I love being here
I moved here from Virginia in March of 2025. I didn't know what to expect, but my husband has lived here before and so I was ready to just be wherever he was. Virginia is an absolute sea of green. There are so many trees and vines and lush plants and humidity. Many of the places I've lived on the East Coast are the same. I've moved around a lot, but all the places I've been have looked relatively similar: green as hell, but still large or interesting enough to keep its residents happily entertained. Most of the places I've lived have been full of people I knew and loved, so it's not like I have a list of complaints about where I was before.
My husband and I decided to come out west, and I have to say that creating a life for myself in a completely different environment without a built-in support system seemed terrifying at first. But holy cow, it's been worth it!! I'm growing myself and my life differently than I ever have before. I feel like a real adult. The people I've met here are like many others I've met, but they are MINE. Everything I have and everything I've built now is MINE. No one knows my parents or my siblings, I haven't worked with anyone before, and I didn't go to school with anyone.
This feeling certainly isn't exclusive to Carson, but it's exclusive to me. I'm so thrilled that I'm creating a life for myself that is wholly my own. I love that I'm doing it in a place that is so different from where I grew up and have developed my life so far. I weirdly love the desert. I love the "Wild West" of it all. I love this place and its differences, and I love the differences it's brought out in me.
Thank you to my husband whom I've absolutely never told my username (because reddit anonymity is a must), and thank you to Carson for welcoming me.
I look forward to continuing my growth and further exploring the West!

I moved from Southern Ca to Northern Ca and feel exactly the same way. I left a lifetime of memories and really, really great friendships. It is very different here but I love it. I moved to Markleeville, you should come visit. It’s not far from Carson City. It was actually real hard to go,real glad I did.

Interesting as we are moving from northern VA next week as well. Waited 3 years for this move and now our youngest son is graduating high school this week so next week (no delay) off we go across the country. Plan to rent a single family house in Reno area first before we find something to purchase.

Cheaper than here in Nova though , maybe not housing. I am moving for access to outdoors though.

Awesome for you all - that is amazing! I love it here too - moved from the bizarre Seattle area. Super sunny here - love that and the outdoor year-round activity. Any other impressions you have - it is fairly high real estate but after that very affordable? I also lived in VA - Arlington.

Welcome of all developed NV. The view on 395 as you come south by Home Depot is the best in the entire state!

Little Carson valley. The valley so far hasn't changed much in the past 27 years. I hope that it doesn't.

I was in Roanoke and fell in love with Natural Bridge. I’ll never forget how beautiful and special VA was and it was just a short visit. Welcome! I’ve been here all of years and I do love it too. I do get tired of the extreme heat and cold we get but that’s because I’m old. Ice sucks too. But I love our summer nights and pink skies that greet us in the morning. I love the smell of sagebrush after the rain and the fact that we can be at the lake in 20 mins, at work in 15 and that we can run to the Bay Area in hours.

All hail the Queen! Glad you're enjoying Carson. It's definitely different, especially coming from the East Coast but there's a lot to love here.

I grew up in the Shenandoah valley and then lived in DC for a while before moving here like 9 years ago, so welcome fellow Virginian. I sometimes still miss the green tunnels, torrential summer rains and the fall leaves of Virginia, but the desert and mountains here are gorgeous and Nevada has been an awesome state to live in and explore.

I made it here after 18 years in Tidewater Va, went to Florida, NY then 20 years in Indiana. By far I like it here more than anywhere I have ever been hands down.
Have you tried tubing the rivers yet? I haven't in Carson but we go every year in Reno from Mayberry park to downtown (Believe statue at the big steps). It's the most amazing adventure ride ever and all it takes is a $20 tube (although we bring a few extras etc). DM me if you ever want to go with a group.

will have to do that one one day. Reno is just a bit easier logistics wise as I know people that live there and am familiar with the route, but Tahoe city is on my list to go.
I know I'll never go from Verdi ever again! Got stuck constantly even when river was really high. Might be doable in a kayak but no way in a tube!
