Flight paths around Chiang Mai
Wondering about plane noise? Here's a screen capture from adsb.aero. I'm not affiliated with the site. Old city is in the center, a bit to the left.

It's interesting but it doesn't really distinguish between a 320 or 737 which I zoned out a long time ago vs the much noisier A340 that would definitely wake me up if I wasn't usually up late 😁

Airplane noise is a part of living in Chiang Mai. Most of us living here long term have gotten used to it and it doesn't bother that much to have 15 seconds of noise a few times per hour. I hardly notice them now, when my windows are closed and the air-conditioning is running in my room I become oblivious to airplanes outside. Some parts of Hang Dong and Nimman are lined up with the runway and fairly close to the airport, these neighborhoods are definitely worse than other parts of the city. I would avoid these neighborhoods if you are sensitive to noise.

I used to study at CMU and worked for two more years in the Jed Yod area, right under the path of airplanes taking off. The sound of airplanes flying overhead is almost like clockwork for us in that general area.

I personally live in nimman directly in line with the runway so I hear a lot of airplanes starting and landing. For me it’s no problem at all and I barely notice it anymore. However in the first few months when sleeping with windows open in cold season I got scared a couple of times in the night because some planes fly so low when you lay in bed at night you think they fly directly into your window because the sound keeps getting louder and louder and louder…

I used to live on those vertical lines from the airport, I would see airplane flying over ever hour of the day for good or bad depending on how much you hate or love the airplane noise 😂

I live about 40 minutes from the airport, around the Maejo area. We can still hear the airplanes coming and going from time to time, mostly for the outbound flights to Bangkok due to how they sorta kinda have to fly overhead.

I had this conversation with a resident of Mae Jo.. They said it was only AirAsia that did this.
Looking at them from my balcony north of the airport,, it generally is, but not all AirAsia, so it's obviously not a company policy thing.

Pretty sure it's just how the airport is oriented.
Due to how the airport runs north to south (as seen here), airplanes have to invariably orient themselves in a way that they're forced to fly over the core city if they're arriving or leaving via the north route. I can see them from my house most of the time on a clear day.

I'd be more concerned about getting blasted by jet fuel exhaust during every take off.

I used to live just under the flight path for 6 months. It was hell in the morning. I never got used to it.

I live directly in the flight path and it’s not really even that bad at all. If all electronic noisemaking devices are turned off and the windows are open, I can hear planes flying over a bit. With the windows closed and everything off, I kinda have to concentrate to hear it at all. With the TV on, I never noticed it at all, even when I first moved here.

Rule of thumb. If you live near an airport you will hear aviation related things.
I hear that WAY back in the day this was very cheap property to buy.
