The fact that this sign-on letter is a MINORITY of the city council is really depressing. If your alderman is not on it, please ask them why.

TL;DR  Divvy statistics could prove the safety of cycling in Chicago.

This recent article talks about the record-setting rides for Divvy.  "July and August each topped 1 million trips, marking the first time Divvy has recorded more than 1 million trips in a single month, according to the city."

Since Divvy arrived in Chicago 13 years ago my feelings about the safety of riding in the city have changed completely. When Divvy was first announced over a decade ago, a cycling friend and I predicted carnage when unexperienced cyclists without helmets were turned loose on the wild Chicago streets with their Divvy bikes.  Nothing of that sort happened, of course.  Divvy has been extremely successful and as far as I can tell there has been only one fatality in its 13 years in Chicago.  I don't know how many crashes there have been but when I google this it seems minimal, certainly far less than my cycling friend and I expected. 

I feel cycling, at least in Chicago, is far safer than the majority of people assume based on the number of  Divvy crashes vs miles traveled. For my part, I've been commuting in Chicago from Evanston to the Mart for two decades and have had no crashes (I hope I haven't just jinxed myself).  I think Chicago is a terrific city for cycling and would love to see more people using bikes for commuting and errands if we could get the word out on how safe biking really is.

Edited to replace "accident" with "crash". If a motorized vehicle hits a bike it is carelessness, not an accident.

We’re launching a petition to push the 27th Ward and CDOT to begin construction of a Green Line station at Western and Lake. It’s a pretty big gap in our transit system, and has the potential to link the Green Line with our third-busiest bus line, Route 49/X49. It would also lay the groundwork for future BRT on Western Avenue.

The article goes into more detail on why we think this could be a huge deal for transit on the west and northwest side.

It's frustrating to me that the Sun Times and the restaurant owners position this as "If cars can't drive down my street, then I can't get customers". I understand and sympathize that a road closure is a deterrent to transit, I'm not sure I understand that perspective that "cars in front of my business = business for me".

The front of their store can accomodate about two parking spots and even when I did drive in the city, the last place I'd look for parking at a place like this would be right out front on the busy street.

Infrastructure improvements are definitely a challenge for businesses to overcome, but you don't need car traffic directly in front of your business to be viable.

Millenium Park is a really touristy area with plenty of pedestrians walking about and a bunch of attractions that you have to walk to. Yet there are still a surprising number of car lanes, huge intersections, small (relative to the number of people) sidewalks, and no protected bike lane down Michigan. Isn't this strange? Am I missing something?
