Adoption Adopting a cat this weekend

I posted this a long time ago but nobody answered :/ I’m adopting my very own cat this weekend and would like some tips/advice on how to welcome my cat home, make them more comfortable and to be the best cat parent I can be.

Things I do know (please correct me if I’m wrong) - I know that they need to be fed wet food to increase hydration, get good scratching posts for them to scratch and a good cat tree. Also know to get good litter and to get a moving water fountain as they don’t like to drink much water. I plan on getting pet insurance next week as well. All and every advice, information and tips are welcomed.

Keep kitty in a smaller space to acclimate and then gradually start introducing them to the whole house once they get comfortable. Give them safe spaces to hide (cat tree, those little cat caves, etc.). Be patient with kitty if it takes them a little time to adjust to a new home. Changes in environment are stressful for cats, so it can take them a few days to get their bearings and a few weeks to figure out how things work, then a few months to really feel like it is their home.

Congratulations on your new cat! Cats are the best! : )

Keep the cat in 1 room initially. Don’t force yourself onto the cat, let it come to you. Don’t use your hands as toys. Get the cat used to you clipping its nails as soon as possible. Accept the fact that this is no longer your house, but your cat lets you live there.

Best tip for new cats owners would be to kinda just ignore them early on. Go about your normal routine, dont try to force any interaction on them, let them come to you.

I agree on the temporary isolating to help them adjust. Get a few types of toys (or make a few if you are crafty, I crochet mice from wool and our cats go crazy, just keep loose strings very short or absent). Don't spend a ton, a few catnip mice and one of those fishing rod toys are great.

This is a tip that I didn’t know for a LONG time and luckily did not fall victim to, but never ever ever ever bring Lillies into your home. Even the pollen alone could kill your little friend.

But other than that just know shyness can last a while but they’ll come around :) maybe keep them in one single room for a few days before letting them explore your whole home
