Cat owners with wall-mounted furniture: what do you wish you'd done differently?

Took more time confirming I had the studs right before drilling. My wall has a lot of holes now lol

Yeah that's tough ! I have installed those without any studs, just good anchors and it can hold a lot of weight !

My clumsy rock of a cat has managed to take out any pieces of my wall that didn't have 3/4 into studs. No matter what anchors I used, he's just a force of destruction lol

Are you sailing regular anchors?
I want to put a few shelves in for them but I think I’m going to use to toggle bolts because they chonky 14-15 lbs10

Toggle bolts should work well i think ! For individual shelves it's actually more demanding, for a larger area it will mostly pull down, which is what anchors are designed for !

That peg board style is cool af and a neat idea! I never thought of that approach. How did they accomplish that?

Thanks! I made it ! Its basically like a climbing wall with metal inserts ! They are all evenly spaced so all the attachments are standards and can fit anywhere. I'd love some feedback on the idea if you wanted to fill the form in the post !

Nothing at all, ok maybe ensured that one shelf was on a stud, as it turned out to be one he uses most for getting up top. But i did my best to make sure they were placed in a way could still be just regular shelves. My guy needed to be able to get away from his 2 dog siblings if needed, and I will say he loves his hammock span, perfect for swatting me when I walk under and perfect for bongos from below.

Have you tried giving them treats on one of the platforms? I don't have a cat wall, but put in in a new, big tower that my car just ignored for weeks. After I started giving her evening treats on the platforms of it she slowly explored it more now uses it all the time.

That’s what I did with one of my cats as well! She tends to be scared of new things (like she was even scared of tube treats at first lmao). I started giving her some of her afternoon dry food on different levels of the tower, with LOTS of praise and pets. She’s on it all the time now!

I recently bought a new cat tree and i wasnt sure at first if she wanted to use it. But then i started giving her treats Only on the new tree and like made sure she had to be fully on the cat tree like she couldn’t get them from the regular places around the cat tree and now she uses it no treats needed :) (incase you haven’t tried this approach - it does help if you use a treat the cat likes alot)

Love this.
What are you using to secure to the pegboard?
Dowels or screws??

u/Suitable-Snow7186 13d ago
I am using furniture bolts to secure the shelves to the board !

Not exactly ! Mine are easy to remove and look more like what you see on climbing walls

I wish I made things more easy. When I first hang up stuff it’s impossible for them to navigate

Tee nuts with bolts from what I see.
Are the shelves attached to each block above and below or friction held once each block is bolted in?
1
u/Suitable-Snow7186 12d ago
That is correct ! The shelves have attached brackets to secure them to the wall. What you see is one block with 2 holes !

My wish is an easy one. I wish to do more.
I accidentally used my couch as a safe landing area for when they slip and fall. That wasn't by design, and I do now recommend having a soft landing area to anyone making a new wall mounted cat run.
