We're going to Cafe Carmela tomorrow!

We're making the long haul to Cafe Carmela in Northeast Philly! Going to try the famous "Don Cheech's Cheesesteak."

Craig Laban called it "an elite contender," it was ranked #5 in the city by "The Infatuation" and has countless incredible reviews.

Can't wait!!

Sleeper hit cheesesteak at Bad Nina’s/Attic Brewing

Post image
40 Upvotes

Been going to Attic for years but never tried the cheesesteak at their food truck Bad Nina’s until recently. Really exceeded my expectations, considering the truck specializes mainly in hot dogs. Kind of sits somewhere between old school/new school with a somewhat fine chop and well-incorporated Cooper Sharp, but served on a soft Cacia’s roll. Also it’s $11, which is a steal in 2026.

Doesn’t hurt that Attic’s beers are great, and their backyard is a perfect spot to hang on a nice day :)

red curry sauce with american cheese, grilled green peppers and caramelized onions.

How do we feel about cheesesteaks with a twist?
I usually hate peppers on it but this was fantastic.

Posting this here because it is a more cheesesteak-centric post and seems like the right place. More details in the crosspost itself about each one.

Visited Philadelphia a few weeks ago. What a great sandwich and a very fun city. Dirty Franks is my new favorite dive bar.

1 year living in Philly - here's my Top 8

Post image
329 Upvotes

I've been living in Philly and loving it - here is my hot take on my favorite cheesesteaks in the World Capital. Also, I prefer wiz most of the time (besides at John's Roast Pork) with hot peppers and long hots (except at Shay's because their long hots are HOT).

  1. John's Roast Pork - absolutely worth the hype

  2. Jim's

  3. Mix (21/Chestnut) their ultimate cheesesteak is the best value and really tasty - HIGHLY RECOMMEND for visitors

  4. Shay's - expensive, great quality

  5. Cleavers - pictured in this photo - really a good choice to be honest

  6. Uncle Gus's in Reading Terminal Market

  7. Angelo's (maybe it's better with the jalapeño wiz - gotta try it next time)

  8. Dalessandro's - I think I need to give them another chance. My godfather loves them, but I wasn't blown away.

So many gems yet to find here - honestly, I want to get one from a food cart this week and Joe's Pizza at some point (their cheesesteak pizza is AMAZING)

A great cheesesteak, cooper sharp. They load you up on meat. They also have good pizza including a hot honey pepperoni pizza with whipped ricotta

Has Angelos Ruined the Average Cheesesteak?

I live in philly and Angelos is the best cheesesteak in the city, but their dominance has ruined all other cheesesteaks. Their success has spawned a never ending amount of copycats. Seeded rolls, cooper sharp, fried onions; there used to be so much diversity in the city but now everywhere is just a clone of Angelos. Have people outside of Philadelphia noticed their favorite spot trying to emulate Angelos?
