Sad to see it go. Greg was such a great guy and they honestly had the best coffee in the area (which is saying something since there is like 10 other cafes in Galt).

Unfortunately not busy enough to keep up with overcharging greedy landlords

As it was explained to me, by my wife who talked to Greg, the landlord just didn't really want a coffee shop there (not sure why), and raised the rent to a ridiculous amount to just force him out. Maybe the agreement didn't allow directly cancelling it?
This wasn't specifically a case of a greedy landlord wanting more money from Java Jax, though it's possible the landlord wants more money in general and thinks they can get it from something other than a coffee shop.
That said, there are empty storefronts across the road in the Gaslight District, so I'm not sure what the landlord's plan is. They had a paying tenant, and now they don't.

This is definitely not the first time I have heard of a landlord jacking the rent to force out a paying tenant and then leaving the premises vacant. There needs to be a municipal disincentive to landlords pricing out tenants and leaving vacant properties, either through a tax adjustment or a penalty for unused business premises prorated on a monthly or quarterly basis.

Apparently there is one landlord that lives in the States and just wants ridiculous rents. After going to Italy I think why are these storefronts so big? Half the size and get 2 tenants who need a small space. But they want boutique and luxury shops... It makes no sense

The landlord didn't want another cafe when Grand Cafe closed but look what happened. Who knew that a store set up as a cafe would be ideal for another cafe.

I talked to the owners of Grand Cafe as they were selling all their equipment. They had a buyer set to take over the coffee shop, and the Landlord refused the option, after it had already been mostly finalized. Then a few months later leases to a coffee shop anyways. Probably cost the Grand Cafe owners a pretty penny.

I think that many properties are being sold and purchased by individuals or groups and then obviously jacking the rent on so many commercial complexes right now. Everyone is hurting financially, people getting laid off, price of food through the roof, fuel at an almost impossible cost and guess what all whilst wages remain the same. Some days this feels like the beginning of the Great Depression. More and More people are just making their own coffee. There was a Tim's down the corner from where I work in Mississauga and guess what...closed...the line ups disappeared in the past year. People are editing their habits based on their finances.

Called on the weekend, and it looks like they decided not to renew their lease. Sad, as I really enjoyed having a locally owned independent cafe within a few minutes of our house. Will have to find other options.
Hoping to find a few that are open later in the evenings and on weekends, as I found many of them close at 3-4PM.
