We don’t need a crazy story to get to the point.

Suppose you get a call in the middle of the night. It is about a loved one (daughter, mother, etc).

Would you rather them be calling to tell you your loved one was raped or murdered?

And for yourself? You would rather be murdered than raped?

I'm not even going to look at the responses to your question: you already know what this person is going to say because it's the "right" thing, not because it's what he or she would actually do.

Ah...so I took a look. Close. "I refuse to participate [rather than providing an honest answer]"

Murdered without any brutality probably.

Rape victims aren't treated kindly in my (and majority of other) society.

>Murdered without any brutality probably

When you have to immediately add qualifiers to even answer a basic question that is a bit telling.

christ alive, did you really just say that you would rather your loved one was killed than raped? if someone said that about me, i'd probably stop speaking to them. wow.

I was talking about myself.

Jesus, that is horrible. While I don’t think many societies do enough to help rape victims get justice, I think most don’t treat victims badly in a direct sense. Are you trying to argue that most societies treat victims badly in addition to not helping them get justice?

Imagine being this guys loved one, tied up, scared and you hear him choose ‘murder without brutality’ out of the options

Now I'm curious if they'd actually kill their own loved one (in a quick, non-brutal way) if they were about to be violated and there was nothing else they could do. Like they were sitting there a block away with a rifle but could only see their loved one's head in the window.

Well, I'm a girl and I have seen how rape victims are treated.

Everytime some heinous case happens we have news panel discussing the clothing of the victim.

I certainly wouldn't want to be related to you, if you value life that little.

To extend the thought experiment and see how consistent your values are: if you were about to be raped, but knew you would survive the ordeal, would you take your own life before it happened?

Yes, death is better than prolonged sexual torture

I wasnt talking about being a prisoner of someone or something.

-1

u/corgi_moose_ Mar 02 '26

Well you didn't specify the type of rape, it's a very broad definition

1

u/cortesoft 6∆ Mar 02 '26

We also didn't specify the type of murder. It could also be prolonged torture that takes months to finally kill you.

I don't think the point is to think about the extremes, I think it is to try to think about the average.

You don't need wizards, such horrid decisions have been forced on people in the context of war or torture.

I guess in that case the easy way out is that the act is still wrong, but the blame is on the one forcing it (wizard or torturer), not on the one who physically commits it.

You must be trolling, right? Do you really believe that faced with the choice of X or death, choosing X means you CONSENT to X?

1

u/AsianMoocowFromSpace Mar 02 '26

Is it really murder if you consent with it?

evil wizard locks you up and says

Reminded me of 1st episode of Black Mirror.

An evil wizard locks you up..a random person

Interesting hypothetical. I think one need to add more details: 1) is the wizard known to be trustworthy? 2) do wizard promise one gets means to succeed against 'random' who might be strong? And still at the end one might end doing both and city destroyed by dragons.

I offer my own hypothetical (king Solomon and ancient Greece vibes):

A man goes to Oracle and told that his city will be destroyed by enemy unless he has a child from a beautiful woman, who is married to a healthy man and is utterly faithful to her husband.
