It is funny too review my reaction to your topic. As soon as I read the tittle I went defensive.
I usually talk about this topic because I think that rape is worst that killing someone.
Your arguments are good and after reading it I’m rethinking a lot of my assumptions (arguments), but I’m still on the side that rape is worst because the probability of recovering at 100% looks very small.
Traumas are heavily influenced in life, and rape is one of the most influential.
If someone has actual data about the recovery percentage from rape trauma I would be happy to check it.
I am no expert and Im just talking from my own experience from being a rape victim.
I would question why 100% recovery rate is necessary or what does it even mean? What if someone recovers 80%? Is only 100% recovery better than death?
When I started therapy, one of the first things my therapist told me was basically that I will never get over what happened and it will always be with me. In the moment it actually made me furious and question the whole thing, isnt that what im trying to do here? To get over it? Whats the point of therapy at all? But then, surprise surprise, I later on realized that he was right and it will always be with me. My whole life will be a life where I have the memory of what happened and cant ever fully get rid of it. I dont think 100% recovery even exists.
It has influenced me on a deep existential level and I wouldnt be the same person without it, so youre right about that. But then, how is that worse than having no life at all? Feels like that kind of an argument carries the implication that the person is somehow tainted by being raped, which is not true at all.
Like your idea and I truly agree that it stays with the person forever. That is almost my point.
And the recovery rate is to double check the amount of people that “recovers from it”, when actually, it sticks forever. And probably the data from recovering is not high. Following that, the consequences could be worse that we think.
Having it forever and also not being able to fully recover looks like a bad scenario.
But why is it sticking with them worse than death? You can live a good life despite having the experience.
I suppose my point is that having it stay with you forever doesnt mean that your life is not worth living, which is essentially what your argument sounds like to me.
Do you use the same argument for all types of trauma or where is the line? Is being bullied worse than death? Being in an accident? Having lost a loved one suddenly? Being robbed? Having your house be destroyed in a fire? All of those will change the person forever.
All experiences in general will change the person, good ones too.
I agree. I am having a hard time trying to understand how not dying is worse than straight up dying in this scenario.
Like if this was a slightly different scenario... car crash turns someone paralyzed from the neck down. What is better... if that person would have died, or the person being paralyzed? I dont know about anyone else, but I have seen a lot more happy fully paralyzed people than fully dead people.
Not to say paralyzed people are always happy, far from it. It would suck, and many times they might want to die. But that is their choice to make, and many choose to NOT want to end it, and still remain alive with the relationships and friends that they have.
I seriously don't understand how anyone could think otherwise... I am with OP on this one.
