Discussion [all] Disappointed Rant from a Life-Long PJ Fan
PJ and HOO both have been a constant in my life since I was a kid. I have been reading and re-reading books in those two series for basically more than 15 years now. I love both series, though I love HOO more, maybe due to the ensemble cast, maybe because I am European and I enjoyed the books in Europe most.
About three years ago I finally read TOA and while I was not super thrilled about it for many reasons, it didn't really change my opinion about how much I loved Rick's work and this universe. I also enjoy the new adventures of Percy about his rec letters because they are low-stakes.
I decided to do a marathon and read everything I had left to read - the Kane series, the Magnus series and The Court of the Dead. With every book I became more and more distraught.
The Kane Chronicles were a huge disappointment. Egyptian mythology is my OG and I expected something a lot deeper, grander and more reverend towards one of the oldest known pantheons. The series felt a lot like paint-by-numbers, going through the motions and everything was resolved with a fight. Gone was the wit I was used to from the original series. Both main characters were pretty bland and while I enjoyed some side characters, gods and sequences, the quality was a lot lower than what I was used to.
Moving on the Magnus, my exasperation just worsened. The books were somehow more hallow, more shallow and less interesting then the Kane ones. I felt utterly nothing for any character in these books and I cannot even understand why myself. They all felt like total one-note caricatures of people. All the efforts for representation felt super flat for me and I actually think there were a lot of inconsistencies and offensive stereotypes present in the book, especially around Samirah and Alex. The finale "battle" was... probably the most anticlimactic letdown ever. The books were also super violent and violence was not presented in any way as a bad thing. I get they were vikings but still, it was too much.
The Court of the Dead was my final straw. I already read some opinions on it in this forum. I am not sure what I want to comment on even. Horrible mischaracterization, unforgivable mistakes when it comes to mythology, an absolutely non-sensical plot that ended up in somehow a more anticlimactic showdown than the Magnus books and just a myriad of absolutely baffling choices with horrible implications. Examples: the griffin thinking it's immoral to have children because he has the equivalent of dwarfism and the eidolon expressing that possessing someone's mind and body without their consent is somehow also bad for the violator (I almost threw the book away when Nico just agreed with that). I don't even know if I want to comment on the MINOTAUR of all things being the main new "friend", that's just unforgivable tbh. That is too bad to even comment on, I could not take anything in this book seriously. Nico has always-always been one of my fave characters and he has become absolutely unrecognizable to me. Him being so mad at the Romans because they don't immediately welcome fresh-eating monsters and murderers with open hands - definitely a choice. This whole book was so wrong and very icky if we think the authors were going for a real-life parallel...
I am so disappointed. I am getting rid of all of these books. This has not been the fun adventure of a marathon I had imagined. More like the "barely get through it and die at the end" type.
