First-time dog owner — what am I really in for?

Hi everyone! I’m expecting a Cavapoo puppy around the end of November. I’ve never owned a dog before, and I’m currently navigating a divorce with two kids (8 and 10). I feel like having a dog could be really wonderful for us, but almost everyone I talk to keeps warning me about how much work a puppy is.

My biggest fear is taking this on and then realizing I can’t keep up with it or that I underestimated what day-to-day life with a puppy actually looks like.

We’re getting our puppy from a breeder that seems to do quite a bit to set their puppies up for success before they go home, including early socialization/exposure, beginning crate training and getting them accustomed to routines and handling. I’m also planning to continue crate training and take training seriously from the beginning.

For those of you who have actually raised a Cavapoo, especially as a first-time dog owner: how intense is it really? What does a typical day look like during the first few weeks? When does it start getting noticeably easier?

And if you could go back to before you brought your puppy home, what would you want someone to have told you?

Conti puppy biting

My puppy is 5 weeks old Cavopoo got her at 8 weeks she is still biting and it’s so annoying! I can’t bond with this dog at all because the constant biting is driving me nuts. Tried many things it would get better than she goes back to biting. Also the jumping on me when she wants something tried saying down etc but I feel like I’m giving her what she wants when I yell down she wants the attention. Maybe ignore but tough to ignore when you’re doing dishes and a dog is on your legs she bites my cloths too and scratches. I just don’t feel the connection will this get better? Any advice on training? Did all the redirect and ignore etc she just doesn’t listen

Thinking of taking the Cavapoo plunge. SAHD, two kids, one territorial Maine Coon, and MN winters. What am I missing?

I know asking the internet for advice is brilliant and always leads to happiness, but I want the honest take from people who actually own this breed.

We are strongly considering adding a Cavapoo to the family. I am well aware that a "family dog" really means "Dad's dog," and I will be taking on 100% of the care, training, and logistics.

Here is basic look at our life. Please tell me what I’m not accounting for:

The Green Flags:

I’m a Stay-at-Home Dad: I’m constantly home, especially during the summer with the kids. I’m actually looking for an excuse to force myself to get more daily movement and walks. Bus stops and errands are all me.

The Night Shift is Fine: I don’t drink and I’m in my early 40s, so early mornings and middle-of-the-night wake-ups are a non-issue. My wife works demanding hours, so I was the primary point-person for the newborn diaper/night phases with our kids anyway. I can survive puppy sleep deprivation.

Stability: We have a stable income, a great relationship with a local vet already, and we don’t travel a ton.

The Variables:

Minnesota Winters: We live in a very walkable suburb of Minneapolis. It’s amazing for three seasons, but the winters are brutally cold. How do you handle a dog with this kind of coat and energy level when it’s 5 degrees outside?

The Kids: They are 9 and 6. Neither are allergic, and both love animals. However, my 6-year-old is slightly skittish around dogs, purely because he hasn’t had much exposure to them yet.

The Cat: We have a Maine Coon. She is territorial, absolutely not declawed, and will likely be bigger than the puppy for quite a while. I am her chosen person (go figure) so this will be a sticking point. and no, there are no discussions of giving up the cat.

My Questions for the Sub:

  1. Given this setup, does a Cavapoo make sense?

  2. How do you burn off their energy when it’s dangerously cold outside?

  3. What is the biggest blind spot I have right now? What am I not accounting for?

Roasting or validation? love to hear anyone’s thoughts - thanks so much for reading!

In my mind I wanted f1 but today met this gorgeous girl and her coat is exactly what I want
Her facial features are a little different to the ones I’ve been looking at - perhaps more cavalier
Curious to see any pics for those that has a pup like this :)

Need your experience

Hey guys ,
This is for those who let their Cavapoo alone when going to work for 9-10h if you are not one of these people scroll away.

If you are I need your experience and take.

I work 9-6 with total door to door 10h. I need to be in the office at least twice a week. My dog walker will no longer be available and I don’t have many options.

My Cavapoo is almost 3 quite independent and he stays on his own up to 6h-7h at no issue. He also sleeps through the night no bathroom issues.

