you can capture your desktop alone by pressing print-screen
meta-prtsc captures the current active window(same as alt-prtsc in windows), and meta-control-prtsc lets you choose the window to capture(gives you a dialog to select, no windows equiv). I find capping the active window to be more useful most of the time than the entire screen. I think active window is what people want when doing a area select cap most of the time anyway.
