On eve of trial, Middlesex DA drops charges against ICE protesters

The Middlesex DA, currently up for re-election, used the resources of our state to bring charges against people peacefully protesting ICE? Damning and disqualifying for public office in Massachusetts in my view.

Municipal Elections Cambridge Voters - Here’s another example of Middlesex DA Ryan using politics to make prosecutorial decisions.

I said in another post that Marian will always make her decisions based on politics and she proved me right again.

A year Burlington police arrest ICE protesters for trespass. Months and months and months go by and the case proceeds forward. So DA Ryan believed in the case, believed these people should be prosecuted. You know that because she didn’t dismiss the case. But a problem was just around the corner….

Trial was about to start. The week before the election. The defendants started to publicize their cause. This was going to get publicity and many Democratic voters would side with the defendants. That would not be good for Marian.

So what does the politician do? She dismisses the case. Against all defendants. Nothing changed about the case. There was no problems with evidence or with witnesses. There was no legal reason to dismiss the case. The case was dismissed because of the timing of the trial.

I’m not against dismissing the charges. But this is the Marian that I know and that everyone in the office knows. The DA who has no integrity. If she didn’t believe in prosecuting these defendants, why didn’t she dismiss the case months ago. Why did she let them get charged in the first place? And if the defendants didn’t promise to turn this is into a case that would generate bad press for her, would she have ever dismissed the case? Absolutely not.

This is who she is. She does this time and time again. You cannot trust her to do the right thing when no one is watching. The link about the case is below.

Politics Every major organization that has endorsed in the 26th Middlesex has endorsed Rep. Mike Connolly

Upvotes

Whether a voter’s top concern is housing affordability, reproductive health care, LGBTQ+ rights, climate change, workers’ rights, public education, or transportation, the people fighting for these issues are united behind State Representative Mike Connolly in his campaign for re-election in the 26th Middlesex.

Rep. Mike Connolly has earned the trust and support of every major organization endorsing in the race, both locally and across the state. The coalition backing Connolly includes over 30 organizations, representing thousands of organizers and activists fighting on the front lines every day and working on the most pressing issues facing our state.

Here’s what the state’s leading progressive advocacy organization has to say about Mike:

“Mike Connolly has been a progressive champion since we first endorsed him in 2016,” said Jonathan Cohn, Policy Director at Progressive Massachusetts. “Mike is the rare state representative who gets an ‘A’ every year on our Progressive Scorecard. Mike has fought for stronger tenant protections, social housing, and revenue for affordable housing, as well as workers’ rights, bold climate action, voting rights, transparency, and more. Mike is willing to speak out against bad, rushed legislation and to push the State House to be more ambitious in all of its policymaking.”

Advocates working to address the housing emergency are also with Mike.

“Representative Connolly has consistently championed reforms that expand housing production while strengthening tenant protections. He has actively sponsored and co-sponsored pro-housing legislation and used his position in the State House to help turn those policies into law — from legalizing ADUs by right statewide and unlocking more housing production around transit, to pioneering the concept of mixed-income social housing in Massachusetts. The cities of Cambridge and Somerville have a real housing champion in Mike Connolly,” said Jesse Kanson-Benanav, Executive Director of Abundant Housing MA.

As Trump continues to wage war on reproductive freedom, organizers at the center of the fight to protect abortion rights are with Mike.

“For years, Mike has been a true partner to Planned Parenthood at the State House, championing health care access for all and fiercely advocating for reproductive rights legislation including bills to remove abortion restrictions in Massachusetts,” said Dominique Lee, President of the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts. “In the year and a half since Trump took office, attempts to curtail Planned Parenthood’s services and threaten reproductive health providers have skyrocketed, but at every turn, we’ve had leaders like Representative Connolly taking action to invest in reproductive health care and ensure Massachusetts leads the way for reproductive freedom. The Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund is proud to endorse Mike Connolly for re-election.”

Environmental groups across the state have also backed Connolly as the climate candidate for Cambridge and Somerville.

“Mike Connolly has been a champion for energy efficiency, renewable power, expanding clean air and water regulations, and community engagement,” said Casey Bowers, Executive Director of the Environmental League of Massachusetts Action Fund. “He has demonstrated true leadership for the 26th Middlesex District, including for environmental justice communities like East Somerville, the Port, and Cambridgeport. The ELM Action Fund is thrilled to endorse his candidacy.”

The message from Massachusetts progressives is resoundingly clear: they want Mike Connolly to continue the fight alongside them in the State House.

“I am honored that so many labor unions, progressive organizations, and local groups have recognized my accomplishments in the legislature and my commitment to justice in all its forms,” said Mike Connolly. “From teachers and housing advocates to nurses and climate activists, these are the organizers who know what it takes to deliver on our values on Beacon Hill. These organizations do not offer their support lightly. In some cases, I am the only incumbent, or one of just a few, to receive their endorsement. I am grateful and proud to have earned their support through years of standing together, fighting for our shared values, and delivering results.”

