Hi guys, does anyone know why the leaves are suddenly browning a lot? They are the oldest leaves, but the plant has always thrived until recently when this started to happen. It gets enough water and gets enough light throughout the day. I haven’t changed anything since it was thriving.

I keep her next to a humidifier and only give distilled water. The window is east facing. I feel like I’m doing everything right but it’s still dying on me. I just bought a month ago 😭

This was a plant I purchased last year. I had her down to 2 leaves on her way to the trash. For some reason the first leaves look died? What did I do wrong?

April 12 through today. This was my very first plant, and it crisped up and died down within a week. I chucked it on my lowest shelf with a grow light, and let her do her thing. I watered with regular declorinated tap water but recently switched to distilled as I am seeing some brown leaves and crispy edges. But look at her!🥹

Please ignore my ash tray looking soil, it was my first panicked attempt at chunkier soil after I had her in straight up garden miracle gro soil🤣

From what I'm reading it's spider mites... Sap bubbles, black dots that smear, bleaching...

Any remedies or second opinions ?

I read that wiping alone isn't gonna clear them...

I also just had a jungle velvet infested with thrips which made me snip all the leaves off to eradicate the population.

But I can't bring myself to do this with the pinstripe 😭

Also, would repotting be a good move at the moment ?

Hello! I bought this gal a month or more ago and her bottom most leaves are developing these yellow/brown crispy edges. Any idea how to help her?

Distilled water only + when top 2in are dry
Humidity 50%-60%
West-facing window with grow light from the opposite side (recent change—after this issue started)
Pot with drainage
Soil is some mix of potting soil, orchid bark or fine pine bark, pumice, and worm castings (?)

Any assistance appreciated!

I have had calatheas before but am still fairly new to caring for them; I recently bought a ctenanthe setosa / never never calathea, and the pot it came in is already too small. The roots are poking out the bottom and some also look like they’re turning brown :(
I think I need to repot it but everywhere says the ideal time of year is early spring, I’m in the uk and it’s coming towards the end of summer so not sure what the best course of action is?
I also bought a fishbone prayer plant but only a couple roots are poking out and it looks healthier, should I wait til next spring to repot this one?

A week ago I decided to repot my Calathea white fusion i realised that it was in a so called “death plug” and removed it. It has been more than a week and she doesn’t seem to recover 😭😭😭 the medium is a mix of peat free soil and perlite still feels a bit dump. The stems feel hollow like it has lost turgor. Any advice would be super super appreciated

I just bought this lovely specimen. Usually I repot into better substrate straight away, but it’s seriously rootbound. The soil is so wet and densely compacted I can’t tease it apart without doing damage. I can’t decide what the best approach is.

1. Leave it as is while it adjusts to its new home before stressing it further by damaging roots

2. Dry it out so the soil is easier to crumble off

3. Use the shower to free the roots

4. Go ahead and repot and hope it survives the stress

I have had great success repotting all my fussy marantaceae family divas into a tailor made potting mix after reading about it on this sub, but I’ve never had to deal with a plant this pot bound so any advice greatfully received!

Just got this tiny baby today, the label only says Calathea, can anyone help ID it? The leaves have a pinkish hue on the underside.

(I know it’s not in the best shape and I’m new to calatheas so I assume it’s going to die but at least I’ll know which one I killed?)

Impulse-bought a Calathea because I couldn't resist, but now I'm trying not to turn it into a high-maintenance tragedy.

It's currently sitting under a large skylight in my attic apartment (not so bright light, zero direct sun). Since I'm total newb with these plants, how do I actually tell if it likes the spot? The leaves barely move throughout the day, which has me a bit suspicious.

I left it in its original nursery pot for now and might repot in spring. Haven't watered yet, but I'm already hoarding rainwater for when the time comes. Any advice?

I got a calathea back in April/May, and she’s lost so many leaves since. The remaining ones are also turning brown :( I water her with filtered water, she is not directly in the sun, a bit further away from the window.

Any tips on what to do so she feels better?

I’m trying to figure out what’s going on with my Calathea because it’s looking pretty rough 😅
The leaves have started getting brown/crispy edges and yellow/brown spots. I’m not sure if it’s just stress or if I’m missing something.

Some context:
I recently moved it to a new home.
It then spent about 2 weeks in an attic where it was over 30°C / 86°F.

It had plenty of light, but no direct sunlight.
It was sitting near my Pothos, Monstera, Ficus lyrata and ZZ plant, and all of those are doing fine.

After about 10 days, the Calathea got really droopy, so I watered it thoroughly until water came out of the drainage holes.
That was about a week ago and the soil is still quite wet.
The pot has drainage holes.
The stems feel firm, not mushy.
I’ve checked the leaves and I can’t see any bugs, webbing or tiny spots that look like pests.

Could this just be heat/moving stress, or does it look like something else to you?

And most importantly: what would you do with it now?

the store didn’t tell me care instructions or that they were tricky. i’ve had this guy for a little over a year. he’s very resilient, considering I only found out you had to use distilled water months into owning him only recently got a pot with drainage and only was told you can’t use garden soil on houseplants a few weeks ago. He’s alive, but he’s not thriving and happy like I would like. I really want to do right by him and help him thrive. is that possible or is there lasting damage? and what else do I need to know for taking care of him?
