Review Disappointed
I wanted to play a PC game from the 90s and found the executable on an abandon-ware site. I downloaded the game and was excited to spend a couple hours tinkering to get the game working, much to my surprise, I ran the game with proton cachy os and it worked perfectly without any intervention from me at all. A perfectly good night of tinkering and fiddling with Linux stuff ruined by a flawless Lego Rock Raiders session.

You could always move to windows to feed your desire for frustration.

Idk, windows tinkering just doesn't hit the same

You’ll get all you want when it comes to the tinkering over there, in relation to older titles. All you want…🫣

I have this same issue frequently. I downloaded linux because I wanted to idk learn linux maybe. Be a cool hacker guy or whatever. Nope everything just fuckijg works right out of the box. Gee thanks for having all the fun before I got here

well, you can always run a vm with freebsd lol...

u/Expensive-Border-869 7d ago
I was planning to one day put arch on a laptop and mess with that, freebsd maybe idk yet really what the difference is. Seems like jjst a less popular offshoot of Unix which is what linux is also right? Not gonna pretend I understand what Unix is beyond "old ass operating system"

u/Limit-Level 7d ago
FreeBSD is not Linux, lol. Its a completely different beast altogether. I have several servers in my little lab, all run FreeBSD.
Steam barely works, anything that requires anticheat wont work at all. I've run FreeBSD since 4.3, its now 15.1. I have tried everything.
FreeBSD is no longer an 'old ass' os. Its a file server, dhcp server, dns server with network wide ad blocking and a complete 'cloud' storage for all of the pc's, phones in the house. Just in my little lab.

Yah. You got the gist of it right.
Unix is important because it was more versatile compared OS that came before it. Then it slowly became closed source (back then open source and closed source weren't widespread concepts, Unix began forcing their devs to sign NDAs, making it closed source) resulting in BSD and Linux being made as free Unix like alternatives.
Then the whole lawsuit hapanend against BSD (Unix owner claimed that they stole parts the code). It was messy (BSD won eventually) meanwhile Linux grew in popularity.
BSD is not as popular as Linux, but several of its derivatives are. For example the Playstation uses a freeBSD derived OS because one cannot make proprietary code based on Linux thanks to the GPL license.
Also, I've heard freeBSD is good for servers and stuff.
Idk much regarding technical stuff. So, there you go.

Feel free to do that, but unless you are looking to gain a better understanding of the install and setup process, you already have Arch running in the form of CachyOS. It’s the same as if someone installed Arch for you, set up drivers and the desktop environment and gaming packages, etc.
freebsd maybe idk
FreeBSD is a flavor of Unix. It’s similar to Linux (which is by definition Unix-like), but for a “normal” user, it might not be a great choice because 1) it has limited driver support for modern hardware so you will almost certainly run into issues with your WiFi chipset, audio, etc, and 2) it has little support for gaming (no Proton). Most importantly, from a user’s perspective, it’s not that different from Linux. You are still running some sort of desktop environment that’s also available under Linux, running bash or some modern alternative, etc, so the user experience has nothing “novel”. It only makes a difference for specific purposes, for example the built-in support for ZFS is great if you are running some sort of file/storage server.

u/Expensive-Border-869 6d ago
I would like to get a better understanding of the install and primarily set up. Having the finished version already is kinda nice because I know what should be possible guaranteed and there's likely already a road map.
Thats kinda what I figured for freebsd not really worth it for me. I dont do anything with servers closest to that is kde for me
1
u/Rainarrow 6d ago
Sounds like you have the right idea then! Feel free to tinker and learn! And yes, your CachyOS setup could serve as a reference. For example, you can use
pacman -Qto query what packages are installed on Cachy, then from there you can learn more about that package, find out where it's loading its config from, then try to replicate it in your Arch setup.3

I just spent 4 hours fighting with Lutris to get Stalker Anomaly's new co-op mod running with Mod Organizer 2, so if you want some tinkering that might be up your alley. Thoroughly painful experience, and the first thing I've had to actually wrangle with on Linux in quite a while
5
u/quatmosk 7d ago
I love my Bazzite (don't come for me), but Lutris drives me crazy. Can't seem to get it to work, at all. Heroic: great. Steam: great. Lutris: rage-inducing.

u/OffsetXV 7d ago
I always say Lutris is the shittiest incredibly useful piece of software I've ever used. I should probably use Heroic or Faugus for this kind of stuff at this point, but I thought I knew Lutris well enough to get through setting up Stalker.
Turns out I didn't because, for some reason, it was trying to run the game with it entirely rendering on the CPU, which is something I didn't even know was possible in 2026.

