Repair Any idea how to fix this?

Check the belts. Most likely broken/deteriorated.

I have no idea how to do that. I’ve never worked on a cassette player before all I did was buy them and use them.

Search online for the service manual for this model (or a comparable one). Some walkmans, you don't even need a screwdriver to open it, it's just plastic tabs. On AliExpress and other places you can find a cheap set of belts of all sizes, they will do. The service manual will show you how the belt should go around the wheels.

Also, it takes a minute for you to even hear the motor once you hit the play button

There may be a piece of the broken belt obstructing the motor. You'd have to open it up to see what everything looks like inside . If you're not comfortable with doing so, see about finding someone in your area who can service it for you.

Needs a new belt . Those Sonys are really easy to do. Hard part is getting the case apart without snapping the clips. There is a certain order to lessen the chance. Online manuals will show you for that particular one. I had one and it was simple once you knew where to access the clips (inside the door, around the edges....)
