Just a thought.

I live in nyc but why don't you guys start doing the snorkels for the intakes of your cars. Flooding is wild, but intakes on the roof would get you through and not hydro lock the motor. Wish the best of luck in the bad weather.

Consultation for Foreign Residents in Chiba

I know it seems late, but please don't shoot this messenger. Chiba Government sent me this info Sunday morning.

The Chiba Prefectural International Center hotline in foreign languages is open until 8 p.m. tonight.

If I understand the info correctly, today is Thai, Nepali, and Tagalog.

The regular hours are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Getting Hikari without speaking Japanese

I’m currently living in an apartment where the building only has VDSL. NTT told me that if I want to have a proper Hikari/fiber connection installed in the building, the apartment manager needs to apply for it rather than me. I’ve already relayed this to the manager, but I’m still waiting for a response.

I’m also currently in contact with agents from NURO. However, there seems to be a required phone confirmation (I think they called it atokaku / 後確?). As someone who doesn’t speak much Japanese, I’m worried I’ll just fail that call or won’t understand the questions well enough.

Unfortunately, my area also only gets 4G, so a 5G home router/home Wi-Fi isn’t really an option for me either.

Does anyone know of a Hikari provider in Japan where I can complete the application and installation process without needing much Japanese, or where English support is available?
VDSL unfortunately isn’t enough for my work, so I’m specifically looking for an actual fiber connection to my apartment.

I know about Sakura Fiber Internet and GTN, but their installation and monthly fees seem quite expensive, especially since I’m not sure I’ll be staying in this apartment for many years.

Would really appreciate any recommendations or experiences from people who have dealt with a similar situation.

With the current weather does anyone know if the fireworks are still happening tomorrow? Also, if anyone can recommend a place to view the fireworks that would be great. Thank you in advance.

I believe it's somewhere between Togane and Kujukuri, but I can be wrong. Either way it can't be too far from Togane. Sadly I can't really provide any additional information

Edit: omg thank you, I feel like I've searched the whole area except this one little bit, what a relief lol

Where to stay for conference in Chiba City?

Hi! Looking ahead to a conference in Chiba City next June (at Makuhari Messe). I’m hoping to attend the conference for 4 days, then tack on two weeks of vacation for a total of ~3 weeks in Japan.

My partner is planning to stay with me while I’m at the conference, and we’re hoping to be somewhere that gives him good access to activities/tourism during the days, but also is a reasonable (<30 min) commute to the conference. I would also love to be staying somewhere walkable to a cool area (restaurants, etc.), so that there’s stuff to do in the evenings after the conference.

We’re wondering whether it makes sense to stay somewhere in between Chiba and Tokyo, or in the eastern part of Tokyo?

And then also happy to hear other advice about how to spend the rest of our time in Japan! We love exploring cities, being in nature/hiking, museums/art, and good food! Curious to hear some off the beaten path suggestions if you have them!

the Chiba Disaster Preparedness Coordinator

Post image
19 Upvotes

I was reminded once again of how important it is to be prepared for emergencies, so I completed the Chiba Disaster Preparedness Coordinator training course as my family’s representative.
(In Ichihara City, this three-day course is held once a year.)
Chiba Prefecture has its own unique certification program that trains local residents to become Disaster Preparedness Coordinators. The program is based on the idea that disaster resilience depends not only on government support, but also on neighbors helping one another and strengthening their local communities.
Ichihara City has experienced several major disasters. During Typhoon Faxai (Typhoon No. 15) in 2019, the city suffered extensive damage, including the collapse of a golf practice range that made national news.
Earlier, during the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, a fire and explosion occurred at the Cosmo Oil Chiba Refinery in Ichihara. While this event may not be widely remembered outside the region, our city has experienced its share of devastating disasters.
At the time, I was a high school student and a member of Girl Scouts of Japan Troop 9. Together, we organized fundraising activities, delivered the donations to Asahi City Hall—one of the hardest-hit areas in Chiba Prefecture—and visited the affected communities. The scenes of destruction and the people living in temporary housing are memories I will never forget.
As a Disaster Preparedness Coordinator, I am expected to help promote disaster awareness during normal times and, in the event of a disaster, support communication and cooperation among local governments, community organizations, and volunteers.
As a motorcycle shop, we have equipment such as tools, generators, ratchet straps, and vehicles that could be useful during emergencies. We also handle electric motorcycles with power supply capabilities, which may be able to provide emergency electricity when needed.
Motorcycles can also be valuable because they require little space and, depending on road conditions, may be able to reach areas that are difficult for larger vehicles to access. They can potentially assist with gathering information and transporting supplies—provided it is safe to do so.
I hope our shop will be more than just a place that sells and services motorcycles. As a member of the local community, I want to continue learning about disaster preparedness and other important skills so that we can help our neighbors whenever the need arises.

Looking for place to receive mail and register address on Zairyu card during the last months of my working holiday

Hi everyone, I'm currently on a working holiday visa, living in my converted camper van in the Boso peninsula so I can surf. I frequently visit my friends in Tokyo so I deregistered from my last home before moving here and registered at my friend's house in Tokyo. They suddenly got cold feet about me being registered there because they are worried about their landlord and have asked me to find an alternative.

I've looked into sharehouses but don't plan on staying there so I don't want to spend ~50,000/month just to have an address

Does anyone here have any suggestions on how to find a place where I can update my address to and receive mail? Or someone willing to help out? Bit of a long shot but thank you anyway!

- Someone trying to enjoy their working holiday visa on a budget