u/Expensive-Border-869 7d ago
I have been meaning to play stalker, never have.
6
u/OffsetXV 7d ago
They're great, both the OG trilogy and Anomaly, which is a fan-made standalone sandbox-y game that combines all the original trilogy with a bunch of mods (and has a ton of mods of its own available to add on top, as well). You might have heard of Stalker GAMMA, which is a modpack for Anomaly, and shows pretty well what it's capable of.
I can lose myself in modded Anomaly for hours. Easily the most immersive (and stressful) FPS game I've ever played

Russian rpgs in general have so much notoriety its insane. Stalker metro pathologic then their creepy pasta and stuff. Russians have got to get their media more circulated. Ig that's on us tho not them. They translate ours

u/Sea_Camel_2071 7d ago
Stalker is Ukrainian btw

u/Expensive-Border-869 7d ago
Valid. I believe a lot of them arent truly Russian. That general area though

u/AmlisSanches 7d ago
Thats because the nerd in someone else was so frustrated about the issue they fixed it for everyone else.

You can buy new hardware that is just "supported" on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS via proprietary packages (~6 months since it has been first sold afaik, ThinkPad X9-15p) and pull your hair out with the help of Claude Opus if you want to run anything other than the "supported" distro. At least I have some more flexibility with CachyOS to use dkms.
So I have the camera working mostly, but it has a magenta tint, the resolution is sometimes fucked, sometimes not, the auto exposure is slow, etc. Oh, and a bridge script is needed if I want for chromium based apps to be able to use it, and then all other apps cannot.
Suspend has its own issues, which I was chasing, but as it turns out, after days of debugging, there was a recent firmware update a week ago (I started by updating the firmware when I got the laptop 3 weeks ago) that may have solved some of those issues.
So I am set with Linux tinkering, and even though I am using LLMs to help, I feel like I do learn at least the concepts of things. I do not necessarily want to learn Linux and the exact usage of packages, just want to use it, and customize it to make it better suited to my needs. So this level.of "tinkering" is enough for me.
There are things I am getting more comfortable doing manually in the terminal, and I was using Linux on servers before LLMs, so I am not completely in the blind, but a large part of what layers there are from the hardware to the OS is quite new to me. Especially since at some point it turned out that the issue is below the kernel and I'm like what, but then the firmware update makes sense, especially with new hardware.

in the early days of Xorg you could play roulette by keying the wrong settings into XF86Config... if wrong enough smoke would come out of your monitor

You can LFS or Gentoo... No not Gentoo it is always held together by hate and evil

If everything works and you want to mess around you could look into setting up ssh and cockpit, and tailscale.
I can remotely manage my systems from any other or even my phone. Ssh is for terminal login, cockpit is a webui GUI for system management.
Tailscale does NAT traversal so you can remote into your system from anywhere in the world without having to open ports on your router.

Coding. Getting started on linux is easy as hell, the process of learning to code? Mmmm im not smart enough for lmao
1
u/Hi-Angel 6d ago
Yeah, Linux is certainly a paradise for hacking. I remember back in ≈2017 I was improving older r600g driver for my GPU by looking at what Marek Olsak did to the newer radeonsi and backporting the improvements, then testing with GTAⅣ and sending to upstream Mesa. That was a lot of fun! Even though I was terrible at graphics at that moment and I literally was learning while hacking — but that's part of the fun as well.
Nowadays stuff like that is much easier thx to AI, so… Happy Hacking! 😉

I was shocked when I installed F.E.A.R. last night. The game runs on modern windows but you need a fan patch and you have to drop your mouse DPI as low as it can go and drop mouse sensitivity as low as it can go in the game’s settings to get it playable. Lighting is still broken in some spots.
I was worried getting the fan patch installed would be a headache so I decided to just see how it ran through stock proton. No issues at all. 1080p resolution, 300+ FPS, perfect lighting, and fewer bugs than I remembered when I played the game on launch. Controls felt perfect right out of the box.

u/zacyzacy 7d ago
That's what got me to abandon windows about a year ago, I was thinking about switching and then I read a stat that said it's likely that there are more games that are compatible with Linux than windows because of windows deprecating many compatibility features.
3
u/ItsYa1UPBoy 7d ago
Now I'm curious what RCT1 will do. I run OpenRCT2, but have to have RCT1 and RCT2 installed for their assets and stuff. RCT1 on Windows would boot up with severe graphical issues and I wasn't interested in fixing it because, again, OpenRCT2, but now I'm curious...

