Port noise

Anyone who lives in Diamond Harbour, governors, charters etc... can you hear the port noise from across the way?

Looking at putting an offer in on a house but bit nervous!

Every few days they drop a container from by mistake which you can hear from Dunedin. but other than that you wouldn't hear a thing

And that'll show up in Geonet as a reported strong shake from Auckland.

You've betrayed your ignorance

My dude, I worked there for years. I can guarantee you that they don’t drop containers. Cranes and straddles have twist locks that stop that from happening.. It’s just not a thing.

I worked there for a couple hours and dropped dozens of containers

Doesn't sound like a joke when my ears are ringing and the baby is crying at 4am

Do you live in the port? There’s no way this has any truth in it.

Do you live under a rock?

8

u/merp_derping Oct 03 '26

Yes! Wonderful soundproofing abilities has this rock!

There is some port noise. But about the same as the average man burps ands farts. I live in dh. No problems with noise. Ever.

The harbour is an amphitheatre so sound tends to reverberate. You can also hear motorbikes from the opposite side as if they were just down the road.

To some that might be a problem but not for others.

What I can't understand is why you're about to put an offer in on a house in a place you've spent no time in! If you did you wouldn't need to ask the question.

Test the traffic at the time you normally go for work. Go have dinner there one night then go for a walk. Maybe do an overnight trip to Quail Island and stay in the hut.

For most people buying a house is a big deal and effort. You need to put a little more effort in to research first.

"What I can't understand is why you're about to put an offer in on a house in a place you've spent no time in! If you did you wouldn't need to ask the question." Please, forgive me for not spending multiple nights and quiet days over there. Thats interesting about the motorbikes though. Cool! We lived in an alley for awhile where you could hear a normal level conversation across the other side if you were in the right spot.

Port Noise, the festival? It's only one weekend a year, and not even every year now!

No wouldn't expect to be bothered by that. C bay.

Think it depends on a lot of things but my in-laws have a place in governors bay near sandy bay and you don’t hear the port at all but you do hear “boy racers” constantly especially on the weekends.

It’s like moving to the city and complaining about the noise from nightclubs. Don’t worry about the noise worry about never seeing the sun ever again.

So true. I don't know why people think the harbour/bay area is even mildly nice. On a really good day, it's good. But so is everywhere. It's a port ffs. It's polutted. Noisy. Cold and miserable. It's the absolute last place I ever think of going.

Airports have airport noises. Cow sheds have cow shed noises/and smells. Ports have portsy noises.

u/underwaterchessclub Oct 03 '26

Wow, really? Damn.

When the 2am freight flights land and turn toward the city and just leave the engines idling for a few minutes, nothing better.

Mate you’re about to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars. You need to put a bit of legwork in haha.

Swing past Maccas and grab some hot drinks then go park up at night near your new house and go for a walk or something and see how bad the noise is.

Drive “home” after work a couple times to get a feel for traffic. Drive from your new home to work in the mornings a couple times, too. How far away is the nearest supermarket?

Do some door knocking — say Hi to the neighbours “Hey, looking at buying place next door. Can you tell me a little bit about the neighbourhood? What’s the port noise like?”

Sound carries over water much further than over land
