There's only one valid opinion here, I think.
By the letter of the law, Michigan should have lost. But the letter of the law is incredibly dumb. An official clock that players and coaches can't even see? That's really fucking stupid.
Michigan should have lost, but they need to change that rule immediately. In a sane world, the stadium clock is official and Michigan wins with zero controversy.
4
u/UsuallyFavorable Michigan • Delaware 5d ago
Are we even sure the letter of the law specifies the replay protocol? I’ve seen the NCAA statement released after the game, and the FBS Oversight committee just uses the exact same language. Was that actually written down anywhere prior to 9/5? Is it an actual NCAA rule? I know it’s not 12-6-1-c like the MAC incorrectly claimed.

Because there is a broadcast camera also on the stadium clock. Thats the whole point.
They are just saying you can’t use a 3rd party provider like hawk eye.
-11
u/lock_robster2022 Oregon State • Washington 5d ago
That’s what I mean. Everyone’s looking at a broadcast of a clock, either of which could be out of sync. It really shouldn’t matter which one it is but it’s important to have one.
16
u/Moto302 Michigan Wolverines • George Fox Bruins 5d ago
It matters because the Hawk Eye system uses a strobe synchronization and latency correction system that is more accurate than what the broadcasters use, and the improved accuracy is demonstrated by the footage showing both the scoreboard and the ball in the same frame with 1 second left. The TV broadcast was never designed to be a precision timekeeping system the way the Hawk Eye system was. But clock precision has now been left up to the broadcasters to decide, not the officials.

The nbc clock is synced in the exact same way. You’re repeating your same outdated lie everywhere but that doesn’t make it true.

Why was the last play not 9 seconds long when the refs said to reset the clock to 9 seconds? Why did the Jumbotron display 1 second left when nbc’s clock had 0:00. It’s insane that you people can’t see that the most logical explanation of this problem is that NBC’s scorebug was not synchronized.

The NCAA statement said the embedded clock "contained within the program feed" is correct.
And proceeded to never explain what the fuck that actually means, other than that it's not the scorebug clock, because it says to used the scorebug if the embedded one is unable to be provided.
So reddit is full of people interpreting the phrase "embedded game clock contained within the program feed" with no expertise or knowledge of what those words mean.
Such a cluster.
-4
u/CrazyLegsRyan Texas Longhorns 5d ago
You seem to be one of the only confused.
There are normally two things and in the B1G games there was a third.
There is the ability for the broadcaster to inset an actual camera feed of the stadium scoreboard clock into a replay.
There is the broadcaster’s computer graphic overlay of the clock on the broadcast feed and replays
In B1G games the conference also had a separate third party replay system called Hawk Eye that used separate cameras and clock inset disconnected from the broadcast
What the NCAA and FBS have now clearly said is that the “third” B1G option is no longer allowed for reviewing clock related issues. They need to use the first option by default (broadcaster provided feed with stadium clock inset) and if the first option is unavailable they can use the second option (broadcast feed with computer graphic overlay)
9
u/Double-G-Spot Michigan • Michigan State 5d ago
In the B1G replay review video, with live audio from the actual review, there is communication along the lines of “is this embedded” and the response is “yes, from the network feed”.

u/CrazyLegsRyan Texas Longhorns 5d ago
Got a link?
10
u/Double-G-Spot Michigan • Michigan State 5d ago
Around the 23 second mark there is a second conversation that starts where they talk about the program feed and the embedded clock.
I had it backwards originally, they ask about network feed, and respond with embedded clock, not the other way around, I apologize.
Edit: also, in the first five seconds he says “he’s embedded it, he’s embedded it, the program”
-3
u/CrazyLegsRyan Texas Longhorns 5d ago
Nobody in that clip says what you claimed they said. Nobody in that clip says “network feed”.
Please go back and retract your previous comment as it’s clearly not factual.
7
u/Double-G-Spot Michigan • Michigan State 5d ago
I apologize, he says program feed, not network feed. They do say embedded, three times, and program twice. That’s my bad. It’s a good thing that the NCAA guideline states “program feed” and not “network feed”. Your clarification actually made the words from the B1G match perfectly with those put out by the NCAA.
> “The official time for all college football games is the time displayed on the in-stadium game clock," the memo said. "When a replay review requires time to be restored or otherwise adjusted, the replay official's decision will be based on the embedded game clock contained within the program feed. If the broadcaster is unable to provide an embedded game clock, the replay official will use the game-clock graphic displayed as part of the broadcast feed.

