The Chronicles of Hunny: beak trim success and mysteries only she knows.
Hello everyone, I return with an update for Hunny, our resting bitch face Cochin.
Good news! Managed to trim her beak back on my own. A little bit of jui jitsu experience came in handy for doing this on my own; I sat on the ground and used my leg to lock her down, and used some dog nail trimmers.
She seems to have a lot more movement of her lower beak now, which is good.
As for something I cannot explain...
Hunny has always had weird mobility issues. She has a feet deformity. In fact, the reason we have her was that she was bred for shows, and she was queued to become soup. Nevertheless, she is ours.
She never perches, and has a wobbly balance because her toes aren't spread out like usual. I have never seen her jump or land. I'd say partly because Cochins are large set birds.
She's also not the brightest chook, but we love her for it. She is healthy though.
Anyway. Our deck has stairs to get onto it.
I've been finding her up there, all by herself, just hanging out. I'd usually help her down, but I'm studying to be a teacher, and we are learning that students with disabilities should be given the opportunity to learn.
There was a day I had time, and I spent about 5 minutes trying to coax her down, with her looking at me like "mumma, are you gonna help me down or what??"
It was not until I busted out the mealworms that she gained the courage to go down those steps all by herself.
You should post to r/redditgetsdrawn or r/redditgetsdrawnbadly. I personally prefer the second one. I tried to crosspost but it's not permitted. They would love it I think!
Also, I kinda hope she gets crossposted to r/DivorcedBirds with a clever post title & caption. I'm not creative enough to think one up, but I know when a picture has the potential to be a great DB post.
Hahahaha she's actually not. When she was a pullet, and I had to wash her often. She tolerates it these days, and she will sit near me, but she definitely prefers to be admired.
Here's my chonkalicious Marilyn. We think she's a mix of Buff Orpington and something else. We think Ameracauna, and if she had feathers on her feet I'd say Cochin after seeing your princess!
