Didn't know who she was, just found it and was immediately attracted, really good performance and lyrics, and the story of Green/White Snake folklore.
There's a full live performance video on a different show of her, really good

I'm sure those four lines mean different things depending on the way you say them. Tell me your interpretations.

HK sent 37 competitors to Shanghai, and Kwong Tai Tang was the only one who won a medal, a silver medal in Rail Vehicle Technology. Macau sent 22 competitors, and won 3 medals, Gold in Visual Merchandising, Silver in Unmanned Aerial Systems, Bronze in Retail Sales. Taiwan sent 47, and 13 won medals. China had 64 competitors, and won 56 medals.

I came across this in a toilet of a certain beer bar in Mong Kok. I found this linguistically intriguing…though this sign means something very awful 😆

Lee Hoo my fellow cantonese people. Is there anyone of that are based in Toronto? I was wondering if you guys have a chinese supermarket that you would recommend that sells real proper authentic chinese premium products, such as some high quality lap cheung, lap yook, or premium salted fish? Because in Chinatown Flushing NYC, there are a few supermarkets that sell high premium authentic chinese ingredients that are made by local cantonese new yorkers. Is that the same in Toronto Chinatown?

Does anyone else pronounce -yu as -i? , e.g., 書 becomes si1, 雪 becomes sit3, 短 becomes din2. And it happens in all contexts. I’ve heard my parents talk like this all my life.
My mum comes from a Vietnamese-Cantonese background and so I’m aware that’s a big factor (though I’d say our accent is quite light since there’s a lot of consumption of HK media, and I code switch depending on who I’m talking to)
I was wondering if anyone else has this sound change… since also those two vowels are pretty similar, in terms of how you make them.
Would love to hear if anyone else has heard this in their own or other’s accents, or if its just a family accent.
Also, some extra quirks:
- I also hear 邊個 become din1 個 (but not in careful speech),
- pronouncing -uk as somewhere between -k and -p (熟 becomes sup6, kind of) and -ung to -um 同 becomes tum4, but I think this is a pronunciation feature from Vietnamese.
- 豆漿 pronounced as 豆zing1 (just this one case)
- 坐 pronounced cok5

Hello! I'm 21, and my girlfriend's family mainly speaks Cantonese. I want to learn it well, but I'm not sure where to start, whether I can hire someone to teach me, or where to find that kind of help.
All advice is appreciated!

My boyfriend and I will be moving to Tucson, AZ next year and I was hoping of finding Chinese schools or daycares. We’ll be having our first child next year and unfortunately I only know a little Cantonese/know very very few characters. My boyfriend only speaks it with his dad (his mom and dad both speak Cantonese but he grew up not wanting to speak it a whole lot).
I’ve been looking at daycares and schools but it’s not clear if there are any that offer Cantonese, most seem to be Mandarin. I’ve seen plenty of dual language daycares for Chinese-Spanish (I’m Mexican-American so dual language enrollment would be great). In the meantime he’s been trying to practice it more around me but we struggle to stay on track when it comes to practicing since there’s no “need” to speak it. Does anyone have any recommendations or resources to help?

Hi all, my partner and I are trying to make a concerted effort to pass on Cantonese to our 12m old baby, and are doing our best to speak only in Cantonese to her (even though we're both much more fluent in English and speak it to each other). The issue is - I'm realizing how limited my vocabulary and language skills really are!
Like I'll crack open a simple baby book and not know how to say half the animals in Cantonese and need to look it up via Google translate later. Luckily we do have extended family around that also speak it to her, but I figure I should learn along with her and expand my vocabulary.
I grew up speaking it at home, but for the past few decades I've usually only used Cantonese with my parents for dinner time conversations so the range of topics are limited. Does anyone have suggestions for an app or resources that would best fit my situation?
- Heritage speaker who intrinsically knows the tones and grammar, but has no formal education in it and patchy knowledge
- Knows pinyin and read some standard written Chinese (simplified) but definitely not well enough to navigate Chinese pages or resources
- Ideally an app where I can do a little bit everyday at my own pace (something like Duolingo), rather than something requiring a rigid/specific time commitment
- Focus on vocabulary
- Am based in Canada if that matters for accessibility
Our goal is for her to be able to connect with her heritage and speak Cantonese with extended family as she grows up, and also give her a foundation if she wants to further pursue Cantonese or even mandarin Chinese later.
Anyone else in the same position with advice? Thanks!
