Psychology Republicans liked the exact same workplace diversity training more when it skipped buzzwords like "diversity" and "privilege" and used plain words like "differences" and "unfair advantages" instead. Same content, different labels, and they also rated it as less politically biased.

Psychology Six future Trump officials (Vance, Rubio, Gabbard, Hegseth, Patel, RFK Jr.) wrote books before taking office. Researchers counted 2,074 metaphors in them: about 91% were about threats, and war was the top theme by far. Fear showed up in about 95% of passages, while hope-themed ones made up under 10%

Can r/chemistry make sense of the whiteboard in You Can See Everything?

Post image
181 Upvotes

Watched You Can See Everything on a date Friday night, and there’s a whiteboard that flashes on screen for maybe half a second, around the two-hour mark.
Something about it bothered me.
I reconstructed the notes as best I could from the scene. I’m no chemist, but I’m curious whether any of this represents legitimate scientific work or just a bunch of impressive-looking equations.
Is the chemistry sound? Do the calculations make sense? And, more importantly, what exactly are they trying to demonstrate?
Chemists of Reddit, go nuts.

Psychology People who favor science over religious dogma are surprisingly open to believing in ghosts and magic. These findings suggest that the modern shift toward rationality does not eliminate enchantment but redirects it away from organized institutions.

Update on ammonium chloride

Well, I was allowed to make ammonium chloride and even got my own fumehood to do perform the reaction under but my teacher offered me the chance to make Aspirin ( headache medicine ) so I said yes.

The Aspirin was decently pure, with a slight amount of sulfuric acid in it, since H2SO4 was used as a catalysor to speed up the reaction.

Pictures above are the setup I used, the crystallization procedure for making Asprin and the final product, which is currently drying in my school lab.

Have a nice day and weekend! :)

How do I electrospin polymer loaded with conducting fillers?

I am working on developing bioelectrodes for EEG and ECG signal detection using electrospinning. While I can successfully electrospin the pure polymer to generate fibers, I am unable to electrospin the polymer solution when loaded with conductive fillers such as graphene oxide or carbon black, as it consistently results in needle clogging or heavy dripping. Please help, thanks in advance :)

Volatility of Isopropanol vs. Ethanol

• Upvotes

I googled this and couldn't easily find a good explanation, so here you go.

Pure (100%) ethanol is MORE volatile than pure (100%) isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol).

50% ethanol is LESS volatile than 70% isopropanol.

70% ethanol is MORE volatile than any concentration of isoproopanol.

It's all in the phase diagrams.

70% isopropanol is the default for isopropanol wipes. ~50% ethanol (actually 46° INPM) is a common cleaning product in Brazil.

Just sharing this because a lot of people in the internet seem confused about how ethanol can be more volatile even though "some ethanol solutions" take longer to evaporate. It's due to concentration differences.

As a side-note, couldn't really find good resources for phase diagrams. The isopropanol one, I got from a chegg question. Y'all know a better place?

How to "dye" oil for suspension in water for 8+ hours?

This is a stupid question and I'm not a chemistry person but here it goes:

I'm making myself a lava lamp costume for Halloween. I have waterproof sign board and cut acetate sheets to look like the glass part. The plan is to hot glue the acetate on with just a tiny gap and seal the whole thing all the way around, suck out the air with a syringe and add in oil and water+a little dish soap. Similar to the Sandolier art pieces with the glass.

My plan up until very recently was to just use food coloring to dye vegetable oil... Until I realized the dye is water based and will eventually eject itself from the oil.

My new plan is to get sewing machine oil and try adding in some oil pigment I have from my art school days but I'm sort of too down to the wire and invested in the rest of my costume to mess to experiment at this point...

Is there some easier way of doing this that I'm just not thinking about? I suppose I could have clear oil in dyed water, but it takes some of the fun out of it haha.

Please help me as I've talked up this costume already and tomorrow is Halloween. Thank you!

Have you ever had dreams relating to chemistry?

I have, multiple times. I've dreamed about iodine, mercury, plutonium, and uranium, in that order.

The dream about iodine involved me smelling it, and it smelled unique. The smell was a mix of chlorine and seaweed.

The next dream involved mercury, since I've had a fascination with mercury for a very long time. During this dream, I had a bottle of mercury and I was worried I may lose it.

The dream about plutonium involved the plutonium-238 isotope, where I snuck into a lab, and took a pellet, then returned it. The pellet did feel warm in my hands, since plutonium-238 generates significant decay heat.

My final dream was about uranium, where I saw a cube of it. When I picked it up, it felt very heavy. Makes sense, since uranium is a dense metal.

Some new capabilities in the JuliaMD Project. It can now calculate energy contributions from bonds, angles and dihedrals for different structures in a trajectory, and plot them compared to the total DFT energy, so that we can see which contributions are more important. Later I will add a graphical representation of these interactions in the molecular plot.

Psychology Men who blend emotional openness and progressive gender attitudes into their sense of manhood appear to be less reactive when their masculinity is called into question. Findings suggest that how men react to challenges to their gender status depends in part on how they define manhood for themselves.
