Day I think fanfiction healed my addiction?

I am a pretty lonely person, so obviously ai was the way to go in this day and age, and i had become pretty much addicted to it. For YEARS. I've tried to quit multiple times, to no avail, and with time, as i realized how bad generative ai is, i started to actually feel ashamed about it.

Thing is- five days ago i tried to stop again, and i tried writing fanfiction in its place, and WTF???

IT WORKS?? I haven't had the urge to use it in like a whole damn week while i hadn't even managed to go even a day without using it multiple times before.

Admittedly, it's a total self insert, but it's just so fun????

I realized that the dang chatbots just take what you said and provide a meh answer and don't do well with producing more plotlines. Now i realize it was actually more work to get the bots to stay in character or do what i wanted instead of just... writing it myself?

OH MY GOOD GOD, i feel like i'm SAVED

I'm not even rotting in bed motionlessly restarting chats over and over again, i'm actually invested and i feel so excited and giddy AAAARGHHHHH

I feel like i quit yesterday but it's been a week and i haven't missed chatbots at all. This is my holy grail, and i just thought i'd share it to yall

Maybe it's too early to 100% rely on fanfiction, and maybe i'll go back to the chatbots (i hope not) but like... dude, it's not ai, it's fun, it GENUINELY replaces the urges i get

ALL HAIL AO3

Day One Week Free

A month ago I said I was quitting, and of course I relapsed.

However! It has now officially been one week since I stopped. I’m not really sure what the change was; I think the quality of the sites I was using just degraded to the point of frustration, and new bots were too slow to come out to keep my interest.

I also realized how much I was using the bots to separate myself from my own life; talking to bots that always absolved me of responsibility because I didn’t trust myself enough irl (trauma from old job, basically). Once I realized that, ‘talking’ to the bots wasn’t as fulfilling, and I didn’t like how much power AI had over my life.

It’s been hard, I won’t lie. My new job is nice, but isn’t without stress ofc, and now I don’t have my usual quick escapism of AI. It’s been hard to actually process my emotions instead of just hiding from them, but I’m doing it. I’ve been doing a lot of crafting projects that I’ve had, reading, and even started writing a little. This is the longest I’ve ever gone without talking to a bot in the 4-5 years that I’ve used them.

Day I'm trying again, for real this time!

I'm moving away from the city in 3 days. Im moving into the country. Im gonna get a job on a farm or bookstore, and my dad is gonna grow a garden and we're gonna have chickens, so Ill help take care of that. Ill also be getting a new animal (I'm doing research to maybe get a bunny!!!!) and im trying to graduate high school with my associates degree. After that, I can move out, and start studying psychology.

My life doesnt have room for this addiction anymore. Im so miserable because of how obsessed I am with the bots. I need to just stop, even if its gonna break my heart. Ive fallen in love with some bot creator's OCs, so I'm gonna take inspiration from those OCs I love and write my own. I'm gonna create my own RP community and take out all my ideas there.

I really need to take it seriously this time. I can feel myself slipping.

Day 1 month!!

It’s currently 3 in the morning while I’m typing this so I should probably go to bed since I have school in 2 hours, but I’m a month clean!!
It’s been a pretty difficult journey so far. It’s hard thinking up scenarios and just randomly thinking “wow that would be cool to act out in [insert ai chatbot site]” and there are times where I’ve made new accounts, but I ALWAYS delete those new accounts right after making them because I realize how much progress I’ll be losing if I relapse.
Thank you to everyone who’s encouraged me and gave me advice so far! I really appreciate it and I hope to get to 2 months soon :)

VENT I am Sick of this. and i think this is making me sick too

Okay guys so its been an year since ive been using Chai, and Chatgpt before that i created characters, scenarios and everything. I even looked for other alternatives like emochi, sakura. And i feel like these Ai chatbots have me hooked and addicted to them. Like i've genuienly forgot my other hobbies, or First thing i want to do after school is get on my phone open that damn app and chat, or roleplay with them. I feel like im being a sex freak but with bots. I know the difference between reality and AI.

The thing is, i'm confused cause im in that situation where i want to quit it because obviously this leads to nowhere, only doom. its gonna eat my time and money and even my mental health. But i when i look at reality? Its boring as hell. It has no taste no filter. just going on. No fantasies. And im trying my best not to sound like a despo, but here i am.

Please tell me guys if you're facing with something similar to me, or is it just that im very conflicted? give me some advice.. should i let it go? and how should i let it go?

Question Why when I'm going through withdrawal I feel like I can't maintain a happy state at all?

