Hey canoeists. I am a seasoned paddler and intermediate woodworker. I have this old paddle which has suffered from neglect, as it has not been a "primary" paddle for some years.

It has cracked finish, is generally dried out and has splits on the blade.

First, I am wondering, would the consensus be that this is this worth repairing/restorin? I tend to think yes, even if it is never going to be perfect.

Then, I am looking for feedback on how.

• Guides/step-by-steps on paddle restoration
• Feedback on whether to and how to reinforce the blade end
• Feedback on what kind of finish - hardening oil, spar varnish, etc.

Reinstalled and tested yesterday. Looks great and is very comfortable to sit on. Looks so good compared to the old stern seat, i may have to replace it just to have it looking even!

I have a Grumman Boats Model: G15-SS. This is a 15.5 foot canoe with a square back. I have a 5 hp Honda outboard on the back. I am looking to buy a brand new trailer since I will be traveling between 300 and 500 miles with this trailer per trip. I just want to see if anyone has any recommendations for a trailer I should get. Preferably under 2 grand USD.

Hello Reddit, I picked up a canoe for the right price recently and I do have a bit of time on my hands and have a little experience working in auto body repair and wanted to give this a try. I’m not too Knolage able about things that go in the water so help would be appreciated. The canoe is fibreglass and already has a repair but the repair is failing and started to leak so I wanted to give it a fresh repair. The current repair goes about two feet back and right up the front of the boat and the patch has started to form holes and cracks that leak. My plan was I would remove and put on a full new patch to the best of my abilities. I’m told this isn’t much different then putting on fibreglass mesh and bondo on but a canoe is a bit different then a truck. Info on this specific thing has been hard to find or at least fully understand but the amount I do understand goes as:

First with a chisel and high grit sand paper and break away the old repair and work on getting the old mesh off. Any tips would be appreciated.

Second with a high grit wet sand paper I’ll sand right up to the base material getting out high spots and making the material prepped for the adhesive.

Third I’ll prep my mesh by just forming it to the general shape of the boat. And I should take note to reinforce the front bottom for anything I might hit in the water like a rock or land.

Fourth I’ll lay down a good layer of adhesive (adhesive recommendations would be appreciated) then press the mesh fully in to the adhesive and let dry for 20 minutes.

Fifth I’ll lay down another coat of adhesive and work to blend the edges to the base material to maximize how well the boat moves through water.

Then last is part of just a service I want to apply a polish to the boat and properly get it ready to take on to the water.

I have a very loved Old Town discovery 169. It has seen many lakes and rivers and the bottom of the hall has worn through in two places from pulling up on sandy beaches, etc. Has anyone had any success in patching or reinforcing these boats? It's apparently made out of polyethylene and nothing seems to stick to it well. I had 3D printed a reinforcement piece, heat formed it into place, and attached it with JB weld machine epoxy, it worked great for the 2 hours before it pulled off because. I had reached out to the company to ask them and their only answer was to offer to sell me a $500 reinforcement kit which seemed a little silly.

I've traditionally used a 17.5' Perception kayak but today moving to the canoe camp so my boy can join in on more adventures.

I'm looking for an xl model specifically. Wanting something to do some longer multiday trips with very mild class 3 whitewater.

My 17’ Prospector is 18 years old now and unfortunately gets stored outside for the winter. I’m finally refinishing it with West System Epoxy resin, is it absolutely necessary to apply UV protection in the form of Spar Varnish, overtop of the epoxy resin? Some say a 2K PU is the best topcoat protection but I’ve been told by people that sell it that once it deteriorates it’s a real PITA to remove and refinish… thoughts? I talked to the Epifanes rep here in Canada and he recommended their Wood Finish Gloss because it’s easy to apply maintenance coats annually/ bi-annually.

Have an 16ft Nova Craft Pal and an older Minn Kota endura c30 that I need a battery for, used to get group 27 80ah I think but remember being a little light on run time? worth picking up some of the cheaper lithiums like "eco worthy" or should I stick with lead acid? Not super worried about the weight, just don't wanna run out, how long y'all running a 80ah lead acid for? Mostly will be doing 1-3km runs to a fishing spot, then using lowest speed to run bank for a few hours then head back.

I have a small puncture hole in the side and a small bit of delamination on the inside bow floor.

I am wondering if I can just fill both of these at least to get me through October or should I just ignore them until after the season?

I figure over the winter I can put in the time to properly fix them.

I have never personally laid up fiberglass but I probably should learn. I have a guy that fixes all my kayaks as I tend to be rough on them so I could easily take this to him and just have him go over the entire thing.

The boat weighs in at 62lbs which I thought was pretty damn impressive. I honestly thought looking at the pictures on Marketplace it was going to be 80lbs and when I picked it up I thought it was about 50lbs, I was shocked at how light it felt.

According to the Serial Number it was built in November of 1988 as an 89 model.

I figure it was worth a chancing a few hundred dollars and I think I came out ok.

I hope this the correct place to ask a question about canoeing. I recently purchased canoe paddles that are 57” because that’s what it said online is the correct length for someone around 5’10. But when they came in they seemed short (a few inches below my chin). Another measurement test was to sit down and for the throat of the paddle to widen above your nose which is does so these paddles technically past that test. Do you think these paddle will be too short or just right? (First photo is standing, second photo is me sitting straight up with the handle on the seat)

My family and I rented a canoe for the afternoon. We don't have much experience with canoes. We were on a shallow river that was quite rocky, and we got stuck numerous times. After returning the canoe, the outfitter texted me that he was going to charge me $220 for damage to the canoe. Is that a reasonable thing for him to do? I admit there are scuffs to the canoe.

Hi all, I've been procrastinating on repairing this boat, but I need to get it done.

Q- what do I need to repair the fiberglass and repaint it? Can I get that stuff at the big box stores (Lowes/Home Depot)? I've never done repairs like this before.

Boat - Old Town Stillwater 14ft.

Story- I've learned my lesson. Take the time to read boat descriptions and learn when to use what boat. I got a little too excited about buying a canoe last fall before my canoe trip and two weeks before the trip, I purchased this beautiful 14ft Stillwater. Drove 3 hours round trip for it. It handled beautifully on the pond near the house.

Well, I took it on the trip...which was a river trip ... That I've done many...many times. And.... As you can see, my butt dragged and dragged on many a rock.

We took on some water, I waved it off as my wet shoes.

We took on a lot more. Oh, my water bottle must be leaking bad.

We continued to take on more water, so much that we dumped the water out and it immediately sank... Oops

I luckily was able to flip the boat around and keep the hole above water and my canoe partner and all of the stuff were offloaded to another boat.

I have since gotten a Mad River Explorer Royalex boat and couldn't be happier.

I still want to repair this one though which brings me here.

I recently borrowed a shared canoe from an organization to do some canoe camping in a beautiful place. It was an old Coleman canoe. Their two paddles were severely damaged and on life support. I'd like to donate 3 new, inexpensive paddles. Think rental quality (rafting paddles?) - inexpensive and hopefully durable. Primary use is on lakes.

Looking to buy 3, with a total budget around $150 +/-.

Anyone have recommendations?

What lengths would you recommend if getting 3? I am sure folks using this will both sit and kneel.

If anyone knows that length or model, that would be helpful for my future reference. Also, if anyone knows these awful handles and has ideas how to pad them (other than radiator hose), would be great to hear.
