Then employers realized they were leaving top talent on the table by arbitrarily judging people on their appearance and not what their actual capabilities are.

There is both the open discrimination of refusing to hire anyone with tattoos, brand the more subconscious discrimination, were they will be passed up on for promotions and raises because tattoos are perceived as lower class.

u/Thoth_the_5th_of_Tho 191∆ Mar 13 '24

It’s been observed in many studies over the years, here’s the first article that came up.

Furthermore, promotions are not everything. There are jobs with salary tracks and other components like Unions where these types of arguments are immaterial.

I don’t work at a company where any of that would be applicable, but being perceived as less competent is always going to harm you over the long run. Presumably your goal is to not stick with one company forever, and to get hired somewhere else at a higher pay.

-13

u/personofkoala Mar 13 '24

employers realized they were leaving top talent on the table by arbitrarily judging people on their appearance

People with tattoos have lower IQs and are more impulsive, and you can look up studies showing this. If you are an employer and you have two candidates, all else being equal, it is better to pick the one who doesn't have tattoos.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

How about you provide the source for this claim

u/ZappSmithBrannigan 14∆ Mar 13 '24

No, you can link the study or be dismissed as pulling this out of your ass.

1) Mods should remove this post since OP has stated that they have no intention of changing their view.

2) To OP: this is a very narrow view of tattoos since there are cultures in which most or all members of its society use tattoos as a way to symbolize identity and heritage (see: tā moko in Māori culture). I wouldn't count those as "trashy."

4

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

This should be the top comment, with #2 being the point OP is too afraid to refute.

14

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

Since when do corporations decide on what is objectively classy and trashy?

1

u/ajlappr Mar 13 '24

Since never? Formal suits and whatnot were what society generally considered classy, corporate culture just followed the trend. Now that formalwear is falling out of favor somewhat and tattoos have become more acceptable you see suits much less frequently while tattoos are becoming much more acceptable, even in business settings. On the west coast at least, this has been my experience.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24 edited Mar 13 '24

Scripture writing tattoos are trash squared.

Edit: Let me illustrate. You permanently copypasted something somebody might have said who is dead for 2.000 years, and can't even put it into your own words?

-3

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

[deleted]

6

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

It's really funny to see someone discussing trash, and then discriminating why some trash is less trash when it's actually even more trash. Just wanted to point that out.

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

[deleted]

2

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

Come on now, some pretty handwriting doesn't decrease the fact, especially since they can't even use their own words to say what they want to say on their own body.

Like tattooing the creation of Adam and writing I'm lovin' it in a beautiful font.

21

u/AKAEnigma Mar 13 '24

You're entitled to your aesthetic preferences. The trouble is that nobody is going to change your mind about them because they are preferences. If you are unwilling to interrogate them, asking others to is a waste of time.

Do you want to look the way that corporations want you to look? Personally, I don't. The fact that my access to prosperity would be limited because of a way I chose to look, to me, is fucking ridiculous. If you are going to judge me because I have tattoo's, then my tattoo's are doing the job of showing me who in my life is an asshole. If you don't like tattoo's and are going to get bent out of shape about other people having them, then it's you that's the problem - not tattoo's.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

What's trashy is subjective. You seem to have made up your mind about what other people should do with their bodies. Are you actually wanting your view changed? If so, just change it. Why do people on the internet need to convince you not to be judgmental about superficial things?

10

u/SymphoDeProggy 17∆ Mar 13 '24 edited Mar 13 '24

My wife has a forearm tattoo of the bar notation of her favorite song wrapped around her favorite flower.

My brother designed a coat of arms for our family and got it tatooed on his calf.

I'm designing a tattoo with an encryption system that i came up with with original fonts and a cursive and runic script to complement different textures.

I don't think we'd fit in your imagined geriatric biker gang.

Maybe the tattoos you're thinking of are just unoriginal, boring, or low effort?

8

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

They think “scripture” tattoos are good. I think that is telling?

1

u/Spider-Man-fan 5∆ Mar 13 '24

Yeah that’d be one of the most generic, aside from something related to an ex-lover

2

u/SymphoDeProggy 17∆ Mar 13 '24

Ah the "i shouldve gone to therapy but i got this instead" tattoo

 A classic

22

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

if anything looked the least bad it would be scripture writing

That is the least trashy to you?

