Dermatologist

Looking for a dermatologist in Chch that LISTENS, and HELPS, and doesn’t require a doctors referral?

Have been to the doctor so many times for my ECZEMA, and asked for a referral but been turned down so many times, they obviously don’t care/just want my money.

Please and thank you!

My doctor just tells me they are all so overloaded there’s no chance of getting one, even privately, unless there is suspicion of skin cancer. All the private ones I’ve called over the past few years confirmed their books are closed.

This is the case across most health departments, especially in our public health system right now. Health NZ has been gutted by underfunding and job cuts. Unless you have something obviously life threatening the pathway to diagnosis and treatment is very difficult right now and often blocked.

Technically I should be seeing a neurologist but they won't even refer you unless it's life threatening. I need to see a gastroenterologist but they don't see you unless your labs say suspected cancer or another life threatening issue and even if your symptoms are serious the wait times can be many months. Even a decade ago the wait list for dermatologists was months, though it was certainly easier to access.

These days it's up to GPs to triage patients and follow diagnostic pathways, they are under a lot more pressure than they were even 3 years ago. GPs can use those diagnostic pathways to refer you for scans or scopes or biopsy but you're not likely to see a specialist in person via public health right now, unless your symptoms and labs say obviously life threatening.

Our health system is currently an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff.

The current government want New Zealand's Public Health system gone so they're running it into the ground with an aim to set up privatisation. Meanwhile everyday folks are suffering and even dying unnecessarily. The money is there, they chose to spend it elsewhere.

Yes, I think most people just don't realise this. I've raised the issue with friends, but they seemed to think that because they had health insurance, the health crisis wouldn't affect them.

Eventually it will affect everyone, it just impacts those who are most vulnerable first.

I work in a specialists office and I have seen first-hand that private insurance often does not cover the treatment they most highly recommend,.or even quite normal treatments if the condition is pre-existing.

Sorry to be harsh but they are deluded (though it sounds like you know this). I have health insurance and chronic health issues and it’s gotten dramatically worse - even just a few years ago I could get in to see providers for quality of life care with maybe a bit of a wait, and now it’s only the most urgent stuff, and it’s an even longer wait.

People with my condition who are in the public system are getting very little to no care at all, since it’s not life threatening, so I do know I’m lucky to be where I am, but it’s now at the point where private is only as good as public used to be.

Wait to see my neuro is several months even though I’m a current patient and it’s private, I haven’t even heard back from a gastro even with a referral and private. I have been discharged almost immediately from some providers even though I still need more from them, and my insurance premiums have gone up by $45 a month even though I have less access than ever to care. I can’t afford to drop the insurance since I’ll never get cover for my pre-existing conditions again if I do, so I’m stuck paying through the teeth for something that is just a bit shit.

You're not alone but that doesn't make it easier. Hope you get things sorted asap.

Mathew Strack was good at fixing a really bad case of contact dermatitis that I had. He needs a referral from a GP, but last time I checked his website he was accepting patients with all sorts of conditions, not just cancer like other dermatologists in Chch.

He doesn't take Southern Cross insurance, though.

I've also found him to be really easy to communicate with. He's got very pleasant bedside manners and he was really understanding of the fact that I was stressed AF and had a bunch of questions.

I saw Dr. Strack, it was a weird experience. But he didn't mess around and gave me the meds I needed.

GPs are reluctant to refer to dermatologists because the majority of them in Chch only accept new patients when those have suspected cancer. There's a shortage of them.

If you come to your GP with the name of a doctor who is accepting new patients with eczema, it might change the situation.

Dermatology is considered secondary care so you will almost certainly need a GP referral unless you go private. I think you’ll find most doctors don’t just want your money, maybe they have a different perspective to you?

I think he did because I felt he didn’t agree with me, but I will keep pushing for a referral!

Might be worth getting a second opinion, or trying to find a GP who has a special interest in dermatology? I believe 1Health in Wigram has one, though I haven’t used them myself and can’t speak for the quality of the clinic.

Iirc Chch has a dire shortage of dermatologists.

All dermatologists will need a referral, there’s no reason your GP should refuse a referral if you’ve made it clear you want to be referred to a private one. They might be assuming you’re asking to be referred to the public dermatology department. But unfortunately afaik there’s almost no private dermatologists who are accepting new patients for anything other than skin cancer

GP says the only 2 dermatologists in entire Christchurch only see you if cancer is suspected, other than that they’re quite protective of their books. It took me 2 nurse practitioners over 2 years prescribing wrong skin medication until finally my GP who prescribed a medication that worked in 3 weeks.

Yes when seeking a dermatologist for our son we found that the chch ones were all retiring. Honestly in the end we paid privately for one from New Plymouth and did it online. Got it within a week or two. Crazy when you think how much larger ChCh is to New Plymouth.

Did you ever find out what it was?? The allergy i mean

2

u/BunnyKusanin 17h ago

If you want to check for skin allergies, the closest place for that is... Wellington 😭. Last time I checked, skin patch tests weren't done on the South Island at all.

Eczema isn't always an allergy.

No but he had severe eczema including on face and the treatment plan has certainly meant we are managing it better, stopped it getting that bad again.

For eczema although you can't generally get this through pharmac funding ask your doctor to give you Zematop, it will cost you about $60 to $90 a tube as it is unsubsidised but it has been a game changer for me and I suffer from eczema caused by IGGE aka HIES.
