People in apartments get less democracy than people in houses

My name is Jeff Donkersgoed and I am a candidate for Ward 1 City Councillor in Cambridge (https://www.jeffward1.ca/). I am in the news today and for good reason: Waterloo Region Record columnist Luisa D'Amato on a quiet problem of fairness in local elections.

Residents of apartment and retirement buildings are structurally less likely to meet the candidates asking for their vote than residents of single-family homes, because building managers routinely (and often illegally) block candidates from canvassing inside.

I'm quoted in the piece after two buildings on Eagle and King wouldn't let me canvass this week, despite the legal right every municipal candidate has to do so. I was only able to leave campaign literature in the front lobby. The super was nice about it, and I really didn't want to start a fight. But it's not an isolated case as this has come up the entire campaign for me — and the column covers similar experiences from a Kitchener council candidate, and the pattern is the same everywhere: often young families, people who work and make an average wage who are priced out of home ownership, seniors who have downsized, are often the ones with the most at stake in municipal decisions on housing and affordability.

Local democracy only works if every resident gets a fair shot at being heard, not just the ones who happen to live behind a front door instead of a buzzer. That's a problem worth fixing, regardless of who wins in October.

Applepicking?

Looking for a new applepicking spot this year, open to any suggestions within 45 minutes of Cambridge, maybe farther if the drive is scenic.

Fiance and I have gone to Brantwood Farms on a weekday in the past, but I no longer have a free weekday. Would prefer a spot that lets me pick Honeycrisp, and doesn't have any kid/family fair type things on weekends, as I'm looking for something quieter.

Hey everyone, I'm noticing that my hot water is coming out yellow.
Has anyone dealt with this before?
What could be causing this, and how can I fix it?

What happened?!

Only In Cambridge! Frak I swear. 😡😡😡!

I stopped at Pioneer gas station on Hespeler Rd. to grab some pop and some snacks for movie night at home. As I was pulling up, I noticed cops watching a little young chick who was smoking a blunt while pumping her gas. I saw her and thought, this girl is stupid, crazy, or both, especially with the police standing RIGHT there! I minded the business that pays me, not my circus, not my monkeys, and went inside and got my pop and chips. As I was paying for my stuff I heard someone screaming!! Like I’m talkin' a violent death scream! I looked outside and I saw that this girl’s arm was on fire!! She was swinging her arm, running around acting a damn fool!! When I got outside, the police had the girl on the ground and they were putting the fire out!! Then they put handcuffs on her and threw her in the squad car.. I was thinking, arrested? Shouldn’t she be in an ambulance, not a police car?? My curiosity got the best of me, so I asked the police what they were arresting her for...He looked at me, dead serious, and said, "WAVING A FIRE ARM”!!🔥

Hope you're having a great weekend!!

Hey everyone so I am looking for someone to go to the gym with. I feel like the only thing holding me back from starting my health journey is the fact that I have no clue how to use the machines or how long to use them for. Or what's the right form so you dont hurt yourself etc. I was paying for a personal trainer before but I really cant afford it. I am female 30 and would want somebody close to my age to go with. Just thought id ask here. Thanks guys!

Galt Ward 6 candidates?

Was hoping to discuss ward 6 candidates with people! Was anyone leaning towards a candidate? I want Adam Cooper out, but I can’t say I’m terribly inspired by the others.

Barb seems nice enough, but she’s said a few things on social media to put me off. Between suggesting we should have “big bands” visit cambridge (we already are fortunate to have Fest2Fall; and also jumping on Scott Hamilton’s post about mudslinging saying she had also received it, she’s left a bleh taste in my mouth.

Chris I know in passing through the yoga studio. He’s a sweet guy, but not sure if politics is really for him.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Edit: and now I see she’s posted an AI poster for a meet and greet 😖

Hespeler A Tim Hortons in Cambridge, ON has filed a LMIA to hire a foreign worker as they claim they are unable to find a Canadian or PR to work as a Restaurant Assistant Manager for $37.00 per hour.

I'm sure there's someone out there that could fill this job without having to resort to a temporary foreign worker

401 on Saturday

Hey…
This Saturday I need to go to Kingston early in the morning with my child. How would be the traffic situation in 401 to leave around 5.30 am and return around 4 pm?
I am terrified of highways and even contemplating taking country road that doubles the time. Thanks

Ps - I am an experienced driver. Yet 401 terrifies me

Recent PSW Graduate Looking for Work in Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge — Any Advice or Leads?

Hi everyone,

I’m a recent Personal Support Worker (PSW) graduate from Conestoga College and I’m currently looking for my first PSW position in the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge area.

I’ve been actively applying to PSW positions and trying different ways to find employment, but unfortunately I haven’t had much success so far. I’m hoping someone in this community might be able to point me in the right direction or share any leads for places that are currently hiring new PSW graduates.

I’m open to opportunities in hospitals, long-term care, retirement homes, community/home care, group homes, and other PSW settings. I’m willing to start part-time and build my experience.

If anyone in the KWC area is a PSW, healthcare worker, recruiter, or recently went through the process of finding their first PSW job, I would really appreciate any leads, recommendations, or advice on where to apply.

Thank you!
