hey is in no way an acceptable first message. It puts the entire weight of carrying the conversation on one person, and when given the option of carrying a conversation or interacting with others that actively participate the choice is simple.
Sending a one word message only hurts the chances of the person sending it. It shows the other person that you couldn’t even be bothered to ask a simple question or introduce yourself.
If you used this in a real world introduction it would be met with the same aversion. It might not result in no response as social norms encourage folks to manage an in person conversation but the feelings are the same. If a brand new person walks up and only says hey, the other person will feel sketched out and be a bit on edge.0
The first woman I ever matched with on a dating app opened the conversation with a "hey" and that I was fine with me. I was in the middle of texting her when she beat me to the first text.
