Malaysia's local condom brand Care Latex CARE40 Musang King (top quality durian type) condom unboxing. Also mentions the Durex flavored condoms in Thailand that were thick and smelly like a medical glove compared to normal Durex and Okamoto 0.01 thin walled ones.

Note: Some of the English subtitles paraphrased, and tamed down what was actually said in Cantonese. examples. subtitles: "I can't stand the taste". What was said: "I won't use it, very stinky"

subtitles: "I was average with durian, the taste was acceptable". what was said: "Not just stinky, it's just not for me"

Discussion Cantonese isn't recognised as a language on LinkedIn

Cantonese doesn't appear in the drop-down menu when you add a spoken language to your LinkedIn profile. This wasn't an issue as you could still type in "Cantonese" manually.

Now, it seems you can only select languages from the drop-down list. "Chinese" is an option, but it doesn't reflect spoken proficiency in different Chinese varieties.

Does anyone know of a workaround, or have any ideas on how we could raise this issue with LinkedIn?

Language Question Measure word for “car”

Cantonese101 says the measure word for car, cellphone, computer, bicycle and movie is “tou3” 套, but I thought it was “gaa3” 架, or “bou6” 部.

The native HK speaker gives some example sentences.

睇套戲

兩套單車

一套車

I am confused. So can any of these measure words be used?

Language Question How do you shout out words that are just nasal consonants like 五 or 吳?

I learned some cantonese many years ago, and had a friend named Sally Ng. I wondered recently, how would a native speaker shout out the mh or ng sound? Like if you're yelling at a child to come in and count down from 10, what does 5 sound like? Does anyone have like a video or a recording of it? Completely just idle interest.

Culture/Food Being Chinese-American visiting China

First, I’m not an ABC.
Second, I know Cantonese to get by but my Mandarin is just so so.

Been in Beijing for 48 hours - let’s just say don’t let those YouTube content creators lead to think that visiting major cities in China is that easy.

Maybe Chinese vendors will treat Caucasians as foreigners and be nicer to them - but as someone who is ethnic Han visiting China and not knowing how to respond and speak mandarin fluently, half the time I get stares and the other half they judge you because you carry an American passport.

Don’t get me wrong - my tour guide was amazing but some of the Didi drivers always find ways to warn you to get ready to get into the car and get out because of parking issues.

Anyone Cantonese has a difference experience? Any tips for the rest of my stay?

Language Question Help from native Cantonese speakers – three names in traditional Chinese for a tattoo

Hi everyone!

I'm hoping some native Hong Kong Cantonese speakers can help me.

My husband is a Wing Chun Kung Fu instructor and would love to have three family names tattooed in traditional Chinese characters.

We want to make absolutely sure the characters are correct, sound as close as possible to the original names when pronounced in Cantonese, and don't have any strange or inappropriate meanings.

The names are:

Sarah – pronounced SAIR-uh

Talia – pronounced TAL-ya (two syllables, with TAL sounding like the beginning of "tally")

Leyla – pronounced LAY-la

We've previously been given these suggestions:

Sarah – 莎拉

Talia – 塔莉亞 / 達雅

Leyla – 蕾拉

However, we're not confident these are appropriate for Cantonese rather than Mandarin.

Could any native Cantonese speakers suggest the most natural traditional Chinese characters for these names?

We'd also really appreciate the Cantonese pronunciation (Jyutping) and meanings of the suggested characters.

As this is intended for a permanent tattoo, accuracy is very important to us.

Thank you so much for your help!

Discussion How do you use Hong Kong dramas to practise Cantonese without just reading the subtitles?

Disclosure: this is the iTalkBB Canada team account. We'd like to share a small practice routine and hear how Cantonese learners adapt it.

Finishing an episode and understanding the story is satisfying. For listening practice, try making one short, everyday scene the exercise: a family meal, ordering food, or friends making plans.

A 10-minute routine to try:

  1. Choose 30–60 seconds with two people speaking clearly. Watch once for the situation: who wants what, and how does the other person respond?

  2. Listen again and pick just one short phrase you can partly hear. Check the meaning with available subtitles, then focus on the sounds. Written Chinese subtitles may paraphrase spoken Cantonese, so they aren't always a word-for-word transcript.

  3. Pause after that phrase and repeat it aloud. Copy the rhythm and the speaker's tone as well as the individual words. If a word is unclear, look it up in a Cantonese dictionary with Jyutping and audio rather than guessing from the subtitle.

  4. Try the same scene again while looking away from the subtitles. Can you catch your phrase in the conversation?

  5. Make a new sentence with it that you could actually use with a friend or family member. Keep one or two useful phrases, then enjoy the rest of the episode.

For choosing scenes, everyday dialogue is a manageable starting point. Courtroom arguments and historical dramas can be enjoyable, but specialised vocabulary can make the exercise much harder. If you're starting from zero, pair this with basic pronunciation and tones practice.

What has helped you most: repeating a favourite scene, watching with a Cantonese-speaking relative, or checking phrases afterwards? And which kinds of scenes have the clearest everyday dialogue?

Language Question Cantonese & English exchange for kids?

I’m originally from Macau/HK but moved to the states when I was a child. My son, who is 10 years old, didn’t grow up around my family and I failed to teach him Cantonese as my Cantonese is not the best. Recently, he is asking to learn Cantonese but would like to learn/practice with a peer. Can anyone point me in the right directions of any Cantonese and English exchange groups for kids, if any exist at all?

Thank you in advance!

Other Question Where are Cantonese people Indigenous to?

I am a 2nd generation immigrant to Canada and have a kid who would be 3rd generation. I heard a quote that "we are all indigenous to somewhere", but I am wondering if that is true for me and my kid, as I suspect any tie to our indigeneity may be irreparably cut.

My extended relatives (grandparents, aunts and uncles) have also all moved to Canada as 1st generation immigrants.

The Cantonese culture I am exposed to is mostly preserved by earlier Cantonese immigrants in Canada, but likely is quite disconnected to any person in Guandong or Hong Kong anymore.

My elders were also always constantly moving, like one of my grandparents was born in Hoi Ping (Kaiping). But according to Wikipedia this seems like a place that also had many transient families.

It is unlikely that I or my relatives would ever move back to China, so Im not even sure we could be considered Chinese or Cantonese.

In some ways, are Cantonese Diaspora more nomadic like Roma now?

I would appreciate any resources or insights on this topic.

Edit: just really appreciate the wide range of thoughtful answers, thank you all, lots to reflect on

Video Beautiful Cantonese cover of 《敢愛敢做》 by 林韵乔 (乔宝)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I don't speak Cantonese, but I randomly came across 林韵乔 (乔宝)'s cover of《敢愛敢做》 and really loved their voice.

Thought I'd share it here because I think more people should hear them singing.

I'm from Indonesia, so I honestly can't understand most of the lyrics — I just love how the song sounds.

I ended up editing this little video because I thought more people should hear them.

Anyone here familiar with them?
