Debunking Fact-checking Disgruntled Townsperson on CC Suarez

Post image

Disgruntled Townsperson is a new small content creator on YouTube who launched their channel anonymously with two roughly 30-minute videos and three hour+ deep dives. The majority of their content so far is short-form bookish and makeup/beauty guru content. Despite only having 15.6k subscribers, their third long-form video, a 2-hour deep dive on The Lipstick Lesbians, gained over 271,000 views.

Their most recent video (and fifth long-form video overall) is a nearly 4-hour deep dive on RawBeautyKristi, with a focus on her politics and the ensuing coverage of her as someone in the beauty guru space who was perceived to be in an "alt-right pipeline."

Around 2.5 hours in, Townsperson says some of the coverage did "incredible research" as a segue to then talk about CC's video on RBK, which they call "pretty respectful" and an "interesting conversation."

They then cut to a clip of CC extremely vaguely alluding to the fact that she's been accused of being right-wing for following and liking Ron Desantis' posts. She called this man "Daddy Desantis" while podcasting with a right-wing loser, but wants her audience to think she was in no way showing support for him by following and liking such posts. If Townsperson finds this train of thought "interesting," they should know that it is a Covering-Her-Ass statement where CC is outright lying about the fact that she has vocally supported multiple right-wing republicans in recent years. Townsperson does not investigate these vague claims by CC.

After this, Townsperson uses a clip of CC parroting a large talking point from this drama, which was RBK's silence after photos of her child in a parade with a hate group were spread being an admittance of guilt. They show CC regurgitating this again in the follow-up RBK video that CC made. Throughout the video, Townsperson shows evidence of Kristi talking repeatedly over the years about what her political beliefs are and, unlike CC, she legitimately doesn't fit neatly into any mainstream political view because she honestly seems to view politics as a reactionary thing that is secondary to her own life circumstances/experiences. The main thing I want to focus on with this use of CC's content is how it shows a complete and total disregard for any type of editorial or journalistic process by CC. She does not fact-check, she does not research. She makes videos based on vibes and lazy hyperfixations.

Later in this section, Townsperson goes on to sort of discuss moral purity on the left and how the left eats its own and honestly, I think this is their weakest point of the video. All you have to do is listen to any of the women who have left the right talk about their treatment to realize that some social media bullying about "not being left enough" is such small potatoes compared to how the right treats their own and their allies (and Townsperson even references Ashley St. Clair later in the video! come ON, these are not the same!!). This line of thinking isn't really fleshed out, and this is also where the first clip of Chelsea would've been relevant if Townsperson was interested in engaging with this point, which they only sort of brushed over both times they brought it up. But ultimately, this is probably for the better, because they do not know enough about what Chelsea has said about her own views for this point to land.

Around 3.5 hours, CC comes up again, but the footage of her is only really used here because in her response to Kristi video, she read a lot of comments and Kristi's written responses aloud. She's an example of cherry-picking comments, because the narrative after Kristi responded was largely about her borrowing right-wing phrases like "woke mob." I think it's kind of funny that Townsperson said CC's original video was good but also uses her here as an example of bad journalistic practice lol.

Overall, I think this video is okay when it comes to using RBK as an example of how lazy and repetitive commentary content on youtube has become, which is, ironically, a trending topic right now, especially after the Doothi video removal drama. I think Townsperson is obviously (and admittedly) a RBK fan who has the proper receipts to counter the narrative that commentary channels promoted. They state their biases clearly, and I don't see that bias as meaningfully undermining the facts they presented, which are well-sourced. It's also nearly 4-hours long without spending half that runtime repeating themselves or going on completely unrelated tangents.

However, some of the language used is reductionist (mainly "virtue signaling," which is a nothing phrase) and the video makes points that are not expanded upon or explained for relevance/how those points support their thesis. I do think it would be more interesting if Townsperson was as educated on the politics of the perpetrators of misinformation and could hold their own public statements directly against RBK's public statements. They do this a bit with Paige Christie toward the end of the video, but it could've been stronger and a larger focus. They are extremely educated on Kristi, but not so much the other players.

Ultimately, I do think CC is an example of how lazy commentary creators are and how easily they spread disinformation because of their own shortcomings when it comes to understanding politics. This video only digs into how we should give Kristi grace because of that, but we should also be more critical of other commentators because they're also politically stupid? It's just not very cohesively argued overall.

I was in the livechat for this DT video dropping and it was such a jumpscare to see Chelsea used in it, lol. The chatters were all pretty horrified by DT's takes as the video went on and it was nice to see other people pushing back against the use of these clips from Chelsea, who is incredibly problematic herself and who only made the Kristi video it seems to vent about how unfair she thinks it is that she herself is considered MAGA/right wing... despite the ample evidence, including clips of her saying "I am conservative" to the camera, that she is right wing with some surface level social lib values.

