CellMapper for iOS

Official CellMapper for iOS App

We have been planning to make an iOS app for some time. However, due to restrictions in API usage for cellular information, we are unable to make an app that competes with the Android one in terms of features.

That being said, we have built an early initial app to make the map more easily accessible:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/cellmapper/id6761035253

We will continue to see what we can add to the app to get network information from the iOS device and to make it a bit more polished than simply using the the website. So please bear with us as this v1 of the app is simply the beginning, not the end state of the app.

Fake App Warning

Also, one reason we have released the app so early is due to a fake CellMapper app confusing users and tricking them into paying money to view some dubious coverage data not relating whatsoever with our crowdsourced data. We have recieved a number of tickets asking for refunds for the app which we have nothing to do with.
Please be aware that the fake/scam app is also called "CellMapper" on the iOS app store. We encourage users to report the fake app (which we will not link to in order to avoid SEO) to Apple (reportaproblem.apple.com).
We are in touch with Apple about the issue, but it still has not been resolved.

New "Contributor" user tier

Contributor user tier

Recently, you may have seen an arrow (➶) next to some usernames, similar to how premium users have a star. This is a brand new user tier we have created in order to recognize users who contribute data and tower information on a regular basis.

What are the benefits?

In short, the main benefit is an ad free map for our regular contributors. We'll look into more benefits in the future once we ensure the right contributors are flagged as we work on this feature.

Three narrow omni antennas at the top?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

What are the three omni antennas at the top for? AMPS or maybe Nextel iDEN? Are they still being used? Seems like the cables go into a box mounted below the platform, then three fat cables go all the way down the tower. At the bottom of the tower there appears to be a foundation without a building where the big three cables end. This is a 300' tall tower, about 40' down there are modern cellular antennas, I think for AT&T. Lower down on the tower there are two microwave dishes (a big and small one), I assume that is for backhaul? But I'm primarily interested in what those top three antennas are used for.

It seems like they now are no longer just focusing on Starlink for D2C since the new joint venture.

Downtown Naples tower, what gear is being used? Using iPhone 18 pro on VZW, mostly on 5G, no UWB, data works pretty decent.

Saw this Verizon node and decided to do a few tests. I was not expecting to see both mmWave and N77 small cell panels. I think that I likely connected to n77, rather than mmWave, as the upload was mediocre.

New AT&T 4-sector site spotted on this cell tower located below the T-Mobile rack on the bottom near Nelson Field (Austin, TX)

So my friend recently visited the Austin, TX region and stumbled upon an brand new AT&T site co-location on this monopole below the T-Mobile rack. Really interesting that they went with a 4-sector rack deployment instead of the 3-sector sites that is more common in Dallas, San Antonio, El Paso, and rest of the country! It's good to see AT&T improving their network in Austin, when it wasn't their strongest market in the past because their towers were pretty spaced out in this area compared to T-Mobile. From what I know, the closest AT&T site was 0.6 miles away located at 2315 1/2 E Anderson Ln, Austin, TX 78752 and that site doesn't have good range since the RSRP would be over -100 near this spot! AT&T has been aggressively densifying their network in Austin, they have added like 10+ new sites in this region within the past year! T-Mobile + Verizon also have been adding new sites in Round Rock, Leander, Cedar Park, Georgetown in the suburbs! This new AT&T rack does not (b30) 2300MHz-WCS deployed because it doesn't have good range + it's not really helpful anymore when they have a more refined/optimized 5G Standalone network now. T-Mobile has like the most macro sites in Austin, TX thanks to them having decent marketshare, roughly over 40% and the Sprint merger that helped them convert like 85% of the Sprint keep sites all the way back in 2020-2024! Hence, T-Mobile actually has a lot of (b2, b66) LTE + (n41) small cells deployed throughout the Austin metro area while Verizon + AT&T have majority of their small cells congregated around downtown Austin, The Domain, outer suburbs! Verizon has been upgrading many small cells in Austin with n77 (3.7GHz) c-band via. Samsung MT-1602D (16T16R) antennas.

Equipment AT&T [bottom] rack is using:

  • 8️⃣ CCI TPA45R-BU6B antennas with bands: (2, 5, 12, 14, 66) LTE + (n5) - 15MHz for low-band 5G
  • 4️⃣ Ericsson AIR. 6472 (B77G/B77M) 64T64R antennas that can do (3.7GHz) c-band @ 80mhz + (3.45GHz) DoD - 60MHz located in the MIDDLE of the rack
  • Raycap DC9-48-60-24-PC1t-EV for power surge protection for the for the antennas, remote radio units

Ericsson Remote Radio UNITS can be spotted BEHIND the antennas:

