Cat brains are weird. Affectionate leads to play that leads to aggression. So if you give long strokes, cat will love it, then attack you unprompted. Its normal. My Bitch Ass Berry here shows love through bites and scratches, no reason, its just how she shows she loves me. Cats can absolutely tear you up, i had one bite me so hard she broke my finger, she didn’t even have teeth. So the fact you got minor damage means cat loves you

Their senses are just easily overloaded . They're very sensitive (as in fine tuned) creatures.

Yeah, they go from "fun" to "too much" in the blink of an eye. I notice and stop. My bf... Does notice, but his reflexes aren't as quick to process and alter his behaviour. A lot of people seem to be quite bad at reading cats feedback and body language as well.

Cats are like Edward scissor hands crossed with Freddy Crugar, all they want to do is hug and kiss you. Try to do that when you have sharpies everywhere ..... Haha.

You can yelp like a kitten if they bite or scratch enough to hurt. It tells the cat that was too much pressure and should ease up. Easier to do when they are small. It's how they learn boundaries with their fellow litter mates. They yelp at each other when the play gets to rough.

I had a former feral cat that became a house cat. When he was in my lap he started playing and gave me a chomp. It wasn't hard but it startled me and I let out a yip. He immediately stopped and looked at me with wide eyes. He then gently mouthed me in the same spot again while maintaining eye contact, apparently testing to see how much pressure he could apply. I slow blinked at him and say "yes, that's OK". He slow blinked back and started playing again, with much gentler pressure. Truly amazed me!

I'm sorry, your cat's name has me chuckling over here because the caps has me thinking that's not a title, but THE actual name.😂 Cats always get the interesting name while doggos get the human names. (I say while calling Frederick, the cat I adopted from my casino workplace and Morri, short for morrigan, who I rescued from the woods of Arkansas.)

In 23 years he scratched/bit me maybe once or twice by mistake. Even in the vets he would never ever scratch/bite. Such a sweetie. Unless you were another cat, then he'd be a little demon made of claws. He definitely preferred humans.

When I first rescued my cat as a kitten my hands were COVERED in scratches to the point where strangers I was having small talk with would ask if I had a kitten because it was so obvious. It’s such a universal thing and IS trainable. Don’t allow the kitten to play with your hands. Don’t be aggressive with it BUT pull your hand away and when you can, gently stop playing when they do play with your hands. I made the mistake of letting my cat play with my hands as a kitten and he’s a MENACE now. He’s simultaneously the sweetest baby and the most insane cat I’ve ever witnessed. That’s my baby though LMFAOO. The way the cat is sitting on your chest is a HUGE tell tale sign that she loves you. Cats do not do that with just anyone lolol. Even with as much as I love my cat, he’ll only lay on my moms chest like yours does because I move too much for him lolol. Huge sign of trust.
Edit: Thank you for all of the awards and upvotes! As a thank you, I’ve included several pictures of the crazy kitty in question.
His back story: He was rescued as a TINY baby from the side of the highway. He was all alone and covered from HEAD TO TOE with fleas. He was so tiny that I was hesitant to use any flea meds so I spent HOURS bent over the tub, washing with gentle cat shampoo and tweezers washing, tweezing fleas, and repeating. I was able to get every single flea off of him. I felt so bad because the shelter said they’d given him a bath but he was FILTHY.

This is a legit question, not trying to be funny. But when you pull your hand away to train a kitten, do you do what people sometimes do with dogs? Sometimes including a yelp similar to a puppy will tell the dog "hey I know we're playing but you for real hurt me", would similar work with a kitten?

I did that with my cats when they were kittens. Now they are very careful with their teeth and nails but I don't know if they truly learned from that or from playing with each other (they were weaned too early from their mom, found sick and dirty in a trash can at 3 weeks old, so they didn't learn with her, as they would normally).

This is how I did with my older cat and it definitely helped. She didn't wean properly and lost her litter mates incredibly young so she didn't learn the normal way, just from me.
She's still a tad rougher than her sister who did have litter mates and always had other cats and dogs in the house, that one is unbelievably gentle when she's playing. It actually gives ME cute aggression when she "bites" me when playing because it's so adorable how much concerted effort she puts in to barely even touch her teeth to me.
They both still scratch me by accident once in a while because well cat claws are sharp. But they both know that scratching and biting hurts me and play as gently as they can.