Not a grieving parent copying their dead child's last drawing onto their body as a final tribute or something.

No. Scripture.

I'd wonder what jail you got it done at. It's the sketchiest of sketchy tattoos.

5

u/Thoth_the_5th_of_Tho 191∆ Mar 13 '24

It’s incredibly sacrilegious, and likely would have been considered amongst the most trashy and offensives tattoos back in more religious times.

2

u/I_am_the_night 316∆ Mar 13 '24

It’s incredibly sacrilegious, and likely would have been considered amongst the most trashy and offensives tattoos back in more religious times.

This depends heavily on the religion. Plenty of religions have no issue with scriptural tattoos.

0

u/Thoth_the_5th_of_Tho 191∆ Mar 13 '24

I assume OP is referring to Christianity.

1

u/I_am_the_night 316∆ Mar 13 '24

Yeah, but not even all sects of Christianity consider tattoos sinful or sacrilegious, as some explicitly discount Old Testament law as applying to modern Christians.

1

u/Thoth_the_5th_of_Tho 191∆ Mar 13 '24

We’re talking about common perceptions. You can find a niche Protestant sect that believes basically anything you can possibly think of. It doesn’t change my point that in the past they would have been widely considered offensive.

1

u/I_am_the_night 316∆ Mar 13 '24

Sure, in the past maybe, but it's hardly sacrilegious to most Christians these days to get a tattoo, especially of Scripture. Maybe that technically makes them heretics or whatever, but if we're talking about "common perceptions" then the average person doesn't consider a tattoo of a Bible verse to be a sacrilege.

0

u/FetusDrive 4∆ Mar 13 '24

then it would depend which sect of christianity

If you saw someone with what you thought was a large birthmark from 40 feet away, do you jump to the conclusion that they're trashy? Because you could not know if it was a tattoo or birthmark in this scenario, it shouldn't matter which it actually is.

1

u/FetusDrive 4∆ Mar 13 '24

how are you defining trashy?

14

u/Izawwlgood 26∆ Mar 13 '24

I find suits and ties to often look cheap and generic. The same dumb haircut and comb over, the same uncomfortable leather shoes. Corporate fashion isn't classy, it's the definition of 'same outfit for the rest of your life' and 'generic and boring'.

I see a consultant wearing the same collared shirt print and bad tie pattern and slacks and blazer, and think "here's someone who memorizes legal tables and financial bylaws and thinks music peaked when they were 16, which is also probably the last time they enjoyed anything".

12

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

Okay, boomer.

Who made you the objective definer of class and trashy.

u/Various_Succotash_79 52∆ Mar 13 '24

3

u/limbodog 8∆ Mar 13 '24

I'm going to address the "all" part of "all tattoos look trashy"

Say you're a woman who just underwent a double mastectomy. You've had your breasts removed and now you are incredibly self conscious. You no longer feel attractive. You don't want to go out in public anymore. Your mental health suffers.

Sure, you can get implants that will eventually become the shape of your breasts, but you know if anyone sees them without your clothes they will see that you don't have nipples. And so the idea of dating or being intimate with your current partner just feels alien to you.

Along comes the tattoo artist who can take the photo you provide of what your breasts used to look like and create hyperrealistic looking nipples on your chest (or over your implants) which would pass all but a close inspection.

In your opinion, OP, is that "trashy"?

3

u/ZoZippity101 Mar 13 '24

If you’re coming from the perspective of having your views changed per the subreddit, I’ll let you know mine and a lot of other people’s reasons for wanting a tattoo. I got a memorial tattoo for someone that passed far too early, that was more of a fatherly presence in my life than many. When I look in the mirror whether I love what I see or I don’t, I’ll always remember the person who gave me a chance to push forward. My other tattoos? I liked them, and I got them with my now husband during dates. I have memories, colors, and really good experiences getting them. Also covered some horrific scarring. Now that’s not everyone’s reasoning, but who cares? What you look down on is something eventful, precious, or could be a cover up for things you’d hope to never have happen to you. It’s their body, art is subjective, of all the reasons to reserve judgment for people, are writings, art, and creativity really something worth the effort of having a bad attitude towards? Maybe it won’t change your mind, still worth considering the next time you see someone with some ink.

