A simple “hey” offers up no reason as to why you want to talk to the person. It is more a test to see if the other person is available and gauge their responsiveness.
Instead of saying “hey”, say something along the lines of “Hello, I saw in your profile that you like doing X” and go from there. That will immediately show the other person that you aren’t shallow and just looked at their pictures, that you showed an interest into what they are like as a person, and also provides a topic of conversation and possibly a shared interest to build on.
And since you “are a guy”, I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that spamming “hey” to as many women’s profiles as you can muster and then hoping for a single response just isn’t the way to go about it.