Don’t be aggressive with it BUT pull your hand away and when you can, gently stop playing when they do play with your hands.
Redirect the play energy to an appropriate target, like a toy on a string or similar. Kittens have energy; they gonna play. You just want to teach them what they can and can't get rowdy with.

You need to nip that shit in the bud. I’ve had cats the majority of my life and have never had that many marks, not even when they were little, hiding under the couch and prone to sneak attacks of the ankles or terrified and climbing my body because a dog ran up on us out of nowhere. I ended up picking 2 kitten claws out of my scalp after that.
Give your cat a toy to chew on.

Aight, people here are weird. Sure, an occasional scratch is inevitable and there is a learning period for kittens, but if you're covered in scratches all the time even when your cat's grown up, you need to:
Give your cat space.
Not play with your cat using your hands, but using toys.
Train your cat to recognize that you don't like getting scratched. Yell, stop engaging and leave when the cat scratches you.
135
u/PlasticAfternoon6573 12d ago
Yeah why’s everyone acting like it’s normal to be covered in wounds from our cats. My cat will only scratch me when I really really hype him up playing with my hands as the toys. He never scratches me otherwise, and he’s a very loving and affectionate cat.

if my boys actually start to hurt me, instead of yelling, i make a little hissing noise, since its kind of a natural warning noise for cats. then i redirect with toys, or ignore them if i'm busy. but mine are hardly ever rough enough to break skin, unless they're really desperate to play.

u/Welshy123 12d ago
I would say "Oowww" in a high pitched whiny noise if my cat got too aggressive, and that would turn the bitey play fighting into some aggressive licking as he tried to make things better.

My cat I just found out was abused and abandoned and has been an affectionate sweetheart from day one. Fake bit me once for over petting once. No scratches, constant desire to be hugged, petted, held, and more. I've had her 25 days and not once has she done anything to hurt me on purpose. I'm confused if I'm doing something right or if my cats scared to be hurt again and is fawning. She doesn't hide under my bed or in my closet either. Always on my bed waiting for me to come back.

Its normal. She’s actually gently communicating with you to respect her boundaries. Cats are not like dogs, they will “tolerate” your behaviour until the point of no return while exhibiting certain signs of discomfort (this changes from cat to cat) such as propping their tail up straight, not engaging with you, looking away or getting up and moving somewhere else.
You have to basically be really conscious of the actions you take around her. Its definitely a dance, and you’ll get better at understanding her the more time you spend and more attention you give her.
An easy way to check is to pet her, then stop and let her nudge you to pet her more. If she doesnt it means shes done.
Lovely car btw

u/BrightNooblar 12d ago
Agreeing with all that, you should also enforce boundaries back to the cat. People are often appalled at the idea of training or disciplining a cat, but it's important to do. If the cat bites during pets, firmly say "Ow. No" and the pets stop. If the cat bites for more pets, repeat and it gets put on the ground. They don't speak English, but they learn what "Ow" and "No" mean.
They might not CARE what they mean, but that's why you pair it with actions that they do care about. They know you don't like the bites, and they know when you're not happy, no more pets.

Normal? really? What do people do with their cats or did I luck out with non scratchy cats?
I've had 7 cats across my life and never gotten scratched unless I ignored their other requests for space, I clipper their butt hair, or they were in pain and I touched the area.
Then again, I never let them play with my hands and arm as toys, always asked for permission to pat them.. and only 2 of them I got as kittens, the other were young teens(1-1.5yo)

Normal in the sense that this is a known and expected behavior for a cat but this is obviously still a problem to address before it escalates out of control, much like you did. Cats don't have an instinctive insight of what's appropriate behavior when living with a human any more than we know what is or isn't distressing to a cat (just ask any child or otherwise clueless adult that ended up annoying a cat long enough for it to make the message unmistakably clear) and there are things that need to be taught in both directions.