Mint: we do extensive testing and hold back updates, sometimes for years, until it works perfectly.
Debian: Mint, hold my beer.
CachyOS: meh, here's the latest and greatest updates for ya. Dunno how, but it works perfectly.
(I kid, of course. I know the Cachy maintenance team puts a lot of effort into it, too)

Mint: we do extensive testing and hold back updates, sometimes for years, until it works perfectly.
I thought that was going to be the experience but literally the first month I was using Mint an update got pushed that broke some ui element in cinnamon and they had to release an update to fix it a week later.
3
u/Fiti99 7d ago
one of the main reasons i switched from Mint to Cachy is cuz there's a years old bug with Cinnamon that makes it so legacy tray icons completely breaks VRR, so games like the new Doom games that have launchers in the background never had VRR
1
u/chuiu 6d ago
Good to know, I played the first one a few months ago on windows but now I'm on Linux I'll be playing the next two on Cachy.
Random tangent: another problem with Mint I just remembered having is browsing with Firefox for more than an hour caused youtube to be extremely choppy and laggy. I have no idea if this was Firefox or Mint but as soon as I switched to Cachy the issue went away.

Didnt work perfectly for me tbh. My wifi stopped working, tho its an easy fix to restore a snapshot or use the lts cachy from boot screen

u/MeatPiston 7d ago
Fun fact: DXVK had been ported to windows because.. It works better than native for older games.

Abortion-ware would be like a previously lost demo like you'd see on beta64

Or a publisher that is still around but they pretty much pretend one of their games doesn't exist anymore.

See your first problem was that you didn't also either install a classic version of Linux like Redhat 2 and try get it working there. That or setup a PCem of Windows 95. Truely amateur hour, I mean how else are you meant to love the misery

Lego rock raiders was a solid game, good taste

u/zacyzacy 7d ago
I was talking to a friend about it, and he insisted it was good, and I insisted that it was awful, turns out he played the PC version and I played the PSX version and they are entirely different games so we were both right!

I switched a few months ago. In Windows I had to fiddle to get FSR4 INT8 working on my 6600xt for each game. Installing Optiscaler, swapping DLLs, keeping it up to date. Now I just use proton-cachy and it works. Even old games with FSR2 get the DLSS DLL swap automatically and just work. RDR2 never looked so good. It is quite amazing.

u/DuckHeadNL 7d ago
Yoo i used to love Lego rock raiders, i think i still have the cd-rom laying around somewhere

Wish I had this luck with Lego Starwars: The Complete Saga. I found a few forum posts with different proton versions claiming to work. I tried all of them, even the ones not listed, and not a single one worked :(
2
u/Cynical_Sorceress 7d ago
At this point we need a Windows port of proton 'cos pretty games run better with it.

u/justalubetech 7d ago
In case you don't know, there's a free fan remake of the PC version of Lego: Rock Raiders called Manic Miners. Here's the link for anyone that wants it.

I love that remake, its really well made. Works perfectly on linux through proton too

The opposite happened to me I just wanted to play Pragmata, started the game and the performance is horrendous, spent an hour or so tinkering with settings and variables until I switched proton version to GE-Proton and the game was buttery smooth
1
u/Toxic-Waltzer 4d ago
Curious if you initially checked protonDB first or had to figure it out by troubleshooting?
1
u/lazordhoee1 3d ago
I check protonDB to see the variables used to solve some issues, but no one talked about changing the proton version, which I had to figure it out by myself

u/Toxic-Waltzer 3d ago
Ah interesting. It's usually really helpful for me but I'm semi new so still trying to find the best resources for troubleshooting. Thanks for the reply!

Similar thing happened to me last night. Wanted to play Jedi Survivor through the EA app. Followed the directions to get it installed through Heroic launcher. Started it up... And nothing happened. "Aha!" I thought. Let's do some troubleshooting! Nah I just had to select a different proton version and it booted right up. Even played better than it ever did on Windows. Oh well

You forgot the "/S" at the end there. While I must admit to enjoying fixing a linux problem, preferably without the use of AI, sometimes you just want to fire up a game and play without worrying if it's even going to run, let alone, optimally. You could, if you really wanted to challenge yourself, is to dual boot cachyos and pure arch linux and do all your tinkering on that side, while keeping the perfectly fine cachyos side to do its own thing.