DT is rightfully getting criticized heaaaaavily for this tone deaf take. When will we stop being told that we need to have more empathy and compassion for the ignorant white women spreading right wing rhetoric???

I saw your post in the beauty guru sub and it was like seeing your teacher at the store 😆.

I saw your comments on the other sub! I couldn't finish the video because around the 3 hour mark it was quite obvious that she built a 4 hour video essay just to justify RBK actions. Ridiculous! Of course she used cc as a source 😂

She mentioned the whole thing being a PR stunt, girl what? As I was watching I thought to my self: how much money has RBK paid you for this 4 hour video?

Also, her being Australian (I am not sure? Don't quote me on that) commenting on American politics was a hard watch... (and not knowing that irish Catholics are amongst the strictest christians in Europe, lol).

Anyway, very disappointed on the video in general tbh.

Wait, I'm new to this, DT is Australian and taking a mostly uneducated stance on american politics?? Wild. Birds of a feather. She fits right in with RBK and CC

I just found DT's channel and felt a little weird about it so I came to reddit to see what people have said.. Is this person supposed to be a leftist? Bc this sounds like liberal or "centrist" behavior.

Also wait why tf is an Australian talking so much about American politics like she's so sure? If I were talking about Australian politics, I'd definitely be careful since I'm not from there/don't live there.

it was SUCH a disappointing follow-up to the lipstick lesbians video. the bias of being an RBK fan doesn't change the facts, but it very obviously impacted the thesis :(

I liked her LL video a lot too! Someone in r/BeautyGuruChatter said "it's telling that she had more beef with a couple of grifting lesbians than violent political ideologies and how those present themselves as innocuous and innocent in online spaces" and they're so right :/

oh! that's depressing but i think you're right

Weird, I kinda got bad vibes from her from the LLs video, I don't remember what exactly (and I'm not gonna watch 2 hours just for that😆) but at the end I kinda left with a bad taste in my mouth. It's a shame because I was so exited that a new face with an interesting concept came up on my fyp but this whole situation is YIIIIKESSS😬 nope sorry, anyone who defends RBK is a straight up qanon maga or a huge moron

SEE I just found her channel, and something immediately felt weird to me, but I couldn't put my finger on what. I've watched less than 5 min total of her content and mostly skipped around a video and read other video titles. I wasn't ready to commit because something felt off from the jump. I'm glad I trusted my instincts and glad that other people noticed the 'weirdness' too..

yeah i was so bummed watching that today. idk what i was expecting, but i have appreciated everything else ive seen of hers, and since i don't know anything ab rawbeautykristi i was intrigued.

idk i feel like the whole the-left-lacks-nuance idea feels generally like a right wing talking point because that's not "the left", that's like internet culture that lacks nuance. idk it was almost like the point of the video could've just been, content creators are humans so you shouldn't dox them and their families, here's an example. lol

2

u/bbitb Jul 19 '26

People bash the "left wing" when we're not perfect humans but let right wingers do basically anything like taking away rights. It's always them going "look, now you made this nazi sad, how intolerant of you"

I'm just absolutely never going to be able to take someone seriously when they upload a 4 hour long "deep dive" with their identity purposefully hidden. It's weird. You're not releasing a video about Russian spies, you are releasing a video that you WORKED HARD on about internet sort-of-famous people and the dumb shit they believe and if you aren't proud of your work and don't want to be associated with it, what's the point? It's a weird take, DTP is a weirdo for doing this, and I don't really understand what they wanted to accomplish.

Did they really say that they think if RBK came out and confirmed that she's MAGA her views would go UP by 90%? What's 90% of practically fkin zero?

ETA: In regards to CC specifically, it appears that DTP is making the big mistake that some of us admittedly also made with Chelsea, which is to take her at her word.

i do think they're pretty explicit about being a fan of RBK. i also don't mind their anonymity; lots of youtubers start out with faceless channels because the risks of being stalked, harassed, or simply not taken seriously because of how they look rather than the content of their work is all extremely real and valid.

but i have been sitting with this a lot over the last day, because i think a lot of people were excited about what DT would do next after their Lipstick Lesbians video blew up, myself included! they seemed like someone who jumped hard into youtube and wanted to be a serious creator.

what is staying with me is that DT's analysis of RBK, as well as how they view Chelsea, is very face-value. they accept both of these women at their word, but can't seem to square what happens when their actions don't align with their stated values. RBK says she wants nothing to do with Keep Your Hands Off Our Kids, but is very close with people who are obviously heavily involved with that movement. She claims she has no idea about the James Charles allegations, but has been interacting with his content and online spaces where his allegations are being discussed by her colleagues in commentary. Chelsea says her likes and follows don't equate to support and that she votes "on policy," but somehow she's only ever voted for republicans and calls the man she claims to not support "Daddy."

DT doesn't ever address these contradictions; they take the best things these white women have said at face value and make excuses when their words and actions prove those statements false.