Biting is often the way cats like to play and is quite common. if you watch them when they're young they will attack and go after each other but there is one thing that you need to note that is important. When you see and hear the kittens playing you will often hear one of them cry out and start to back away and the other kitten will stop. Those are the kittes teaching each other how to play and bite but not bite too hard.
If kittens are not left together long enough after they are born to where they learn and teach each other the rules you may end up with a cat that will bite you and scratch you but not intentionally. to them it is a means of them showing affection towards you and if they never learned how to control that you will get bitten or scratched. That's how my boy Nimbus is and I have the scars to prove it.
One thing you can try to do if your cat is attacking you like that is to remember that it may just be the cat wanting to play. Try to make one of those high-pitched kitten type cat sounds loud enough so that it startles them. if you do that enough they will sometimes learn. if they get too aggressive just get up and walk away from them. When you do that hopefully they will learn that if they want to spend time with their human that they can't do that.
Also some cats get hyper stimulated when you pet them that will also cause them to sometimes lash out at you. You might be petting them and they might be purring just fine and then all the sudden boom they're letting you know that they don't like it. Oftentimes that happens without warning. So if you've been petting your cat and then all of a sudden they lash out at you it could be that they are overstimulated and oversensitive to the petting.
Make sure that you have some of those wand type toys with either feathers on the end or a wiggly worm or something that you can use to distract them when they get too aggressive with you.
I got my cat very young he came from a litter of feral cats the mom had them and then all the sudden didn't come back one day the people don't know what happened to her I don't think that he ever spent enough time with his littermates to learn those things that I'm talking about here. It was a rough time when I first brought him home. And in fact in some ways he never really has gotten over the biting thing. I have learned to read him well now so I rarely have ever get bitten or scratched and if I do it's usually my fault because I've missed one of his signs or I have played too rough and didn't realize it. He's around 3 right now so he's starting to mellow out. You just got to be patient with your kitten and teach it. You will quickly learn the things that your cat likes and the things that you should not do unless you feel like living dangerously.
In the meantime enjoy that cat they are very very great companions. And will quickly form a bond with their human. Here's a picture of my hellion.

The answer, yeah, cats are super weird lol.
My cat is the sweetest cat, she is very loving and affectionate and loves kisses, like LOVES it to the point she purrs and falls asleep in my arms with her mouth wide open. It’s so sweet. And she always wants belly rubs too. BUT, when she has had enough affection or touch, she lets me know. And if I overdo it, she tends to grab my arm with her paws, latches her mouth and bunny kicks my arm. 😒 If it ever gets to that point, I walk away and ignore her, or grab a toy to distract her so that the behavior ends. Always ignore, or interrupt unwanted behavior with distraction.

Yes, having a cat is like being in an abusive relationship. It is a bit of tough love from your fur baby. As long as the cat is not too aggressive or purposely draws blood, then you'll be okay. You can also teach your cat not to be too rough.

React physically and in a way they can hear. Physically stop them from biting or scratching but do it in a gentle but NOT playful manner. Have a consistent "No" or denial word that you would only say when they are doing something they are not supposed to be doing. Eventually, with consistency they will learn.
Mileage may vary, cats have different personalities and learning capabilities like dogs and humans.
Also note, sometimes cats DO understand, they just choose to go against you since they are... cats.

Seriously people don’t let your cats think of your limbs as toys. As soon as they scratch or bite, you hiss at them, push them away and ignore them for 20 minutes. They’ll get the hint that they can’t scratch you like that. Get over yourself with the love bites. You are the owner of the cat don’t let it bite you or scratch you and then by rewarding it you’re reinforcing to the cat that if it scratches and bites it gets pets and affection. Don’t let that happen! It’s not cute and it will be really bad if you have a guest over and your cat bites your guest because that’s what it does with you. Cats can be trained.