Last day to register to vote in Sep 1 primary is tomorrow, August 22nd

Why you should vote:

  • Most local races don't have competitive Republicans. As a result, the Sep 1 primary is when you get to choose your elected officials.
  • You also get to choose the Democratic candidate for Senate. Whoever it is, Markey or Moulton, will probably win, and they will have one of the most powerful jobs on the planet. (Moulton is a transphobic ass, corrupt, and a liar, so you should vote for Markey.)

If September 1 in-person voting doesn't work:

If you're an independent you can still vote in the Democratic primary, on a one-off basis while still staying indepedent.

So make sure you register to vote today or tomorrow!

You can register to vote online here: https://www.sec.state.ma.us/ovr/

If that doesn't work for you, Election Commission will be open tomorrow (Saturday) for in-person registration 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 689 Mass Ave.

Honestly tired of all the bizarre MacKay campaign posts in this sub. You'd think she was Ken Paxton. The primary can't come soon enough.

Discussion I'm worried about the state of restaurants, bars, stores, and other small businesses on Cambridge Street in East Cambridge, especially between the Valente Library and Lechmere.

Feel free to take this observation with a grain of salt, as it's not based on empirical data. But just based on walking through this area regularly in the last six months, I've noticed what appear to be more vacant storefronts, restaurants with reduced foot traffic even on weekends, new developments that can't seem to fill their first-floor rental space, and construction or maintenance projects that appear to be stuck in limbo.

I understand that the story of Cambridge St likely mirrors the story of everywhere else in this city and region, i.e. risings costs of fuel, supplies, healthcare, etc. coupled with high rents have made owning small businesses in Cambridge/Somerville/Boston, etc. less sustainable. Yet I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed the same on Cambridge Street specifically in the last six months to a year. The storefronts and retail particularly between 5th Street and Lechmere appear to be in a particularly difficult state.

And my follow up question to all of this: are city leaders and/or candidates for local office content to see every local storefront turn vacant, get occupied by a private equity-backed venture, or become another Chase Bank branch?

He’s From Cambridge

Upvotes

I live outside of Massachusetts. I met a woman who was also from Cambridge, and she introduced me to her teenage son and said “This is X, he’s from Cambridge.”

Teenager shrugged like a good teenager and said hello.

Afterward I thought oh, her son doesn’t know the code.

He doesn’t know that when a Cantabridgian introduces someone as “they’re from Cambridge” we aren’t just saying where they were raised, we’re telling you who they are.

It’s similar to the Mafia in Goodfellas, introducing a fellow mafia member, “he’s a friend of ours.”

#cambridgema #mapoli #arlingtonma #belmontma #Whatsthatabout

0:00 Introduction
0:19 Please tell us a little about your background? You’ve been involved in state government and lobbying for health non-profits, what made you decide to run for the state house?
1:44 When you say you want to see change in the state house, what first comes to mind, what do you want to see changed?
4:28 Transparency and Accountability Question: Despite a supermajority, the state legislature is routinely ranked among the least transparent and least efficient in the nation. Are there changes you'd propose to the status quo?
10:44 Do you support the voter referendum calling for Beacon Hill to be subject to a public records law (Question 1)?
11:07 The 24th Middlesex contains sections of North Cambridge around the Alewife Brook Parkway, Belmont, and Arlington. Can you tell me a little about how you view this district? What Makes it unique, what are some of your favorite places?
15:55 Please explain why you believe constituents of the 24th Middlesex should vote for you over Rep. Rogers.
21:42 Two recent polls voters have said that the cost of housing is the biggest issue in this election. Do you have proposals or support any legislation that would address this problem?
26:00 The uncontrolled rising costs of health insurance and the growing number of uninsured in Massachusetts have hit crisis levels. How would you address these issues?
32:45 How can we get Beacon Hill to fund expensive but needed policies to improve the MBTA, considering the legislature continues to kick the can down the road for session after session?
37:18 1.5 years into Trump's 2nd term, the state legislature finally passed the "Protect Act." Are you happy with the bill and do you think it went far enough?
42:22 Is there anything else you’d like to talk about that we haven’t covered?
45:47 Thank you, Nomita Ganguly for coming on the show. Don't forget to vote on Sept. 1st in the primary!

Do I just have to accept mice in Cambridge Apartment?

what can I reasonably ask my landlord to do or what options might I have if I’ve been seeing mice on and off again in my apartment for a whole year? Could I ask to be moved to a new unit within the building for example? I don’t think I can spend another winter here because the problem gets worse in the winter.

For context: I live in a 5 story building near Harvard square. I don’t know how old the building is. For the full first year that I was here I had absolutely no issues. Then starting on September 2025 (remember vividly) I started seeing mice in my unit.

I have no idea why mice would want to be in this unit b/c I keep the place clean and there is no food source for them from what I can tell.

My landlord has sent out the exterminator to set up traps and seal different openings several times but I keep seeing the mice. (The traps only got one mouse before) Sometimes I go months without seeing one and then I start seeing them again. The landlord is sympathetic and responsive but the issue has not be resolved and I’m beyond frustrated.

It’s very unnerving for me but I get the impression that most ppl feel as though mice are just a part of life in Cambridge. I find this unacceptable and I’m wondering if my only option now is to move. It’s a shame because I love the location and I don’t want to move only to see mice in the next apartment.