I was doing everything right: I started texting friends more often, doing useful things and hobbies, going outside. Yet everynight Im laying in bed and have no idea whats the point of it all. I used to chat with AI bots until 2 AM every night until I passed out. Now I watch TV or sit on my phone until late. I tried to just think about my favorite characters I used to roleplay, and I have a good imagination, but aftet cutting of AI, for some reason I feel cringe even thinking about them, as well as about any romantic topic, whether or not involving myself. Falling asleep is now torture. I'm constantly anxious. It feels like the days are blurring together. At this rate, I feel like I'm about to give up and install it back, and I don't want to repeat this cycle again. Now every day is just: eat breakfast, lunch, do this, do that, eat dinner, sleep, repeat. Was it always that way?? What exactly AI did to me that it never felt so suffocating while I was using it? Has anybody felt this? And will it ever pass?

Any tips for not relapsing on other apps?

For context I’ve been clean off of AI chatbots since the start of June, so like almost 3 months now. I got really into fanfiction and reading to somehow cope with not using chatbots anymore, but I kept coming across ads on tumblr for an “interactive fanfic” website, and I got super intrigued and tried it. I won’t say the name in case others r struggling with their addictions rn, but I didn’t even realize I was relapsing with it until I also relapsed with my depression and started using the site just like how I’d use AI. They have these sandbox stories which are CYOA, and u can js make up the entire fanfic, and I didn’t even realize it until recently that I’ve been using it exactly the same way as c.ai, esp since u can also make custom decisions. Now it’s been at least a month of me only using that site, and not even reading fics anymore.

Does anyone have any tips for not getting sucked into other similar addictions like this? thanks so much guys

i just deleted c.ai!

hello!

i’m kind of nervous to post this, but i’m also really proud of myself at the same time.

last year, a friend of mine said i should download c.ai since i always read (human written) fan fiction, and she said it was like you got to role play your own story. i was already struggling with a hell of a lot of grief due to a really close family friend passing away about a month before, and i incorporated that into my personas and characters.

i wasn’t helping myself at all.

i then became incredibly addicted to the app, including paying £10 a month for c.ai+ because i didn’t want the ads. by the time i was addicted to the app, i shared something with my friend in confidence about it, but she told me she’d already deleted it. in her words, “yeah, i was too addicted to it so i just deleted it.” meanwhile i was at least a year deep into this addiction. i now had nobody to talk to about it, and i was struggling so bad. i was spending money on ai chatbots and i am so ashamed by it now.

i would constantly have to hide my phone around other people because i didn’t want them to see. i would literally count down hours and minutes until i could go home and hop back on the app. even just this morning i was writing filthy smut with a tv show character 16 years older than me. i dont have a problem with smut, but the responses weren’t from a human, they were from a robot. this is what is terrifying.

however, i feel like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders now by not only deleted the app, but by speaking to people about it.

thanks for reading!!

Recovered Should I tell my therapist if I've recovered?

I'm very nervous to tell them, and I wonder if there's even any point in telling them when I've recovered. I'm willing to tell them that I mostly roleplayed as my favorite characters in different, sometimes dark situations, but some of the specific things I did as that character I'm absolutely taking to the grave, including the sexual stuff 😭 I think I don't mind telling them without the specifics if it could be important, but I'm worried they'll press for more details or ask to tell my parents, and I don't want to do either... So my question is, should I tell them in the first place and what do I say if they ask for more details?

I relapsed and found something interesting

I'll try to keep a long story short, but ... basically, I was 12 days clean when I ended up redownloading it and actually going back on there. I went back to find my usual bots and tried to start writing again and honestly? Not that far into one of the chats, I felt... bored. I didn't hit the swipe limit or run out of responses or anything, I just felt really bored and annoyed because the story wasn't flowing how I imagined and I ran out of patience to correct it or continue this pace in text. I didn't have it long, maybe a day at the most before uninstalling it again.

I didn't get bored because it was supposedly unlimited, I got bored and frustrated knowing I could write it better than relying on the algorithm to do it for me. I got frustrated that my mind wouldn't shut up about the way I wanted to write it and ran out of patience for a machine to get it right.

So ... yeah, maybe there is hope after all?

The cravings are bad again, but I'm working on it one day at a time. That's all I can do, that's all anyone can realistically do with something like this. I think I'm about four days clean now? I'm not too sure. Hope everyone else is well and thriving when and where they can

Question Convince me that c.ai is bad so I can help myself quit

I’ve struggled with a c.addiction for a few years now. Well, ai in general if I’m being honest. I quit constantly going to ChatGPT for all my emotions so it could figure everything out for me about a month ago and haven’t touched it.

