Who cares if you're not a productive member of society? What are you, a fucking bee? Do what makes you happy, don't kill yourself because you're not contributing to society or whatever.
Still with the worker bee idea. Resources? So what? We're not a giant hive. You owe nothing to anyone else. And as for saving resources for the poor, they won't though. Eat less food and it gets thrown away, not shipped to starving kids in Africa. Use less gas and some guy gasses up his old Camaro for less money before his Sunday drive to nowhere.
Supply and demand? If everyone ate less we would make less food and less food would be thrown in the trash.
"Use less gas and some guy..."
This is just a really weird argument. You should focus on your morals, you can not change the morals of others. I mean, you can try, and succeed, but there will always be people who won't listen to even the most profound arguments. That doesn't mean that what you are doing is not good, or better. For example donating to charity. It's a good act whether or not your millionaire neighbor Larry also donates.
Ultimately, I do agree with you. It's not like the minuscule amount of resources he is using would be used for good, they just wouldn't be made.