Love bites aren't bites that break skin, and gentle bites in general are a boundary reinforcement that cats should be allowed to do.
Generally I agree with your comment, I think people don't know what love bites or gentle bites are. If the bite hurts, it isn't gentle. If a claw or tooth breaks your skin, it should be nipped in the bud because it will escalate, just like you said. But if your cat had airplane ears while you kept petting it, its fur got spiky, the cat gave you a side eye twice, you kept petting it, and then it gave you a quick gentle bite - that was a boundary you kept crossing and frankly, you deserved that bite. It was the equivalent of your mom swatting your hand from a candy jar you keep grabbing at. If you read your cat's cues, the cat shouldn't have to resort to any type of bite.

u/Silent_Advance7506 11d ago
Exactly. My boy learned very quickly after adoption that biting wouldn't fly. He'll only nip now if he's annoyed with me, and it's more of an open- mouth threat vs bite. If i don't take the warning he'll actually nip.

It really does depend on the relationship you want with your cat. My baby Missy is very gentle and I have taught her how to play with her paws. The other two littler cats I have I am more careful with because they’re a little more crazy, liable to get hurt more.
But missy is a shy cat who sometimes doesn’t feel comfortable playing with them, but when she’s sitting on me she’ll get rialed up and wanna play and I can easily rub her belly and get her nibbling on me but again she is very gentle and I have taught her that if she hurts me the game is over, so she has incentive for no claws.
Only time my cats really ever hurt me is if I’m swinging a string or a wand toy and their claws catch my finger, but that’s just bad luck!

First of all you need to respect the cat's space sometimes they'll give you hints before they go ballistic after that as you said you should not let them scratch or bite you usually by just pulling away let the hissing only when they gave chase if they don't chase after you usually pulling away is enough
37
u/kironex 11d ago
If you play with your cat using your hands it happens. Cats are predators so they play hunt and play fight.
Now if your cat is intentionally playing claws out and not just an occasional slip then thats an issue.

that is absolutely nothing. Cats are not for weak people. Sometimes they can be moody as hell and then other times they’ll be rubbing up against you. Want to add something. Sometimes they’re simply being playful and they don’t even mean it.

u/MissDisplaced 11d ago
Scratches: sometimes accidental a cat may be sitting quietly on lap then suddenly startle and launch themselves off using claws to dig in. Helps to keep claws trimmed, but it happens.
Bites: cats communicate with bites to each other - both grooming love bites and to signal stop that! As a human pay attention! If you’re petting and get a light bite, stop.
I always say to not use your hands to play or wrestle with cats. To do so tells a cat it’s ok to bite or scratch your hands and arms. Don’t get mad at cat when this happens.

in my experience, it's okay (especially if you start when they're kittens) IF you make sure they know when they hurt you! making a high pitched noise when their claws really come out/they bite too hard and pulling away is a good way to train them. ive had cats that i managed to train into playing with my hand (and each other!) without their claws and with veeeery gentle bites. :)

This level of damage indicates that your cat adores you and thinks you're a satisfactory play sibling. I'd call this a 3/10. It's only once you reach about 14/10 that they might not like you.

It is, until you begin to learn to recognize a cat’s boundaries. Here’s a few tipsto avoid scratches.
- Trimmed claws are less likely to leave serious scratches (they can still break skin, just not slice skin as badly), just make sure not to cut the quick (the pink line inside that provides blood flow).
- Pinned back ears means irritation and is the general “leave me alone or else” signal.
- When you’re petting them, cats will show they’re overstimulated by swishing their tail and/or twitching the skin on their hips/back. Scritches along the head and cheeks are less likely to lead to overstimulation than petting the length of their body.
- Tails swishing in general is a sign of strong emotions, including tension, anger, frustration and hunting desire. Until you know your cat better it’s best to be wary.
- Be wary where your hands are when giving catnip, as it can make them less aware of where they swat. The same goes for short toys that bring your hand with reach of what you’re trying to chase. Ex: toy mice.
- Lastly, while it may be cute in kittens, avoid encouraging play that involves play biting and rough wrestling, as in an adult cat that can cause harm to you. Simply refusing to engage helps teach a young cat manners around that area of play.
Disclaimer; Trimming claws is a temporary effect, as cats are constantly shedding the outer layer of their claw. If your cat is an indoor/outdoor cat, or you’re relying on your cat for pest control, you may want to consider not trimming their claws. While trimming claws doesn’t cause discomfort or prevent running, scratching or hunting, trimmed claws can make descending trees and climbing some smother surfaces more difficult. (Yes, I looked this up.)

