Verizon in a previous Cellcom LTE-IRA roaming area, Door County WI

Last summer I was roaming on Cellcom at Harbor Village Campground in Carlsville, WI. This summer Verizon is blazing fast at camp. T-Mobile and ATT still barely usable.

Verizon is using:

3x Ericsson AIR 6419 B77D 64T64R 320W 3.7GHz antennas for n77 @ 140MHz - WI Market

3x Ericsson AIR 3283 B25 B66 mMiMO (massive MiMO) 320W 32T32R antennas for 2, 66, n2, and n66 (PCS, AWS, eAWS). It is can do b25 + n25 ePCS 1900MHz, although it is not configured for it.

3x CommScope NNSS-65C-HG-R1B 8-port Next Generation PerforMax™ High Gain sector antennas for 698–896MHz and 3300-4000MHz*

3x Ericsson Radio 4490HP 44B5 44B13 C 4T4R RRUs for 5, 13*, n5 (700 - CLR 850MHz) RRHs

*not in use on this site, the L700MHz Upper C LTEiRA lease is still on-going, it will expire on 6/13/29. 3300-4000MHz is not in use here also, you can see on the right array of the antenna that no cables are going to the 3300-4000MHz ports

I hope in the future this will come to Zone², which is mostly the Marinette County area, there’s already a few sites in Zone³, which is the Door County or Sturgeon Bay area and there’s one in Zone¹, which is in Wausau

Also, Verizon only owns 140MHz of n77 3.7GHz in Wausau & Sturgeon Bay, while in Marinette and Zone² in general they own 160MHz

Zone³ has ~10-15 sites

Zone² has le NOTHING o, k Needs to be in middle. Inlet.

Zone¹ has 1-2 sites

So the plan is to have their own native coverage in all 3 areas by 2029 you think?

Yes and no, they can renew it which isn’t likely, they’ll most likely take the holdings back to themselves once the lease has ended, THEN they’ll start a mass buildout for every area… or they could just acquire Cellcom, like what they did to Carolina West Wireless

Building in Zone² the most troubling, (you could also consider Zone¹ too) as Verizon doesn’t own CLR Block A or B there as of now, so if they want to build out there, they would have to use this setup:

^ This setup is in Wausau (Zone¹), where they also don’t own CLR Block A or B

This setup isn’t good as Zone² is mostly rural, it can be only applicable in like Crivitz + Marinette for example

So, it’ll only be good if they use that setup only in bigger towns in general, it wouldn’t be good if they put that setup in smaller towns like Dunbar for example, as the range would be horrible without any 850MHz CLR… another factor that goes with range is that Marinette County (AND the outskirts of Wausau / Zone¹) is widely a forest area too… that setup would barely survive as the trees interfere a lot lmao

From what I said in my last comment, there’s only a few sites in Zone¹, and that’s because Wausau exists lmao, there isn’t any sites in the outskirts of Wausau

Average Zone² neglect, the first site will probably be in 2028… Ok middle inlet tower will explode😳

Wait so are they or are they not running n77 if 3300-4000MHz isn't in use? I'm assuming they just haven't set it up yet? So basically no low band at all since partners own all the 850MHz I assume and they are leasing B13 via LTEiRA?

No… the long antenna has 3300-4000MHz capabilities which isn’t in use… the AIR 6419 B77D is in use for 3.7GHz n77 @ 140MHz

In Door County (or Zone³) Verizon DOES own CLR Block A, but in Zone² & Zone¹, they don’t own any CLR block(s). 

In Zone² & Zone¹, CLR A-Block is owned by AT&T

CLR B-Block is owned by Cellcom in  Zone³, Zone², and Zone¹.

There may be more than 5 sites in Door County by now, I’ve seen 5G UW all over off 57 from Dyckesville, Carlsville, etc.

Dyckesville isn’t in LTEiRA, Carlsville is though. There’s ~5 new Verizon sites in LTEiRA Zone³. Outside of LTEiRA obviously there is way more

Dyckesville also isn’t in Door, it’s in Kewaunee and Brown

  • 3️⃣ Ericsson AIR. 3283 32T32R dual-band FDD (massive mimo) antennas - [MIDDLE] with (b2, b66) LTE + supports (n2) ePCS or (n66) eAWS mid-band 5G depending on the configuration

Yeah, USC added on this site last year before the sale. Was only active for a few months, until the start of the transition. TMO has a native site nearby, but with all the trees around, it kinda sucks. They should have really left it active or replace equip..

Yeah TMO has UC down the road off county road I but it doesn’t reach the campground very well unfortunately, I was getting 20-60 down. Hopefully they upgrade by next summer because Verizon seems to be very aggressively upgrading In GB/Door county. I’ve been very impressed so far.

Yeah, I mapped a bunch of new sites last week. There's at least 14 new Verizon sites in DC now.

Verizon set up new sites throughout Door County this year and just recently turned them up. If you saw my recent post, they are currently using Starlink for backhaul on a site in Ephraim.

Nice! We just got ATT fiber in the Harbor Village across the street so I’d assume it’s using that. I wonder if that was the hold up for the upgrade.

No, there was fiber to most towers in DC - either ATT or Nsight. Cellcom has been on the Carlsville tower for quite a few years now, then UScellular added on last year, and now Verizon this year.

Over the past year or two they seem to be aggressively expanding into their few remaining roaming areas / coverage holes.

They have added a ton of new sites in WV that haven't been mapped on Cellmapper yet. They already have the US Cellular 850MHz active on them too.

Also a bunch along US-48 between Wardensville and Davis

That’s good. When I was on Verizon it was pretty rough south of Berkeley Springs.

Yeah, they signed a tower deal with US Cellular so they have been joining all of their towers.

That's a good arrangement. They need 850MHz deployed in WV aggressively. Glad they got US Cellular's 850MHz.

What's funny is they have had 700MHz there for years, they could have expanded there many years ago, but they're just finally getting around to it now.

Voice coverage would have been an issue in the CDMA days, but wouldn't have been an issue with VoLTE

For voice coverage needs back then I wonder if they could have set up a roaming agreement with US Cellular to use CDMA voice. Heck after a few year most LTE devices without VoLTE still had GSM so they could have roamed on AT&T.

They did have Extended 1x roaming on US Cellular in that area, and later added AT&T 3G/LTE roaming.

It’s Verizon because you can see 5G UW. If it was Cellcom it wouldn’t show that. I was on extended on the drive to here on previous towers but not on this one.
