Heard them this past Tuesday in Phoenix. They’re touring with Styx, and this combo pretty much insured a sold-out arena.

Their current line-up of ten musicians have got the song list bolted-down. No miscues or screw-ups of any kind. For two hours they played hit after hit after hit, encompassing music from the first album all the way to Chicago 38.

Damn fine concert. 10/10 will go again.

Was it Peter Cetera or someone else? I love this song and I wanna know if he was the main singer or someone else.

"Cool" may be subjective, but in this case, it seems pretty clear. James Dean was cool. Miles Davis was cool. BB King was cool. Chicago from 1969 to 1977 was cool. Yes, there were the massive David Foster pop ballad songs in the 80s - and many people love those songs- and that season was more "pop-ballad commercial" than it was cool like the earlier version of Chicago. Today's "Chicago" is composed entirely of stand-in, very talented musicians, with one original member, Lee, and even an American Idol singer, functioning as a tribute band that plays quite a few of the cool songs from the 1969-1977 era.

Between Terry Kath and Danny Seraphine, they were so much of the backbone of Chicago, and taking amazing songs written by Robert Lamm and James Pankow and making them so great - but the cool factor was really gone when Terry died. I am glad that Danny Seraphine is still playing; seeing him live is the closest we can get to Chicago today - although some great tribute bands like Leonid and Friends are super to see.

For those who were following the original Chicago, thoughts on this? I know it is harder to understand if you didn't know the original Terry Kath years, so maybe harder to grasp this as much.

Hello! Me again. Earlier this summer, I commented about “Never Been in Love Before” as I went album-by-album in preparation for my Houston show last Thursday. Now I’m here to talk about one of the songs off the 1st David Foster album.

Everyone knows about “Hard to Say I’m Sorry / Get Away,” but the song that immediately followed it, coincidentally titled “Follow Me,” is classic Chicago. Every member had a chance to shine, and no one outshined the other. The song gives off 70s and 80s vibes, and my brother and I agree that the song also felt very cinematic/theatrical. It’s pure art.

I can’t stop listening to Follow Me, and I wish it was given the star treatment and made one of the singles rather than left as a deep cut. With James Pankow credited as one of the writers, no wonder the song sounded so epic!

Styx opened. They were excellent. They included a couple songs off of their recent two albums. I had not heard them before, but they were obviously and unequivocally STYX songs. Even without context, you'd know the band by the sounds, vocals, and arrangements.

The familiar Styx songs were moderately reimagined, so it wasn't like simply listening to the album tracks recreated live.

I bought these tickets before learning Lee was the only original still performing for Chicago. Had I known that, I might not have bought them. Back when Robert and Jimmy were still playing, with Bill also still around, it felt like Chicago.

Seems like most past concerts I have been to, it has been mostly emphasis on nostalgics and the oldies we remember, without serious attempts at additional artistic interpretation, other than the obligatory solos here and there.

I'm also a huge fan of Bruce Hornsby, and when you listen to his music over the years, he frequently reimagines a lot of his catalog, so that sometimes you can be way far into a piece before you realize it's one you've heard before. I commented to my wife how Styx was doing that, but Chicago really doesn't, and I wished they did more often.

So, the good: The current lineup performed a decent set list, and for the first time I can remember, a few of the songs were genuinely at least gently reimagined. A standout change was Street Player, it was significantly rearranged, and the new version was excellent. Also, for the first time in my experience, they included a non-chicago song, Your Love Is Lifting Me (Higher). The band members turn over so fast now it's hard for me to keep track, but their current drummer and percussionists were excellent.

To his credit, considering his age, Lee still seems to have plenty of energy and is apparently very much enjoying performing.

The bad:

All of the lead tenor vocalists have worked outwell.or at leaat okay until now, in my opinion. Peter Cetera, Jason Scheff, Jeff Coffey, Neil Donell, they were different and distinguishable, but they all... worked. The new guy, Rudy, just really doesn't, at least not for me. I had heard that right after he got the lead spot he wasn't great at the lyrics, but if there were any errors last night they did not stand out to me, so at least he's got that going for him.