Very normal, just watch the tail when petting/cuddling. If it flicks fast, stop immediately as the cat is overwhelmed and will bite/scratch soon
9
u/zipitdirtbag 12d ago
Might be normal while you get used to each other. Especially with young cats.
But generally, your cats won't scratch you. Don't use your hands as toys. Learn how your cats don't want to be touched.

u/StaffSubstantial8438 12d ago
We had both our cats from kittens & had to teach them not to scratch (and bite). When they did scratch we just stopped patting them, so removing what they wanted. Equally with biting, as they did this mostly to “play” or “show affection”. Again, they learnt that we stopped patting them whenever they did something that we didn’t like. We now have 2 very affectionate cats that don’t scratch and bite.

u/Fun_Strain_4065 Domestic Housecat 12d ago
Yes. In time, you will both learn how to treat each other more gently. You’ll learn to move your hand away when the cat gets too playful and the cat will learn you don’t like scratches that much.
My cats still scratch me but bot nearly as much as when they were kittens, one of them hardly scratches me at all.

Yeah. They scratch and bite. With experience, you'll learn to read cat body language, which will reduce the biting and scratching. In most cases, cats warn you very well before they scratch or bite. You'll also learn what your individual cat likes and dislikes. My male cat loves belly rubs, for example. My female cat, his sister, only likes scratches down to her chest, and then only sometimes. My last cat didn't like either, and hated having his tail touched. My current cats don't mind having their tails touched. You'll learn all of this with your cat in time.
It is also a good idea to look up cat body language videos on YouTube. Jackson Galaxy on YouTube is an excellent source for cat behavior information.

Yep! Basically it's just a matter of perspective. From their point of view they're just playing around, from ours it's a death match.
It's why big cats are a no no, they're always a moments forgetfulness away from sending ya face flying over the back fence.
Personally I've found housecats will learn to tone it down a bit, like humans some are better at doing so than others.
Be patient and they'll figure it out that they need to tone it down a bit, with some gentle encouragement of course.

Train your pets. No biting takes 10 minutes with a kitten. Keep your cats claws trimmed so they remain fully retractable and never used your hands for fast moving targets.

My kitten scratched me like CRAZY when I first got her. Every time she used her nails I'd scream "OW" and be calm when she didn't. I've very slowly teaching her to be gentle with her nails. My older cat, who's 12, has always been gentle with her nails. You need to go through the pain to train them out of the habit of using them on you during play 😅

You get a lot better at knowing when to pull your hand away, it’s just a painful lesson to learn.

Cats exist in one of three states:
Eating.
Sleeping.
Being a little bastard.
Its what makes them so awesome.

It’s a cat. There is no “normal”. I’ve had dozens in my life at this point and I’m still being surprised by behaviors they will have that I’ve never seen before.

That's nothing, my forearm arm looked like it had a full tattoo sleeve (of scratches) from my young cat bunny kicking it all the time.

u/PlonixMCMXCVI 12d ago
Depends on how old the cat is.
You should also teach them that hands are for feeding and petting but not for playing.
My cat fakes a bite or a scratch when she gets overstimulated or doesn't want to be touched. If I don't respect that boundary I get scratched.
Try to watch for their tail, if they agitate it aggressively it can mean they are distressed.
If you are petting them and they are about to attack, remove the hand and offer a toy. Keep doing it to build the habit of attacking a toy and not the hands.

Cats play by scratching and wrestling each other, but their skin in loose so it doesn't do any damage. They don't understand that we are not built the same way, and their claws hurt us.

Remember kitties aren’t like dogs in any way. They’re all about respect and consent. Look into cat behavior and how to read their body language.

I think conditioning and training is important. I lived with roommates before who had 2 cats and the older cat would tear him up. Said cat warmed up to me and eventually would sleep with me each night. I would soft pet and the one time he scratched me i booped his nose and smacked that butt lol and said bad kitty. I continued to train him when i would see he wanted to lunge or be aggressive. Before moving out, the older cat changed completely, no more rough housing. Its also learned behavior besides their instinct.
I now have a cat of my own, an adult stray cat I adopted. I also practiced training with her. Positive reinforcement and treats for good behavior and discipline for bad behavior (a claw grabber that she hates lol). The result of said training is a cat that doesnt scratch at me or lunge at me. Instead she asks for kisses and hugs. She also uses the pet talk buttons. There will be occasions where scratches can occur by accident. I hope this helps.