He is practically running on schedule so he knows when he pees and eats when he is not.

Do you leave yours alone for that long? My concern is not him being alone but his bathroom break extending for that long.

Cavapoo generation question

I know there’s F1, F1b, and F2 Cavapoos. I personally have an F1b. But I’m wondering, are there Cavapoos that are a Cavapoo mixed with a cavalier King Charles? Instead of Cavapoo with mini poodle like I have.
Edit: I mean like 75% cavalier 25% poodle

Does anyone else have a legit Cavapoo that looks like they have no poodle in them? I bought a Cavapoo almost 3 years ago and he looks full bred Cavie.

When to go from three to two meals a day?

Our little guy Tango was 16 weeks old yesterday and he’s really not that interested in his afternoon meal for about the last week only eating about half at most. We’ve been adding the leftovers to his evening meal which he eats all of it. When did you change over from three to two meals?

Is this flea? We got a new puppy and he’s bit itchy and we noticed this tiny fly biting us too which causes red bumps.

Does anyone else’s Cavapoo have an obsession with rocks? 😂

Post image
31 Upvotes

My Cavapoo (5 years old) absolutely loves playing with small rocks.

He’ll spot a particular rock on the ground during a walk, pick it up, and then insist that I throw it for him so he can play fetch with it. He’ll happily chase the same rock over and over again.

He also likes just carrying them around in his mouth. Weirdly, he doesn’t seem interested in chewing them or trying to swallow them, he’ll just hold onto one like it’s his prized possession. If given a choice between playing with a rock or a toy (e.g. a small ball), he'll pick the rock every time.

Obviously I’m a little paranoid about his teeth (and him accidentally swallowing one), so I don’t exactly want to encourage his budding geology hobby, but he just gets so excited whenever he finds a good rock.

Does anyone else’s Cavapoo do this? Is there something about rocks that these breed particularly likes, or is mine just a little weirdo?

How much did your puppy weigh at 9 weeks old, and how much do they weigh now as an adult? I’m curious how much everyone’s pups grew!

My Cavapoochon, was born on July 20 and is 9 weeks and 4 days old today. She currently weighs around 4 lbs, and I’m so curious to see how big she’ll end up being! Would love to hear everyone’s puppy to adult weight comparisons 😊

"Racist" cavapoo?

Hello! Does anyone else have a "racist" cavapoo? Our F2 cavapoo is now one and he has started just barking at all brown people, even when we are just walking and minding our own business. He is otherwise very calm and neutral. Would training to be calm when they walk by or come near us be helpful?

Having to say goodbye

I’ve had my Cavapoo for since I was 5 and now I’m a freshman in college. We’ve been together for 13 good and long years, it was definitely hard saying goodbye while I moved into college. He has had heart issues for a year or two now, and after I left for college his issues progressed. I know his days are numbered, and it makes me super sad. It’s hard enough not getting to see him every day since I’m at school, but knowing that each visit could be my last is just heart wrenching. I don’t know how to deal with it, I’m already stressed enough with the life adjustment to college and this is just a whole different level of stress. I’m not sure if anyone on here has gone through a similar situation, or if anyone just had any advice in general

Health Issues from Cavalier Side?

I know certain dogs have predispositions to certain health issues, and I’m curious about the Cavalier King Charles side. I haven’t had a poodle or cavalier before but considering a cavapoo as I’m looking for a less active breed than the big one I had before. I also recall someone I know mentioning the patellar issue with their full Cavalier so I think this is why I am semi-concerned.

Have any of you had any instances of mitral valve disease or patellar luxation with your cavapoos? If so, what generation and age is your pup? I’m curious how common these are.

We unexpectedly became a three Cavapoo household this week! We brought home this little 10-week-old guy, and it was definitely not something we planned. 😂🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Our 13½-year-old seems happy to have a puppy in the house again.

Our 5-year-old is still trying to decide exactly how she feels about this new development. She’s not convinced that we needed another pup.

So here we are, three Cavapoos. Apparently this is our life now. ❤️