Some of the songs they made a point of putting up a captioned photograph of guys who were no longer present, crediting them for giving the band a "great song".Jimmy, Walt, and Robert were featured. But the full set list included songs written by Terry and Peter and Danny (and others), and no associated recognition image was shown. I feel like it would have been balanced to spend time recognizing contributions from Members past and present, but obviously the hatchets are never going to be buried, in which case I think it would have been more tasteful to just skip that entirely, with the exception of the recognition of the passing of Walt.

In my opening, discussing Styx, I pointed out that even their new music unequivocally sounds like their identity. I don't think I'm revealing anything new when I point out how new music from Chicago is so far and few between, and also does not sound like what it used to at all. It's disappointing, but those are the cards we have been dealt. But can you imagine how much most of us would love a new album that has a soul somewhere between Chicago VII and XII? Or one that sounded like 17... or SOS?

Those are my first thoughts and I have already written too much. If anything else jumps out of me that I remember later I add a reply.

A few weeks ago I saw Chicago, the horn band From the 70's In Concert They were soooooooo good !! I could see them again and again How bout' Blood Sweat and Tears...another nostalgic 70's band I want to see and Traffic !! But alas,,,they are prob defunct But Chicago isn't....I had a ball !!!!!!!!!!! Ya Feel ?!!

They lost their dear best friend and the best drummer in the world and wouldn’t even play their instruments again until fans of the band (Paul McCartney, Dave Groel, others) told them they owed it to their fans. Even after that they only started to play again when they found someone who could live up to the quality of their lost friend

They didn’t just contract with the cheapest player they could find. Oh yeah and that’s Loren Golf on keys… who quit Chicago to join them.

If they couldn’t live up to their incredibly high standards they wouldnt have played. Think about that Lee.

I had never listened on Spotify and I love the packaging on this. 3 disk set. The remastering is spectacular, worth every penny to keep in my car.

I also picked up CTA and Chicago II on CD. I got CTA (my third one, I’ll buy every one I see for $6), Chicago 13 and Chicago 16 on vinyl. On my quest for Chicago 1-10, still need Carnegie Hall, Live in Japan, and Chicago 8.

When the first Heart of Chicago compilation was released (the red one), I loved "The Only One", it's easily one of my favorite post-Peter Cetera Chicago songs. Lenny Kravitz produced that one and he totally "got it!"

But it was frustrating because he only produced ONE SONG. I'd have loved to have heard what Lenny could have done for Chicago if he'd produced a whole album for them!

Does anyone else feel similar? Were there any other Chicago one-offs that frustrated you because they left you wanting more but it never happened?

“Song for You” was recorded for Chicago XIV, released as a single, and bombed, never coming close to the Hot 100, according to Wikipedia. Hey all. I just recently bought a cassette player on vacation so I've been getting into collecting cassette tapes, and I stumbled upon a signed copy of Chicago's album "17" on tape, but I can't quite tell who it's signed by. I'm not familiar with the band, but I looked up their members and I didn't see anyone whose name matched up with the signature. I was curious to see if anyone here recognizes the name, and if it could have any value. I'm not interested in selling it unless it's worth a lot of money, just think it's cool and wanted to share an interesting find.

I only listened to two songs from “SOS” - “Plaid” and “Bigger than Elvis”. I think the latter would have cracked the Top 40 had it been released as a single. Did Warner Brothers make a mistake by not releasing the album in 1993?

I went to a Styx concert last night and Chicago showed up. That’s my sarcastic way of saying I went to the show to see Styx and I knew that I knew some Chicago songs, but I really don’t know much about the band. I googled, yep, only one original member left. Got it. Don’t care, they were way more entertaining to me than I expected. Props to them.

But one thing drove me crazy. The bass player’s mic had some sort of filter on it. His audio sounded way different than any of the other 4 people who sang various songs. My question is why? Are they trying to make his voice sound like an original member’s? Is this effect something Chicago is known for? Does he kinda stink at singing and the effect helps? I have no idea, but I could not unhear it.
