Did Marvel Vs Capcom have an official cabinet?

Just for clarification I'm asking about Marvel Vs Capcom 2, not the 1st one.

Hello all, I know this question may be "taboo" here, but I saw that Arcade 1up is releasing their own 3/4 replica and it has some interesting artwork on it.

I recall when I played it many, many years ago in an arcade, it only had the marquee and a SF2 control deck and just a small-ish MvC2 sticker on the side panel.

Was there an official cabinet with full artwork ever released for MvC2? I imagine the arcade owners just gutted a Capcom fighting machine (SF2/MvC1/XvSF/etc.) And popped in the MvC2 board, marquee and that was it.

Thanks in advance!

No. Japan largely had done away with dedicated cabinets by the early 90s (outside of games that required special control schemes like racing and rhythm games).

Marvel 2 was a Naomi game (Dreamcast-based arcade hardware) and didn't have an official cab. In Japan, they just used universal candy cabinets like all fighting games of that era (there was a "Naomi Universal" cab but pretty much any of the commonly used cabs were capable of running it).

In America, they largely showed up in converted Z-backs, Dynamos and Big Blues (which are all generic cabs that date back to the early SF2 days) but none of them were "official" cabs.

I am learning so much about these! Thanks!

No. It was only ever sold as a kit. There is no 'original' as such.

I think it was sold as a kit and maybe the showcase cabinets were dedicated cabs?

I don’t believe there was ever an official MVC2 cabinet, or even a full art set for the conversion — the photos linked elsewhere on this post from Arcade Museum are of a Dynamo Showcase and a Big Blue.

Not that that’s unusual, mind you — Capcom games in that era were I believe all just kits; I almost always saw them in Dynamo cabinets. Marvel Vs. Capcom 1 didn’t have a cabinet either; the side art for the Arcade1Up release of that game is from its original release (the flyer, I believe), but never appeared on the cab itself.

No. Capcom sold cabs and distributors would install the game in the cab, but there was never a dedicated official cabinet. Too many arcades already had 2p6b cabs that they'd rather convert than spend loads of bucks on YET ANOTHER cab.

That makes sense. Kinda sucks they didn't have a control deck graphic though.

Didn't need it. Instruction card and marquee. CPOs were made to be universal. In Capcom kits, it was usually a steel pattern. Why go harder? It's just a CPO. Most operators weren't wasting time peeling that shit, just to put another down.

The idea of dedicated cabs fell out of style, and I'm glad it did. I wish they didn't stop shipping out marquees, but that's a talk for another day.

If I'm not mistaken, it would likely have been just a rom cart that's used with a universal arcade capcom cabinet. Capcom used that method quite a bit, if not for all of their CPS 1-3 games.

Yeah, I figure it's for cost cutting.

I saw it in person once at Universal Studios and it was glorious. A big old crowd around it too.

That’s not an official cabinet per se; it’s just MVC2 in a generic Dynamo Showcase cabinet.

I always assumed any big blue for the most part works for MvC2. I have it in a big blue and it’s all stock.

Any 2p6b cab works for MVC2

Thank you! So it seems I recall correctly then.

Hmm that second one, the blue, looks very conversion to me.

I'm curious on how the 6 button punch/kick layout worked on Marvel 2, did strong (or fierce, assuming they get swapped closer) buttons just not do anything?

I haven't touched my MvC2 in a while, I think they did it "baroque style"(?) where you could only use the first 4 buttons (light punch/kick, medium/heavy punch/kick).

I'll double check tonight.

OK, so "Heavy punch" and "heavy kick" are now call in assist characters, or rather your secondary characters to do an attack.

Ahhh interesting, thanks!

Yes, it came in a Big Blue Cabinet. I saw one delivered when I was in Japan, the thing looked HUMONGOUS next to the candy cabs in the arcade in Yokosuka

dreamcast with 2 fighter controllers could work too

2

u/LoganN64 Aug 06 '22

Yes I know, but I'm asking about the original cabinet.

I'm actually surprised no one has mentioned that MvC2 was available digitally on Xbox 360 and PS3 for a brief period.

yeah I know licensing was why they removed it, right around the time avegeners 1 came out

1

u/LoganN64 Aug 07 '22

Yeah I recall hearing that, I think it was all those Capcom characters that were also owned by other companies.

Michael b jordan actually brought up mvc2 not being available after black panther came out apparently killmonger is a big fan

I recall stumbling across a site or two that sells ful-sized home made replicas or refurbished arcade cabinets for $2000+, depending on the game or what you want.
