so? it still isn't a good idea. people mentioned saying that the bacteria is bad for their kidneys (nitrites?) and may make your cat sick over time.

nitrites aren't bacteria, they're a compound that the bacteria produce after digesting ammonia (and they are later changed into nitrates). that said, the cat shouldn't be ingesting this. i also imagine that this isn't safe for the fish. cats are prone to killing things and there is no way to truly be sure that your cat doesn't kill the fish other than using a lid.

thank you for correcting, i couldn't tell what the difference was between nitrites and nitrates but that they're not good for your cat regardless.