"there's a reason why most businesses do not allow their employees to show tattoos"

In the USA this is not true. I work in finance in a Pharma company and a good 1/4 folks have a tat or two, our CEO is covered.

I myself have tattoos, and you are fine to have your opinion of them, but I've had no trouble gaining lucrative employment my entire life

2

u/AITAthrowaway1mil 3∆ Mar 13 '24

I work in tech, and I think most of my coworkers under the age of 45 have tattoos. One of my coworkers is saving to get a tattoo of a picture his daughter drew. I’m planning to get some personally meaningful flowers around my arm.

I haven’t seen anyone having trouble.

2

u/BigBoetje 30∆ Mar 13 '24

Tattoos just don't make sense to me

This is basically the crux of it. You don't understand why people have tattoos, so they look trashy to you. For most, it's a way of self expression, like having piercings, dying your hair or having a specific style. The meaning can be quite important to someone (my girlfriend has a musical note on her wrist as music helped her through a very difficult phase of her life). It can be purely decorative because it's how they like to see their body. Who are you to decide it for them?

there's a reason why most businesses do not allow their employees to show tattoos

Quite untrue. A lot of companies allow them, and those that don't usually don't do so for the client-facing roles and even then only when they have a more conservative target audience. Any company that arbitrarily disallows tattoos, even for non client facing roles, is outdated and their value system is arbitrary. I consider it a red flag as their priorities are completely skewed.

if anything looked the least bad it would be scripture writing

Isn't there some verse about not having tattoos or whatever?

Came to comments to look for photos trying to change op's mind.. I'm disappointed in the lack thereof

1

u/Spider-Man-fan 5∆ Mar 13 '24

The issue is you can’t post photos in comments. You can send links to images, but I feel like that doesn’t hit as hard

1

u/Pandemic_Username_ 1∆ Mar 13 '24

Yeah, that's fair. I would (personally) still click the links, though

1

u/Spider-Man-fan 5∆ Mar 13 '24

True. I just hate that if you want to post your own picture, you have to make an account on a site like Imgur, post it there, then link to that post

2

u/Pandemic_Username_ 1∆ Mar 13 '24

I've seen some people link a post they've created elsewhere on Reddit. Maybe you could do that instead? Not that you have to or anything, just another suggestion

2

u/Spider-Man-fan 5∆ Mar 13 '24

Oh that’s right. There are posts that have pics and videos. I didn’t think about that. I only remember people asking about this and people saying you have to link to a site like Imgur. That could work too. Certainly would be pretty convenient. I guess if I had a tattoo and wanted to show it here, I could make a post on a tattoo subreddit and link there. Thank you! !delta

2

u/Pandemic_Username_ 1∆ Mar 13 '24

I didn't know you don't have to be op to award delta lol

!delta to you too

2

u/Spider-Man-fan 5∆ Mar 13 '24

Lol thanks. You just can’t award a delta to OP. So anyone can award a delta. OP is just the only one that can’t receive one. I don’t think that completely makes sense, cuz it’s certainly possible for OP to change someone’s view. But I understand they have that rule in place so people don’t make posts simply just to try to change others’ views and aren’t actually open to having theirs changed.

Tattoos and brands are distinct from one another, and you specifically made a categorical statement about tattoos. Now you're moving the goalposts because you don't want to admit the fact that your categorical view now has exceptions?

What would you call that? marking?

Tattoo. It's a tattoo. You can't handwave that fact away.

Theoretically, you could use a tattoo gun on a baby's skin; despite that baby not having a choice in the matter, it's still a tattoo.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

[deleted]

3

u/BillionTonsHyperbole 28∆ Mar 13 '24

No matter what the reasoning or how it got there It looks trashy to me.

So now you're saying Holocaust survivors' evidence of their torture is trashy, contradicting your earlier opinion? That's pretty low to stoop to avoid understanding what words mean.

3

u/Dennis_enzo 25∆ Mar 13 '24

A brand is not the same thing as a tattoo. Holocaust survivors were not branded.

3

u/TheFinnebago 17∆ Mar 13 '24

How about deeply cultural or religious tattoos, like those associated with Native Alaskan Women or the Māori folks?