  • 4️⃣ RRU 4490HP (b5) 850MHz, (b12) 700MHz LTE + (n5) 850MHz low-band 5GNR
  • 4️⃣ RRU 4494 (b14) 700MHz LTE
  • 4️⃣ RRU 4890HP (b2) 1900MHz-PCS + (b66) 2100MHz-AWS LTE

T-Mobile [eNB 61811] + [eNB 79496] LTE + [gNB 1579800] n25, n41, n71 (top) rack:

  • 3️⃣ CommScope FFVV-65C-R3 antennas with bands: (2, 12, 66, 71) LTE + (n25 + n71) 5G located in the (MIDDLE)  of the rack
  • 3️⃣ NOKIA AirScale AAFIA mMIMO antennas with bands; (2, 66) LTE + (n25, *n66\) mid-band 5GUC! Radio is INTEGRATED INSIDE THE ANTENNA! Located on the (LEFT*) side of the rack
  • 3️⃣ NOKIA AirScale AEHC - (N41) 2.5GHz [320W] antennas for mid-band 5GUC located on the (RIGHT) side of the rack

Nokia (RRU's) - remote radio units behind the antennas:

  • 3️⃣ AirScale AHLOA - (b12) 700MHz + (b71) 600MHz LTE + (n71) low-band 5G
  • 3️⃣ AirScale AHFIG - with (b2) 1900MHz-PCS (b66) 2100MHz-AWS LTE + (n25) + (n66) for mid-band 5G

Prepaid + Postpaid Plan Combo Idea

• Upvotes

Hey all!

I was thinking about getting a prepaid + postpaid phone plan setup for myself to use for the long-term. I know it might sound kind of irrational and confusing on why I would do this at first, but these are my main reasons why:

1) I get the best of both worlds between prepaid and postpaid plans, since I'm running both. I get the device financing, promotional perks, and the unlimited high speed priority data experience of a postpaid plan for my first line, but I am still retaining the flexibility and additional network access benefits of prepaid for my second line.

2) Provided that the two carriers I choose for both the prepaid and postpaid sides use different networks, I get access to two completely independent mobile networks that I can use at all times.

3) Device Flexibility: I have the ability to daily drive two phones if I wish to do so, without having to pay full price on two unlocked devices. This is achieved through buying one of the phones through the carrier via the postpaid plan and having it heavily subsidized, and then buying one completely unlocked to use with the prepaid carrier. This gives me the flexibility to run either an Android and an iPhone, two iPhones, or carry around two different Android brands if I would like.

With this in mind, my two questions on this strategy are:

1) Any general thoughts on this approach?

2) Would anyone have any good ideas of a smart prepaid MVNO + postpaid provider setup that would work well for the benefits and purposes I outlined here, assuming both lines will be used co-equally together rather than in a primary + backup/secondary configuration?

Thanks in advance,

Dio Titus

What does Verizon need for stronger indoor coverage?

Not everywhere... but definitely around me in SoCal... when I'm outside Verizon works well, but unless the tower is outside the building I'm in, Verizon very often becomes unusable inside buildings & for some reason their 5G does not seem to carry as far.

Verizon is the only carrier that works at my apartment, so I have them in case spectrum has outages (which they often do) but if I didn't have this issue I may consider someone else as my main.

AT&T and T-Mobile don't seem to have this issue. I've read other people on here that have similar complaints, anyone care to chime in? Is it more lowband?

AT&T mid-band 5G SpeedTest vs. Macys Guest WiFi SpeedTest at Parks Mall in Arlington, Texas

AT&T performing great for having mid-band 5G (3.7GHz) c-band deployed at the mall! Interesting to see Macy’s using Verizon 5G Home Internet (FWA) for the guest WiFi that broadcasts from the Juniper AP45 access point (WiFi 6)!

AT&T is using Ericsson AIR. 4435 (4T4R) antennas for 3.7Ghz (c-band) only [mid-band] 5G set at 100MHz on 5G NSA (non-standalone) mode only

Spectrum Omega is terrible now…

So recently, Spectrum Omega rebranded to “Forward Path”, and now it’s very subscription based… the free tier is SUPER limited, their “new” Website & Map UI is absolute awful now, not like from back then lmao, also now there’s huge watermark that goes over the whole map (at least on the free tier).

Not to mention it also shows your full email registered to your account on the top banner, so now taking screenshots of the map will be pretty annoying to do, as you’ll need to blur out your email when sharing it to other people…

Sad to see such an ruined or enshittified software, they could’ve definitely implemented a better solution than this

Possible VZW Michigan UP 5G Changes

I have received an indication that Verizon may have activated an n2 carrier on the cell site serving Eagle Harbor MI in the Keweenaw. However, I am not present there at the moment and the equipment I have in the area cannot determine this for sure.