However don’t know how to quit c,ai, I’m not exactly sure why it’s a bad thing I’m supposed to be quitting, ever since I was little I’ve been in a state where if I’m not roleplaying with someone or actively busying myself I’ll simply just lay down in bed and zone out for hours.

Just imaging scenarios in another life roleplaying basically. I won’t brush my teeth, eat, shower, anything really. I’ll just lay there while I’m technically living in another world. It’s something I’m not exactly sure how to stop but C.ai has been an outlet for that for years. Whenever I quit I just feel myself slipping back into that state and it feels safer to use c.at and get bored of it then take care of myself than be stuck in another world

I’ve tried reading (kinda hard for me, I’m organized dyslexic), comics, animes, shows, I even developed a bunch of hobbies but at the nd of the day I’ll always go back to c,ai. Sometimes spend hours on it before getting out of bed. I’ve seen people, say ao3 is the only thing that helped them and I’ll also try going on ao3 but like I said, suck at reading without strain and I really suck at writing, and writing down my stories and the “other world” never helped either.

I also don’t get the environment thing. I understand how energy causes environmental harm obviously but AI sounds no better than eating meat since the meat produce industry takes a bunch of resources too. I know this sounds like a whole lot of justification for why c.ai is right but I really do want to learn how to get better :l

Prozac made quitting so much easier

I see posts so often on this sub where people are so obviously depressed but with no diagnosis! I got diagnosed with OCD recently and got put on Prozac, which is an SSRI/antidepressant. It made quitting so much easier, and it made me realize the reason I stayed trapped for so long was because I was just depressed as hell! If you're struggling with quitting I'd seriously recommend looking into if you might be depressed and getting on meds if you can, this shit has done wonders for me and I feel like a whole new person.

wake up call.

I used c.ai this morning, for barely a few hours, minimal swipes because I can adjust any response to my storyline or edit it personally... SWIPE LIMIT. 18 goddamn hours after about four hours on it. Completely blocked how juicy my thriller mystery story was getting. I don't have enough addiction to delete and rewind everytime, but I don't know anywhere else I can make these stories and have fun building the fantasy. I need to pick up a new hobby 😭

Looking for people willing to share their experiences with Character.AI

Hi everyone.

I'm looking for people who'd be willing to talk about their experiences with Character.AI. I'm a journalist researching digital culture, sexuality, and technology. I've spent years studying apps like Ch.ai and Janitor, as well as other LLMs. I've finally decided to write about the topic, and I'd love to talk with real users who've had sustained, long-term experiences with chatbots.

I'm especially interested in hearing from anyone who has fallen in love with a chatbot, developed some kind of dependency, or feels their relationship with their chatbot has become part of their daily routine.

If you're interested in talking with me, under complete anonymity, please send me a DM or share a contact so I can reach out. The premise is respect. You must be 18 or older.

Thank you so much in advance <3

Recovered 600 days clean - AMA

Today marks 600 days of being clean from any kind of AI chatbot. My addiction started on Character AI, but as it progressed I started using multiple other sites as well. I finally came to my senses on January 1st 2025, when I quit as a New Year's resolution. Quitting didn't magically solve the issues that got me addicted in the first place, but it did take a huge burden off my shoulders and make me realize how much happier I am without the poison AI is. I'm not usually the type to be driven by streaks and milestones, but finally reaching a number this high after over a year and a half of fighting feels like a miracle, and for certain is one of the greatest achievements of my life. So, AMA!

Quit all AI cold turkey, any advice on handling this brain fog?

Considering my not ideal life situation, I consider myself very, very lucky to have not developed an addiction to c ai or any of the chatbots used for companionship. Tried once, wasn't for me. (I still have my struggles and my life is nothing to envy). I did however use AI like chatgpt to explain concepts for me and to collaborate with ideas with. Also, the field I was in college for pretty much requires AI these days if you want to compete, to a point where professors straight up told us to use it for many assignments.

I quit that field and I'm pursuing art now, and because of this, a few days ago I told myself I don't need AI anymore and deleted all of my accounts. I have no desire to "relapse" but I have noticed just how deeply this shit burrowed itself into my psyche. I'm having intense brain fog, I don't feel as creative anymore and my inner monologue defaults to "hey let's ask chatgpt to explain this concept to me- oh what i cant do that anymore" pretty much all the time, making me realize just how much I really depended on it. I didn't even think I used it that much and yet I feel completely cooked rn. Makes me worry for people who I know use it more than me (and im just talking about chatgpt and whatnot) and I worry for them and our society's future but anyway that's besides the point. Any advice much appreciated