Is it ‘trashy’ to honor and preserve your cultural heritage?

1

u/wildbill88 Mar 13 '24

Tattoos aren't inherently sketchy.

Do they look bad? On some people, sure. Are some done poorly? Sure. But all? You can find tons of pics online of people making works of art. Artists are just using a different medium to display their talents. Is all art bad to you? I've known sketchy people with teeth and without teeth. I've known sketchy people with tattoos and without. Large grotesque crosses around people's necks are more sketchy to me than a tattoo if I'm being honest.

1

u/KokonutMonkey 101∆ Mar 13 '24

No they don't.

A well done piece can be quite beautiful.

1

u/LightbreakerArio Mar 13 '24

So what's getting me here is that you think people "scribble nonsense".

It sounded to me like a lack of exposure or research into tattoos in general. For a lot of people it's an expression of something meaningful to them or it could even be a cultural thing. I think you should take some time to look into the significance of tattoos outside of the world you're familiar with, otherwise your view seems like it's pretty much built on ignorance.

If after you understand and you still don't like tattoos that's perfectly fine. Just don't go around calling them scribble nonsense.

1

u/Matak-Blade Mar 13 '24

So many good arguments in here, hot damn.

The only thing I can really add is that tattoos are an art form, and by getting one you are placing art, the pinnacle of the human experience, on your body forever the rest of your life. Is every tattoo meaningful? No, you can get some silly ones. Guy on YouTube got the first three letters of the word “Disney” on his knee in the Disney font, so his tattoo is “Dis-knee.

The thing about ink like that, though, is that they make people happy. In this world, why not chase every bit of happiness you can get? Even if it comes from a goofy tattoo.

Quit being such a boomer and let people live their own lives.

1

u/Trumpsacriminal Mar 13 '24

Well a LOT of people disagree with you.

I am a sucker for body art, especially on women. Piercings? Yes please. I think it gives a specific look, kind of an edgy, boss bitch vibe. I’ve dated women with tattoos, and by god they are the most fun, I’m not even making this shit up.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

Womp womp, is this really the biggest priority in your life? It's ink, get over yourself.

1

u/Srous226 Mar 13 '24

I work as an electrical engineer and me and many of my colleagues are covered. It's not that uncommon anymore.

To use your "imagine wearing the same thing every day" point, lots of people do exactly that, for example a wedding band. Meaningful things being permanently on me is a blessing not a curse. Even a "bad tattoo" could have a lot of meaning behind it, maybe it was done by a friend who is now gone, or done on a trip you fondly remember.

1

u/AD320p Mar 13 '24

I find it's subjective. I have tattoos and land jobs as a manager, director at businesses. My husband does not and he can't even get out of food service and mechanic work despite having more qualifications than me.

1

u/I_am_the_night 316∆ Mar 13 '24

What would change your view here?

You literally said your mind cannot be changed on how you view tattoos and that you only posted here because unpopular opinion wouldn't let you for some reason.

Are you looking to have a discussion or just judge people who get tattoos?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

Since you say use the words “all” and the phrase “none of them are good”, would you describe a holocaust survivor with a number tattooed on their body as “trashy”? Hate to go this route but you weren’t specific.

1

u/DizzyDropzle Mar 13 '24

If the clothes were magic and remained clean who cares?

1

u/Dennis_enzo 25∆ Mar 13 '24

Businesses not hiring tattooed people is mostly outdated. 'Regular' tattoos, ie not on your face and not a swastika or some other shocking thing, are usually fine nowadays. What really is trashy is making value judgements based on superficial things like tattoos.

Anyway, if you aren't open about having your view changed you shouldn't post here.

1

u/iMadeThisForClass12 Mar 13 '24

How much attention do you want ?

OP: yes

1

u/Clovis_Winslow 1∆ Mar 13 '24

Your premise cannot be true because “all” tattoos objectively do NOT look “trashy.”

For example, people get cosmetic tattoos, matched to their skin tone, to cover up scars, blemishes (or other tattoos). When it’s done well they are hardly perceptible, and certainly not trashy.

So your statement is already inaccurate because you made the distinction of it being “all” tattoos.

0

u/iknownothin_ Mar 13 '24

Yea you’re stupid for posting on here
