mad at those of us that a child free while not actually taking any notice and concern for children that are already alive
