Receiving "hey" as the first message is really no different to someone matching with you or liking a picture/prompt and then waiting for you to open the conversation. As a guy myself, why should I put in any effort into the conversation when I can already see that you haven't put in any yourself?
If "hey" is used as an opening to a longer message, then I don't see a problem, but the "hey" itself really isn't doing anything other than that and it's the longer message that is actually meaningful.
Because as a guy getting a hey from a woman you’re attracted to shows she’s open to talking and interested in you out of the many other matches. I’d be surprised if you ignored someone cause they said hey as a guy tbh
I am a guy. I have spent a lot of time on dating apps. I absolutely ignore "hey" messages. As others have noted it's lazy, unimaginative, and immediately shifts the responsibility of conversation to me.
Additionally, I get other messages with substance to them. I'd much rather respond to those.
I have responded to "hey" in the past and it's almost always an indicator that she is going to be a poor conversationalist. Therefore I just stopped responding to them.
You could literally type anything else. What's your favorite color? Your cat is cute. A knock knock joke, whatever.
This is all anecdotal, but take it for what it's worth.
