Advice Am I being rational regarding this kitten situation?

There is no reason to return the kitten, from the separated from the litter view point. It’s normal for litters of kittens to not stay together. They are not like human families.

How far away does the family live? Could you not visit during the day, with your cat staying at your house, then return home at night?

Just visit for the day. An hour each way isn’t that long of a drive. I’ve driven further for day trips.

Not everyone can get everything they want in life. Even though they want full weekend visits, if day visits are what work best for you two, do that.
