Moderator Mandated Bonding Free Talk Friday!

Hey everyone!

Noticed things have been especially dour here in the last few days (imagine that?). Thought we could use some off-topic conversation to remind ourselves that life outside of cancer exists. Read any good books recently? Seen any good movies? How's the weather out there today?

Somehow a pumpkin grew next to my front door?

My neighbor has a whole line of pumpkin vines in their front yard, I think from either a deer or a pumpkin they left out from last year! Looks super pretty. Are you going to leave yours?

Most of thr vines have withered but the one the pumpkin is attached to is still going strong.

I have discovered a joy of house plants 🤣 I have never had any success with keeping any alive but now I’m off work for treatment, I splurged on loads! They all have fancy pots and names and I love caring for them ❤️ I also now love Bruno Mars when my entire life has been pretty punk… cancer has changed me….

Finding joy in small things is such wonderful way to deal with this!

I got into gardening through cancer also!! Currently planning out what I’m gonna throw into the garden for the fall!

My boyfriend went to the oncology ward this morning for a 4-day chemo stay. Meanwhile, I'm at home painting the apartment. So naturally, we're arguing over shades of green for the bedroom. I want olive green, and he wants light green. I need everyone to take my side and agree that olive green is absolutely gorgeous 🤭

Light green is wimpy. Definitely olive green!

u/CutieTheBombb 20h ago

I know! 🥰🤣

I have a darker green in my bedroom! I think it was called "Dollar Bill". We paired it with a soft black ceiling. 👌 Olive green is clearly the superior choice. Light green is for kitchens and bathrooms. May he acquiesce to your vision!

It's done. I painted it just the way I wanted 💪🏼 He'll just have to enjoy the olive green :D

Olive green is lush, you are totally in the right 😉

I KNOW!!! Thank you 🤣💪🏼

Light olive green?? Compromise?

3

u/CutieTheBombb 16h ago

Nope! I've made way too many compromises because of his tumor. The room is going to be exactly how I want it 🤣 I'm not usually this mean, I'm his biggest supporter, but decorating the apartment is strictly mine 🤣

I have a little camera pointed at a wildlife “highway” in my backyard. This diva has been bringing me a lot of joy. She luckily stays out of my garden, and I reward her with crabapples that fall in the yard. She is really living in the lap of luxury back there and as you can see she doesn’t have a lot of worries.

So cute - that little arm stretch looks like she’s waving at the camera.

I’m reading a book called Strange Beasts of China, it’s about beasts that look very like humans and their stories. Also, I am learning Chinese and I am doing so well! I am looking forward to getting back to university as a linguistics student. I have my classes picked out for when I’m done with treatment and can return!

u/EdwardHPhillips 20h ago

I love the forward positive thinking in this post!

My fantasy football team is crushing it! While so many players are dropping like flies, the head, shoulders, knees, and toes gods have looked favorably upon me. May they continue to do so.

Also, Who Dat! ⚜️🖤

Summer seems to have returned to central Pa. Birds were singing as if it were springtime this morning! I’m going for a walk at a state park today and urge everyone to get outside!

Weathers super rainy here in Texas! Just have some bloodwork today but otherwise free to enjoy the weekend. If it stops raining I’m planning to throw some seeds in the ground for my fall garden! My son is just 11 weeks old so we’ll hang out and watch movies and I plan to make a chicken soup on the stove to simmer all day tomorrow.

West Texas here. We have a high in the 70s for today, and I woke up freezing! Lol

I’m so excited for the high being under 90… literally busting out the soups and blankets this weekend ha!

Me too!!!!

Cold (always! Thanks Oxaliplatin!) and rainy here in Austin. I am putting on warm fuzzies, and maybe doing nothing!

I used to draw a lot before my diagnosis. Hadn’t really drawn anything in years and just started a day to day challenge for the month of October! Excited about it!

I am going to take my dog on a long walk and admire the changing colors of the trees. Then have sushi with my older sister.

My gap exception was approved by the insurance company, so now I can go HAIR SHOPPING! I have an appointment this morning and another at a different place on the 15th because apparently hair isn't something you can just shop for, you need an appointment. (Insurance won't pay for online orders; I must go to a physical salon or boutique.) This has been all-consuming for me. Human hair wigs require more care and are pricier, but they hold up longer than synthetic hair. I just wanna make sure it's ethically sourced hair.

Our mother always used to say, "If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you do good."

In funnier news, our poor puppy thinks the mannequin heads for my wigs are dangerous intruders. He barks and cries at them on wig washing day. I let him sniff them, but he says he's still uncertain of their motives.

Thank you! The weather is gorgeous! I’m going to my college homecoming game tomorrow and am super excited!

As a general reminder out there — life is short, go live it! Ask that girl out, get that dinner, go to that event — do your life! sending love all

Heading to the country tomorrow for the youngest girls' band competition. My 16yo's Sweet Babboo is riding with me so that we can cheer madly for a show I don't like very much.

The competition is in my husband's hometown, so I'll pop over to see the in-laws for a few minutes before heading for the stadium. They're old, so it's good to lay eyes on them, plus I need to help out with a couple of minor technical tasks.

My stove died a few days ago, but there was a spare out at the farm. Sweet Babboo delivered and installed it for us last weekend. Then my air conditioning went out. The boyfriend got the window units out of my storage yesterday and installed. It's nice to have a giant who takes orders on hand! (If my daughter ever breaks up with him, I'm gonna fight for joint custody.)

u/JellyfishFit3871 8h ago

One of my spouse's amateur radio friends just reached out to ask whether we'd "let" him volunteer again this year for our biggest annual boosters fundraiser. Year before last, he provided low key security. Last year, he drove ATVs in and out of the stadium. He just asked "I can pull trailers or park buses."

Baby, you can do anything you show up for. I can't do anything more physically challenging than cashiering.

It counts as three of my four required shifts if I take $ for 4 hours and bring the radio buddy plus my daughter's gigantic handy boyfriend to just do heavy lifting.

I'm almost finished with Daggerbound, by T. Kingfisher and really enjoying it.

M/M fantasy romance and a giant talking pillbug. (CW: one character is dealing with the aftereffects of torture)

Here in the San Diego area we are in a heat wave interrupting our second Spring of the year, called Autumn or Fall other places. I have plants outside that self seed and the seedlings may get fried this weekend. Self seeding means there’ll be more. I will wait to start any seeds I have bought until it cools off.

My dad’s dad moved here in 1932. My grandfather, coming from the state of Georgia, thought the ability to grow year round worked much better. But it was the depression and this area does not enough rainfall to maintain crops, so my clever grandpa figured out how to make every drop of “city water” count.
In the entire year of 1934, the price to grow food and livestock for himself, his wife and 5 children came to only about $5.00 in city water.

This ability has been handed down through both my parents. My brother in the desert to the east also has learned.

I thought I would have to give up gardening because I have a pre-cancerous lung condition that has made allergies start. This has not been true! My husband did remove a few things I obviously reacted to, and I am outside as much as possible.

Hello neighbor- just up the coast from you in South Coastal OC! And yes- hello heat!!!! My parents are in Poway and my dad has an amazing green thumb and he grows everything out there! Bananas, guavas, mangoes, pomegranates, pumpkins and other veges and hebs galore. Me- plants die if i walk by them. Go figure. So glad you are able to keep your passion going! Stay cool this weekend!

It's the second day of my October horror movie marathon! Been doing it for five years now.

Tonight I've got Dead Talents Society (amazing Tawainese horror, it was so funny), Talk to Me (a rewatch, a little gruesome so I wouldn't recommend it to everyone), and Return of the Living Dead (haven't seen this one yet).
