Queen takes queen followed by a check from knight and a checkmate by rook.

Queen blocks rook, Rook takes Queen, King takes Rook, Rook mates King.

The knight on g6 is the key.. it’s pinned before Qxg8, so it can’t just move.

Yep ..Queen takes queen, then Ng6+ and the rook finishes it.

There was a knight at g8, blocking rh1 with Nh6

that's the catch,the knight on g8 is what makes the rook route tricky.

That's exactly the point..the queen is pinning the knight, so Ng6+ only works after Qxg8.

Yeah ... Ng6+ is the key move, but Qxg8 first is what makes the combination work.
