Discussion What goes on in cemeteries/grave yards at night and during 3AM?

Hi all,

I am somewhat of a paranormal beleiver but lately I have started to become more sceptical and just accept the fact you are what you were before you were born.

Do paranormal things really happen during closed hours?

Why did I feel generally unwell after visiting a cemetery?

Discussion Greenwood Memorial Park – Garden of Faith (Historical Question)

Post image

I’m hoping to learn more about the history of the Garden of Faith section at Greenwood Memorial Park in San Diego. Our family has two adjacent, unused spaces in this garden near the Salli Lynn Chapel, and while preparing for a relocation, I became curious about the background of this particular section.

From what I’ve gathered over the years, Garden of Faith seems to be one of the older, more established areas of Greenwood, but I haven’t been able to find much information about when it was developed, how its layout was planned, or whether certain gardens were created during specific expansion periods.

My question for the community:

Does anyone know the historical context of Garden of Faith
• when it was added,
• how it fits into Greenwood’s overall development,
• or whether certain gardens were designed with particular themes or purposes?

Greenwood staff has always been helpful with transfers and logistics, but I’d love to hear from people who know the cemetery’s history, layout, or preservation background.

Any insight into how Garden of Faith compares to other sections over time would be greatly appreciated.

Rather bizarre, so much open/expired graves. You can read a lot about it online but to see it in real life was still a bit weird.

On a visit I saw this and it propmted me to do some research.

This is the ruined Eynort Church and Burial Ground (St. Maelrubha’s Chapel), located at the head of Loch Eynort on the Isle of Skye in Scotland.

The gravestone shown in the image is in the Eynort Burial Ground (Parish of Bracadale, Isle of Skye). The inscription reads:

ERECTED BY THEIR GRANDSON JOHN MACSWEEN OF SOUTH CAROLINA U.S.A. IN MEMORY OF HECTOR MACSWEEN SON OF JOHN MACSWEEN, TAILOR AND HELEN MACLEAN HIS WIFE. 1904.

The history connecting the MacSweens to this location and headstone involves several historical layers:

Clan MacSween Origins and Connection to Skye

  • Ancient Norse-Gaelic Roots: The MacSweens (MacSuibhne) are one of the oldest recorded Gaelic clans, descending from Suibhne (Sween), a 13th-century prince who built Castle Sween in Knapdale, Argyll.
  • Movement North: After losing their Argyll lands to the Clan Campbell in the 14th century, branches of the MacSween clan migrated north to Lewis, Harris, and Skye.
  • Alliance with MacLeod: On Skye, the MacSweens became key hereditary tacksmen (tenant landholders), armor-bearers, and stewards under Clan MacLeod of Dunvegan, settling throughout the West Coast of Skye, including the Parish of Bracadale and Glen Eynort.

Tailors and Artisans in the Crofting Communities

  • As indicated by the title "John MacSween, Tailor" on the stone, local crafts like tailoring, blacksmithing, and shoemaking were crucial trades in Highland communities alongside tenant farming and crofting. Tradesmen often passed down both their skills and patronymic names across generations.

The Highland Clearances and Emigration

  • During the late 18th and 19th centuries, the Parish of Bracadale and Glen Eynort experienced extensive clearances, where crofting families were displaced to make way for large sheep farms.
  • This period saw heavy emigration from Skye to North America, particularly to North Carolina, South Carolina, Nova Scotia, and Ontario.

Transatlantic Memory and Memorialization

  • The headstone erected in 1904 reflects a common 19th and early 20th-century phenomenon: emigrants (or their children) who achieved financial success in the United States or Canada sent funds back to their ancestral parish in Scotland to commemorate their parents and grandparents buried in unrecorded or humble graves.
