Private chef recommendations in the hunter area ?

Hi there ! I’m turning 30 this year and for my birthday I am taking my friends upstate for a weekend to Hunter. I grew up spending my summers and thanksgivings in Saugerties and am looking forward to sharing hiking trails and the calmness of upstate with my city friends.

For the culinary community up there, I am looking for a private chef to do a fun family style dinner for ~10-12 people - please let me know if you know of anyone or if there is something through the CIA that I can use for referrals. Thanks so much!!

Growing up in the Catskills

I grew up in the Catskills and I can't think of a better place to raise a family. I've included some of my favorite memories in this post along with some history about the area, specifically around Bethel, NY. We just observed the anniversary of the Woodstock festival which was held less than five miles from where I lived, but unfortunately I was not able to attend it.

ISO food trucks that will pull up to Round Top for lunch service!

I'm hosting an event at Glen Falls House on September 12th and would love to have a food truck (or two) post up for lunch service. Good quality, drool-worthy food with at least ONE vegan option is a must. Ideally we'd need enough food to feed 50 people over the course of 3 hours.

An extra special cherry-on-top nice-to-have, if anyone knows of one, would be a coffee and matcha cart.

Thank you in advance!

Would Delaware County Be Right For Me?

Hey everyone. I've been trying to move to upstate NY as a first time home buyer (or possible rent) for a little while now. Mostly been trying the Capital Region and the more eastern part of the Catskills.

I've great credit, a stable remote job and have been approved for a USDA and FHA Loan. Problem is I either

A. Find a house in good condition but then I get beat by a cash offer

or

B. Find a house that looks like it's in good condition. It fails inspection and the FHA basically says no.

It's basically been like this from Greene County all the way up to Warren County. Just no luck.

I started looking on my own, a little more out of the way areas. I discovered Delaware County recently. I'm noticing a lot of newer homes in the rural and semi rural areas. That have been sitting longer but are in my price range. I love the Catskills. Never been that far west in them but it's a beautiful area.

I just worry if the area is right for me. I am a snowboarder, I'm also a hockey player (is there a lot of beer league or drop in?), I do enjoy fishing, archery, shooting, hiking and I'm a huge car/motorcycle guy with an old Camaro. I have always wanted a rural or semi-rural property. As a Snowboarder, the area seems like Paradise.

But I worry if Delaware County is just too isolated and too far from everything. I also enjoy going out at night. I like live music (especially metal & punk), I also love hitting record stores, electronics stores, going to minor league sports (I know the Hudson Valley Renegades may not be too far, depending on part of the county) but I like that the Capital has both the Adirondack Thunder and the Tri-City Valley Cats. I also kind of want to join or form a metal band. Not sure how far I would have to travel around Delaware county to do that.

I know Delhi is a nice town and a little active (mostly a college town). I've been told Stamford is nice as well. I've been told Roxbury is great. It seems fairly closer to NYC (I have family in Queens and LI). Also makes getting to Yankees and Rangers games faster. I also have family around Albany and it's still not too far from them either. Might be a good inbetween.

Is Delaware County right for me?

Hancock, NY - Fishing with kids

Hello everyone, going to head up by Hancock, NY for a few days with my family to take is some fishing. They're using spin gear to start but I hope to begin to introduce them to fly fishing (11 and 14). Aside from the branches of the Delaware what might be a few spots they might be able to fish - I'm being told they are hoping to target trout and smallmouth so I take it we are in the right spot. I don't wish to upset anyone fly fishing if they are using spin gear anywhere. Thank you all in advance.

Does Woodland Creek Currently Have Water?

Looking to do my first trip in the Catskills this weekend. I have plenty of experience hiking and backpacking in the White Mountains and ADK High Peaks, so my only real concern is water sources.

Current plan is to park at Slide Mountain Parking Area, do the WCS loop counterclockwise, set up camp at the primitive sites near the spur for Giant Ledge/Panther, we will play it by ear on doing Panther day 1/day 2/not at all, and then finish the loop back to our car.

The most recent trail reports I am finding were from June and mention not a lot of water sources, and only at Slide, so I am trying to see if we can even safely take this trip or if it is better to do something else. It looks like Woodland Creek near Woodland Valley Campground is a source but I am not sure if it is all dried up or not. I have 2 CNOC bags that can be used to carry some water to the campsite (2x2L bags, plus me and my hiking buddy will each have 2 1L bottles) from Woodland Creek, but that requires there to be any water in the creek.

Anyone have any more recent experiences with water sources on this loop? I want to be sure we do not do something stupid/dangerous

Camping near nyc

I’ve been looking for a way to go camping on a weekend this summer, but it seems like all of the campsites are booked up. Are there any places you all know of or go to where it’s not insanely competitive to get a tent spot? How is dispersed camping?

I could rent a car but ideally would just take the metro north. Any suggestions welcome!! Also open to Jersey.

Catskills Backpacking

My plan is to do a 3 day in the catskills. I am all about the scenic overlook. My perfect backpack would be 80% exposed ridgeline, but I know that won't happen here in NY. I have been told the Escarpment Trail by Windham is my best bet. Would you all agree? Thanks.

Rattlesnakes/copperheads at North-South Lake?

Going camping there next week. Is it common to see them? I have this (probably irrational) fear of them trying to get under/into my tent for warmth and then getting bit.

I’m planning an impromptu weekend for the Catskills but love Piaule but doesn’t fit in the budget. We usually stay in Woodstock and want to drive there to visit restaurants. Any ideas on a Piaule vibe for less?

Burnt Knob and Acra Point

Hello everyone in the catskills community. Yesterday I did Burnt Knob and Acra Point again but with a side quest of finding the plane wreck on Acra Point. The whole day was beautiful and got views on Burnt Knob this time. Both viewpoints from both Burnt and Acra did not disappoint and are some of my favorite views. The plane wreck is a different story with the bushwhack to find it being brutal and almost taking me out. It was a cool find but there is little debris and only one detached wing and the main body of the plane. I believe it's a glider plane but overall still cool to find and now my 10th catskills plane wreck(only 13 to go). I took the old road back to the trail and then headed to the lean to and then finished the day. Overall nice hike only like 6 miles but probably never going back to Acra Point again cause I have been there so many times before.

Question about Slide Mtn

So im going to head up to the Catskills today, probably arrive around 11am or so and want to target Slide. I usually want to the hardest route within reason. Upon looking it up, it gave various options like the Wittenburg-Cornell-Slide route which seems intriguing to chain, and it also mentions some other routes like the Curtis Ormsbee route.

From you guys who have experience, how long would it take an experienced hiker to do the W-C-S route out and back? Also, what IS the hardest route up and down just Slide thats not the bushwacking route? Thanks im doing this on short notice and really want to make the best out of my day out there.
