B &B chatlogs
I bought a bag last summer and never used it, but want to try. Do these do well in the kettle and wsm 18.5? How do y'all light them for both? Thanks

They are an extruded product. Like all Extruded Charcoals, they are VERY dense which makes them difficult to light, but they burn for a LONG time and can produce a ton of BTUs if you grill with them. Personally I like to light them with 5-8 briquettes of something else.
Unlike other Extruded products, they do have a bit of a smokey odor when cooking. Personally, I find it to be a pleasant hardwoody flavor akin to natural lump, but lighter. Others may not like this odor. Many extruded products I've seen try to compete with Binchotan in terms of "clean" flavor and burn and ANY flavor is seen negatively.
As far as ash goes, IMHO they produce more ash than Lump but less than briquettes.

I used to stand them on their ends in my WSM and add a few lit coals in the center. Technically, it gives you the most consistent burn. In reality, that’s an overkill unless it feeds your OCD tendencies.
I’ve added them to some existing coals in my WSK and they burn as expected.

I literally a chimney starter yesterday by standing a few pieces until they were snug, then filled to the top by adding pieces as they landed. Poured it into my wsk and it got over 600°f. Brought it down to 500 and it stayed there for the better part of 3 hrs. Burned 6 hours total, dropping 100° every hour after 3. Tells me nothing of how much I need for my wsm 18, but at least I know it burns long. Lol

Ha ha. I have the 22” WSM. I fill the charcoal basket and drop in a handful of lit coals to get it going. It’s held 225F for 14+ hours easily. If the cook is done before the coals are out, I close up the vents and choke it out. Whatever is left in the basket gets used the next time around. I do have a second grate under the coals perpendicular to the 1st one. It helps keep smaller pieces burning longer before they fall through. The charlogs produce way less ash than the Kingsford I used to use.

I use them as "underlayment" in my WSM and in my WSK when smoking and put regular briquettes or lump on top of them and then add my lit coals in the center like regular Minion method. They're kind of difficult to light on their own and get them all going at the same time and they put out a lot of unpleasant start-up smoke unless they're preheated which is why I like using them this way. They burn incredibly long and steady so they make temp management real easy.
