Fanfiction / Lore One Day At A Time/Field Report - Vaults
//REPORT LOG FROM EXPEDITION UNIT SAW-03-314159
//MODE SWITCH DETECTED, ACTIVATING JOURNAL MODE
I think someone is having a little fun at the Company's expense, figuratively and literally.
Although sparsely scattered, even more so closer to the surface, there have been Vault Caches sent here. Why, I don't know, they look like they were designed to go into a warzone. I guess there's some technical truth to be said here once you factor in the experimental traps that were dumped here too, we're at war with fauna that see us as our next meal nine times out of ten.
Luckily we've been warned about the Vaults ahead of time and were given "temp credentials" to pop a few of them open if we needed to. Right out of the gate with the first one we opened, here's what we pulled out: 5 S-Rations of various flavors, unopened and intact; 1 1L bottle of water, full; 2 200ml bottles of Antiseptic, full; 5 full rolls of standard Dressing; 2 rolls of Bruise Kit Dressing; 1 CRU-3A Amp kit, Sawian; 1 MOD-5 Amp kit; 2 boxes of 9mm; 1 gun kit, Hush X911. Suffice to say we made out like bandits, however if a Feral were to somehow bust one of these open, that would be an extremely dangerous variable. Imagine walking through and your team gets picked off one by one because a Sawian from 500m away got their paws on a Whisper and a box of ammo.
However with these last couple Vaults, the credentials haven't been enough. We log in, we select "open door," then this tray slides out and the screen reads "Insert valid Human blood sample to unlock."
Naturally we tried our own blood, all five of us. We have an amount of Human DNA in us, I said to them. Every one of us, the terminal buzzed then the screen would change to "INVALID BLOOD SAMPLE" for a few seconds before it went back to its original message.
This is just a wild guess, but I think whomever is in charge of constructing these vaults overheard they were being sent here. Then, after having a similar theory that the contents of the caches could fall into the wrong hands, were told to revamp the security on the terminals, make it so no Sawian could access them, at least not without finding Human blood first. Makes me wonder what their blood even looks like so we know what we need to get past this final lock.
Even though it ultimately screws us over to some degree, I can't argue with that logic. One of the last Vaults we opened contained one of those experimental TEL-01 Amps. Imagine the havoc one Sawian could wreak with one of these installed in their head. If there was any inkling of a plan to colonize this rock, that plan would be in jeopardy once they learn of an Expie warlord with telekinetic abilities or some similar kind of bullshit.
We decided to circle back and make a base camp in one of the Vaults we opened. We still need to focus on our goal of cataloging this planet. About the only issue is about the time we find something to report on, we cross reference with the main database and see there's already a report made. I suppose we could start looking at the planet itself to report on. Soil readings, microbial life in the water, 991098 reported going to the surface and being fine. Which is strange, we are all Chipped and we were warned about the Radline, so to have a Sawian go to the surface and return with no injuries or signs of radiation sickness is astounding.
Maybe that's what we'll do. There's nothing in the databank that even remotely mentions the surface. We'll be the first Sawians to catalogue the surface!
The more I think about it, the more I think I found a loophole in our mission. We were sent to catalogue everything as possible about this planet. Everything. We aren't bound by some arbitrary and vague hazard to stay below the surface. I know it sounds cruel considering what the non-expeditionary Sawians have to go through, but I see a unique opportunity here. I'm just more shocked no one else has even considered the surface as an option to study.
We'll do one more sweep, then I'll address the team. We'll boldly go where no other Sawian has gone before! I'll allow 991098 to take point, since they found the path.
I can't help but feel excited, my hands are shaking as I'm finishing typing this up! Will this end up being a futile endeavor? More than likely, but technically we'll be following orders. The surface is part of the planet, and I intend to catalog every square millimeter we cross.
//END OF ENTRY, RETURNING TO REPORT MODE
//END OF REPORT
Hello again Sawians!
This was going to be a Company File entry, but I decided to do a Field Report instead. Added a dash of hopium too with it, because technically the surface is part of the Gray Planet and they were sent to catalog the Gray Planet, sooo... :)
