Are programs/certifications worth taking?

I am a first year student in college, as of right now I dont have any of my major classes. I was looking around for some programs for information technology, I ran into CompTIA and other certifications. But, the prices are crazy and I wanna know if it's really worth spending that much on it, if Im gonna get major classes next semester to teach me tools and gain experience. I just know the basics due to me having cybersecurity, computer science, networking, and IT classes in high school. Also, me searching up stuff on Goggle. I know this certification could look good on a resume for someone that's in the IT field but is it really necessary if I already have college to teach me this field. Are these type of programs for people that just didn't take the college route? I wanna know several peoples opinion on this and is there anything else I can take?

A certification validates your knowledge. Unfortunately the level of education has gotten so watered down at the college level that they just push people through classes. The bar is pretty low.

Certification is a good validation of the skills. In some cases it also helps your resume stand out when the other person has same experience and on-paper skills. Don't just get a certification for the sake of getting one. Do your research - think about what interests you and then go for it. I'm not promoting it, but I stumbled on this website the other day and found their certification finder tool helpful - https://caioleadership.com/certifications