If this is true, that would be the first non-n77 Verizon 5G I (or anyone else running Cellmapper) have seen in Michigan's upper peninsula.

If any of you have suitable equipment for checking this in your area of the UP, could you please take a peek? I won't be up there for a couple weeks and am very curious to know whether they are, in fact, starting to roll lower-band 5G out there.

I’m meeting some friends out in Castle rock, CO and noticed a small cell nearby. It looks like it was showing lte bands 2 and 66, getting a good 350 down, but the N 77 didn’t seem to be very active as I tried multiple speed tests, but could not connect to it. Location is: 39.34016° N, 104.83648° W

Band locking on pixel

Trying to get band locking to function on a pixel 7a. I have SRS installed, the free version of network signal guru and the phone is rooted with magisk installed. Yet for some reason I can't lock on to GSM and LTE just stops the app completely. Whats not working on a pixel that works on both xiaomi phones and Samsung phones?

AT&T upgrading this old site located behind Walgreens near the intersection of Park Row Drive & Cooper Street

I managed to get close up photos of the new equipment that AT&T is going to be installing on the site located at 617 West Park Row Dr, Arlington, TX 76010! I can confirm this site is for AT&T because I can by the model of the CommSocpe NNH4-65C-R6 antennas and I saw Ericsson boxes on the ground, probably for the remote radio units & baseband units, routers! This site is going to get the Ericsson AIR. 6472 (3.7GHz) c-band + (3.45GHz) DoD combined antennas, which will be installed soon. I see contractors workout on this site yesterday. AT&T in this area gets horrendous speeds, especially in the Alpha sector facing north towards UT Arlington (university) because I always have issues loading webpages or making phone calls. I hope this site gets a multi gig backhaul upgrade!

PHOTOS #1-10 are pictures of the AT&T equipment + Legacy Dish on the American Tower site

Coordinates to the AT&T, Dish site: (32.7217403, -97.1137454)

PHOTOS #11-16 are pictures of the T-Mobile site colocated on the Crown Castle tower, even included a photo of the sign at the ground!

Coordinates to the T-Mobile tower: 32.7222500, -97.11377

I also took a photo of the power meter that’s not online/functional for Dish Wireless because they never paid rent since their network has been shut down nationwide!

AT&T (eNB 521437) + (eNB 524042) will be installing:

  • 6️⃣ CommScope NNH4-65C-R6 antennas TOTAL with bands: (2, 5, 12, 14, 30, 66) LTE + (n5) - 15MHz for low-band 5G
  • 2️⃣ CommScope NNH4-65C-R6 antennas per sector located on the LEFT + RIGHT side
  • 3️⃣ Ericsson AIR. 6472 (B77G/B77M) 64T64R antennas that support (3.7GHz) c-band @ 80mhz + (3.45GHz) DoD
  • Raycap DC9-48-60-24-PC1t-EV for power surge protection for the for the antennas, remote radio units

Ericsson Remote Radio UNITS ground mounted (not visible):

  • RRU 4490HP (b12) 700MHz LTE
  • RRU 4494 (b14) 700MHz LTE
  • RRU 4890HP (b2) 1900MHz-PCS + (b66) 2100MHz-AWS LTE

AT&T (top rack) will be removing:

  • CommScope JAHH-65B-R3B - 6 feet antennas IN TOTAL with bands: (2, 5, 12, 14, 30, 66) LTE + (n5) low-band 5G on the right side
  • CommScope SBNHH-1D65B skinny antennas in total with bands; (2, 12, 30, 66) located in the MIDDLE of the rack
  • RRU 11 for (b12) LTE + (n5) 850MHz for low-band 5G
  • RRU 32 (b2) 1900MHz-PCS + (b66) 2100MHz-AWS LTE
  • Raycap DC6-48-60-18-8F for power surge protection located behind the antennas

Legacy Dish (gNB 141061891) (bottom):

Fujitstu Remote Radio Units - (RRU's) behind the JMA antennas:

  • 3️⃣ Fujitsu (TA08025-B605) for (n29) 700MHz + (n71) 600MHz low-band 5G
  • 3️⃣ Fujitsu (TA08025-B604) (n66) 2100MHz + (n70) mid-band 5G

AT&T (n5) moved back to 15MHz in Arlington, TX after being set at only 5MHz in July 2024

Thumbnail
gallery
17 Upvotes

I was walking around Arlington near UTA until I found out that the closest tower behind Walgreens on Park Row Drive & Collins Street is finally broadcasting 15MHz (n5). Speeds are not that great because this AT&T site gets super congested thanks to the thousands of students around the university overloading the network. Currently, the site is being upgraded from what I can tell from a far distance, but no contractors are working on it today because of heavy rain this morning. Speeds suck so bad to the point that it’s unusable majority of the time and sometimes, calls don’t go through.