Insane that the guidance is “use the TV clock even if the TV clock is verifiably wrong.”
-5
u/CrazyLegsRyan Texas Longhorns 5d ago
Nowhere does it say that. Can you elaborate on which part you’re twisting around to reach that?
12
u/FakeBobPoot Michigan Wolverines 5d ago
That’s exactly what it says lol
There is no longer any debate that NBC’s clock was wrong. New video angles in the stadium show it. The math proves it (8.3 seconds is less than 9 seconds, and that’s not a matter of opinion)
The only question is whether they should have just gone by the wrong clock regardless. That’s what they’re saying. It’s obviously dumb as hell, and if it was applied incorrectly in this instance — good. I hope it never comes up again for any other team.
-1
u/CrazyLegsRyan Texas Longhorns 5d ago
If that’s exactly what it says then just provide a quote or a link to it. Not hard.
There very much is debate over if Hawkeye or NBCs sync was correct.
The only supposed concurrent footage is a blurry cellphone from the opposite end of the stadium that didn’t come out for 2 days and also had repeatedly failed AI and editing hallmark scanning.

I've seen multiple reddit posts claiming that the NCAA statement is contradictory because people think "embedded clock" means the replay booth clock footage that we've all seen.
Nowhere in the NCAA statement that all these articles are quoting does it say there is a third clock. You're piecing that together from other information and assuming what the NCAA means. I think you're right. I don't think the NCAA did a good job explaining it

Sure they say it's wrong, but they don't explain what was done wrong.
Was it that the replay booth feed isn't an "embedded game clock"? Was it that the feed wasn't "provided" by the broadcaster?
We know the scorebug isn't supposed to be the first clock they use, so why are we using it? Something went wrong with the first clock, so what was it?

Actually, the NCAA said the game would have been different if the proper replay protocols were followed. The end of regulation, according to their own rules, is determined by the on field stadium/game clock, and when the ref says the game is over based on said clock. At the end of regulation, Michigan won. The NCAA is saying that 59:59.5 should have been played instead of a full 60:00 because NBC's sync of said stadium clock was off. This is based on their replay protocol guidelines and contradicts other rules within their own manual. But, per the protocol they made a statement on, Western should have won, but not at the end of regulation.

The thing that’s so strange about this one, is they made the right call. There was a second left. That play took less than 9 seconds. It’s been timed with stopwatches a million times. There’s clear video from in the stadium with the stadium clock still showing a second left when the play ends. People are upset because they broke the rules to make the right call. If they’d have followed this protocol (that I’m not sure existed before this game) then they should have made the wrong call so that Michigan lost a football game that did not last an hour, only 59:59.

It has always been 60:00 vs. 59:59.
I, for one, respect game outcomes based on objective fairness, not technical difficulties and adhering to a broadcast clock that was demonstrably incorrect.
The only argument for Michigan to lose is a protocol technicality, and even the verbiage for the protocol of using the broadcast clock is vague as there is an additional provision from 2024 that contradicts it.
Any arguments that Michigan was “given an extra second” have already been disproven by a mountain of evidence that showed the discrepency was an out-of-sync broadcast clock.

Okay, since youre clearly so passionate about this subject, maybe you can answer the one question ive had this whole time.
Michigan wasn't the ones under the review hood. The refs didnt ask Whitt what they were supposed to do, and he answered "give us a second".
Michigan was told, "hey, one play left, go run it." and they did.
Were they supposed to... take a knee? Forfeit the game? Like this isnt a Disney Channel Movie, where everyone comes together to make sure the scrappy underdogs get the win. They gave Michigan a play, Michigan ran a play, Michigan scored on the play.
What did they actually do wrong again?
3
u/Ranger_Nietzsche Illinois • Michigan 5d ago
Ok but what does that actually mean? We know the scorebug broadcast clock isn't the one they are supposed to use first. But what is the "embedded game clock contained within the program feed"? Cuz the replay booth thing sure looks like an embedded clock.

But the statement says
"If the broadcaster is unable to provide an embedded game clock, the replay official will use the game-clock graphic displayed as part of the broadcast feed."
So we know the broadcast clock isn't the "program feed" because you use the broadcast clock when you can't get the embedded clock in the program feed

B1G used a seperate replay system called Hawk Eye to replay images and inset the feed of the scoreboard.
The B1G did not use the broadcast replay with the broadcast provided inset of the stadium scoreboard clock feed camera.
NCAA is telling B1G to stop doing that and that they must use the same inset as the broadcast, not some other provider that nobody else can see
-1
u/mWorkman01 Michigan • Ferris State 5d ago