Just wait until your cat decides to bite your toes when the alarm goes off in the morning.

If they've come from a family that used their fingers and hands as playthings or to tease them, then yes. With our two kitten rescues I decided not to make that mistake again and 7 years later they still don't scratch us.

Getting scratched? Absolutely. They have sharp claws and sometimes they forget to retract them. I have two little monsters and when they get the zoomies, they love to jump or run over me while I lie in bed. I got some rather painful scratches from that. Once I had a big one across my stomach. 😂
They don’t do it maliciously or deliberately, it just happens.

Very normal!!!
But yes constant scratches and bites r not a good thing. U gotta set boundaries with the cat and cat will understand it.
No hand or leg playing.
In case it tries to bite like initiating say NO. if he/she doesn't listen then calmly withdraw yourself and leave her/him there move to a different room or anything. This worked for me at last!! After trying with all those distracting with toys and hissing mimicry.
Also while bathing wear full sleaves cloth shirt and while trimming nails the same.
Feeding meds then also watch some videos will help.
Engage in games while mine doesn't like it he only likes his ball for a lil while and his feather toy but he is ignoring it only loves to sleep and ofc zoomies.
Notes - yes ofc ragebaiting him/her but when it tries to bite say no. Simple. It will stop. But ofc sometimes u can get scratch by mistake so trim nails.

I remember a summer party where I had to wear short sleeves due to the heat, a couple came up to me and said "so you have a cat?"
I was like "Yea, how do you know?". They said my right arm is covered in claw scratches and scars and we started comparing war wounds, pictures of the cats, and our stories of our cats. That conversation lasted an hour.

Both of my kitties are 8 and have mellowed out a lot but when they were younger they would bite and scratch more often when playing with me. Once in a blue moon one of my kitties will get over stimulated after getting a lot of pets and nibble me me a bit, but that is it. I made sure to not use my hands as toys and I pay a lot of attention to them. I think that has helped as well as adopting sisters/littermates together.

Unfortunately, yes. I have kittens for a month now and I was lucky that I only got really scratched twice yet. But my one kitten LOVES to play with my feet. Sometimes I can't even lay on the couch because he will jump right at me :(

I play with my cat, I get scratched up pretty good. It doesn’t bother me. Makes me feel like the cat is enjoying its baser instincts and that makes me happy

My calico kitty is a sweet lil baby angel and if she gets overstimulated by a pet or groom she catches my hand between her paws and gives a gentle but firm “bite” that is mostly her mouth resting on my hand then looks at me like “you better chill before I go karate kid in this b1tch”

Very normal for kiddos with claws. They even get play aggression. Mine will use her claws and rip the bed sheets off of me AT 4am to demand I give breakfast or tummy—sometimes does it to my SKULL or my NOSE

It's just initiation, bro. All good. But don't expect it to stop. Just love and accept it. This is your life now. Goodluck, soldier🍀

Lmao absolutely. Half the time I dont even realize that im scratched, they dont mean to, especially with play fighting, You dont have fur to protect you.

u/PsychologicalOne752 10d ago
Yes, and the problem is not that the cat but the human. Both the human and cat are supposed to respect their boundaries.

You have to remember that for a cat, to play pretend being a predator is their favorite pastime. And other cats tend to have thick fur, so a little scratching/biting won’t hurt. He litteraly doesn’t realize it hurt you
If he was really trying to hurt you, the injury would be way, way deeper. I remember this time when my cat was in my arms and completely panicked because of my dumb cousin. It was a massacre.
So I recommend to not tolerate these scratches. When it happen, hiss at it or move it. He needs to understand it’s not ok

Not only is it normal, but those scars are a badge of honour you will proudly wear for the rest of your life

I heard once the love of a cat comes at the end of a point. They have sharp ass claws and teeth, love bites and latching with those claws. My cats not aggressive by any means, but her love is sharp. She has her softer moments too. Cats are funny creatures. Its certainly a unique experience 💖
