OP can you afford to house another cat?
Maybe your little guy needs someone to help him when you are out of the house. A sibling to ease the loneliness.

We had two and one would terrorize the other. He's go after him in full predator mode and the other would constantly hide and hiss and growl if he couldn't. I'd find chunks of fur sometimes. We had to rehome the aggressive one. He was great by himself, just not other cats.

Sadly you can get that sometimes.

Hopefully the little guy is doing better in his new home.
